History of Port Blair

The history of Port Blair takes you back to 1789 when a captain named Archibald Blair from the East India Company established a penal colony in the southeastern Bay of Andaman. He named it in honor of his commander, Admiral Sir William Cornwallis as Port Cornwallis. In 1858, Port Blair was established as the first ever European settlement on the islands.
