Top Adventure Experiences in Himachal
Paragliding at Bir Billing
Bir Billing is the paragliding capital of India and the reason most first-time flyers come to Himachal. The launch is at Billing (about 2,400 m) and you land 14 km away at Bir (about 1,400 m), so a standard tandem gives you close to 1,000 m of vertical and 15 to 30 minutes in the air with a certified pilot. It hosted the Paragliding World Cup in 2015, and no experience is needed for tandem flights. Fly October to November for the clearest air, or March to June; the site closes in the July to August monsoon. Read our guide to paragliding in Himachal for pilot and season detail.
River Rafting on the Beas
The Beas near Kullu is the state's main rafting river. The popular run is the Pirdi to Jhiri stretch, roughly 7 to 14 km of Grade II to III water that pushes towards Grade IV at peak snowmelt, so it suits beginners and confident first-timers alike. Guides, helmets and life jackets are provided, and non-swimmers can raft with the operator's clearance. Water is highest and fastest from April to June, with a calmer second window in September and October after the monsoon settles. More on rivers and grades in our river rafting in Himachal guide.
Trekking: Triund, Hampta Pass and Kheerganga
Himachal has a trek for every fitness level. Triund above McLeod Ganj is the classic starter, about 9 km one way to a 2,875 m ridge with a full view of the Dhauladhar, and it can be done as a long day hike or an overnight camp. Kheerganga in the Parvati Valley climbs from Barshaini to hot springs at around 2,960 m. For something harder, the Hampta Pass (4,270 m) crosses from the green Kullu side into the bare Lahaul desert over four to five days, and Bhrigu Lake and Beas Kund are strong high-altitude options. High treks run mid-June to September once the snow clears. For dedicated, guided departures see our Himachal trekking packages or the trekking in Himachal guide.
Skiing at Solang Valley and Narkanda
Solang Valley, about 13 km from Manali at 2,560 m, is where most people take their first ski or snowboard lesson, and Narkanda near Shimla is the quieter alternative. Beginner slopes come with an instructor and rented gear, so you can start from scratch. The reliable snow window is late December to February, stretching into early March in a good year. Outside the ski season Solang runs zip-lines, ATV rides and a ropeway, which makes it a year-round adventure base.
Camping, Zip-lining and the Spiti Circuit
Beyond the headline sports, Kasol, Solang and Dharamshala are set up for riverside camping with bonfire nights and meals, usually Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 a night. Thrill-seekers add zip-lining and rock climbing around Solang and Manali. The most serious trip is the Spiti circuit, a high-altitude cold desert of monasteries and passes above 4,000 m that is best cycled or motorbiked from June to September, when the Kunzum Pass road is open.
Best Time for Adventure in Himachal
Himachal works for adventure almost all year, but the right month depends entirely on the activity. Skip the July to August monsoon for anything on water or at altitude.
• Spring and early summer (Mar to Jun): the widest window. Rafting is at its strongest, paragliding is open, and lower treks like Triund and Kheerganga are ideal before the heat.
• Monsoon (Jul to Aug): avoid rafting, paragliding and high treks. Landslide risk rises; use this time for lower valley stays only.
• Autumn (Sep to Nov): clear skies and the best paragliding conditions at Bir Billing, plus a calm second rafting window and dry trekking.
• Winter (late Dec to Feb): skiing season at Solang and Narkanda. High passes and most treks are closed.
For a full month-by-month temperature and access breakdown across the state, see the Himachal travel guide.

Want guided treks with fixed departures instead of a private trip? Those live on our Himachal trekking packages page. For adventure ideas and routes around Manali specifically, our adventure sports in Manali guide is the deepest read.
How to Choose the Right Adventure Package
• By activity: come for paragliding, base at Bir Billing; for rafting, base at Kullu on the Beas; for snow, base at Manali for Solang. Multi-activity trips combine two or three around Manali.
• By difficulty: go for a guided Himachal trekking package over a private car trip, since fixed departures come with a certified guide and permits.
• By duration: a 3N/4D break covers one activity and one base; 5N/6D lets you pair two (say rafting plus paragliding); a Spiti circuit needs 6N/7D or more.
• By season: match the month to the sport (see the season table above), and check the Himachal travel guide for access windows before you lock dates.
