About Ross Island in Andaman
Ross Island is a part of the Andaman archipelago under the South Andaman district. Named after its surveyor Sir Daniel Ross, the island is 1.25 kilometers in length and 0.5 km in width. Dotted with palm and coconut trees, Ross Island in Andaman was the capital of the archipelago during the British Raj era from 1858 to 1941. Today it lies deserted and retains a few structures displaying its colonial glory.
History of Ross Island
The British left the island after an earthquake and build a new settlement at Port Blair. Due to the lack of human activity on the island, banyan trees covered the buildings. The Indian Navy has rebuilt some old buildings like a bakery and a few local stores from where visitors can buy souvenirs. Visitors can also enjoy a Ross Island Memorial documentary which is shown inside the Bakery. The timings are from 9.30 am to 9.45 am and 11.30 am to 11.45 am.
It now lies deserted and the few examples of its colonial glory like the Presbyterian Church and residential quarters are worth checking out. Most of these structures are overtaken now by wild Ficus plants. Spotted Deer and peacocks roam freely on the island.