What to Pack for Adventure in Himachal
Pack for altitude and sudden weather swings even in summer. Keep it to the essentials that Himachal specifically demands:
• Layers you can add and shed fast: a warm fleece and a windproof shell, even in June at altitude.
• Broken-in trekking shoes with grip, plus warm gloves and a woollen cap for early starts and ski days.
• Sunscreen, sunglasses and a power bank; mountain sun is strong and network coverage is patchy on treks and in Spiti.
• A small day pack, a reusable water bottle, and any personal medication; carry ID for permits at high-altitude checkposts.
Why Book Your Himachal Adventure with TravelTriangle
Adventure travel is only as good as the people running it, which is why we work with a verified local agent network rather than a call centre. Travellers deal only with the top 10 percent of reviewed agents, selected after a 23-step assessment, and payment is released to the agent only after your booking vouchers reach you. Every itinerary is fully customisable, you get 24x7 on-trip assistance from local teams, and the 4.2 out of 5 rating on this page comes from 6,701 real, verified travellers.
Our Himachal adventure desk also checks the ground details that catch people out. As the desk puts it, book the Bir Billing morning slot in autumn for the smoothest air, and keep a buffer day in Spiti because passes can close at short notice. Activity operators on our packages use certified guides and provide safety gear for rafting, trekking and skiing.

FAQs About Himachal Adventure Tour Packages
How much does a Himachal adventure tour package cost?
Himachal adventure packages start from around Rs 5,000 per person for a short break and rise with the number of activities, the season and your hotel category. A mixed rafting-and-paragliding trip typically runs Rs 12,000 and up, while a Spiti adventure circuit is higher. Individual activity fees, such as a Bir Billing tandem flight, are separate and confirmed at booking.
Which is the best adventure activity in Himachal for first-timers?
Tandem paragliding at Bir Billing and beginner skiing at Solang Valley are the two easiest, because a certified pilot or instructor is with you the whole time and no experience is needed. Grade II to III rafting on the Beas and the Triund trek are the next step up and still suit fit beginners.
Is river rafting on the Beas safe for non-swimmers?
Yes, non-swimmers can raft the Beas on the beginner Grade II to III stretches with the operator's clearance. You wear a life jacket and helmet, a trained guide is in every raft, and a safety briefing is given before you launch. The higher grades at peak snowmelt are better left to confident rafters.
Where and when can I go skiing in Himachal?
Solang Valley near Manali and Narkanda near Shimla are the main ski bases. The reliable snow window is late December to February, sometimes into early March. Beginner slopes come with an instructor and rented gear, so you can learn from scratch on a short package.
Do I need any gear or equipment, or is it provided?
For paragliding, rafting and skiing, the operator provides the technical gear and safety equipment, including harness, life jacket, helmet and skis. For trekking you bring your own trekking shoes and warm layers, while tents, cooking and guiding are part of a guided trek package. Confirm the exact gear list with your agent when you book.
What is the best time for an adventure trip to Himachal?
March to June and September to November suit most activities, with autumn giving the clearest paragliding at Bir Billing and a calm second rafting window. Late December to February is the ski season. Avoid the July to August monsoon for rafting, paragliding and high-altitude treks.
How many days do I need for a Himachal adventure trip?
Three to four nights are enough for a single activity at one base, such as a paragliding break at Bir Billing. Five to six nights let you combine two activities around Manali, and a Spiti or multi-trek circuit needs six to seven nights or more to acclimatise and cover the distance.
Is travel insurance necessary for adventure activities?
Travel insurance that covers adventure sports and high-altitude travel is strongly recommended, especially for trekking, skiing and Spiti trips. It should cover medical evacuation and trip interruption. Your TravelTriangle agent can advise on cover suited to the activities in your itinerary.
Are these Himachal adventure packages customisable?
Yes. Every package is fully customisable. You can change the base towns, swap or add activities, adjust the number of days, choose your hotel category and set the departure city. A verified local agent builds the final itinerary around your plan and budget.
How fit do I need to be for adventure activities in Himachal?
You do not need to be an athlete for tandem paragliding, beginner skiing or a Beas rafting run, but you should be in sound general health. High-altitude treks like Hampta Pass and Bhrigu Lake, and the Spiti circuit, are physically demanding and need basic stamina and a little preparation before you go.
