About Ross Island in Andaman

Ross Island is a part of the Andaman archipelago under the South Andaman district.

Named after its surveyor Sir Daniel Ross, the island is 1.25 kilometers in length and 0.5 km in width. Dotted with palm and coconut trees, Ross Island in Andaman was the capital of the archipelago during the British Raj era from 1858 to 1941. Today it lies deserted and retains a few structures displaying its colonial glory.

History of Ross Island

The British left the island after an earthquake and build a new settlement at Port Blair. Due to the lack of human activity on the island, banyan trees covered the buildings. The Indian Navy has rebuilt some old buildings like a bakery and a few local stores from where visitors can buy souvenirs. Visitors can also enjoy a Ross Island Memorial documentary which is shown inside the Bakery. The timings are from 9.30 am to 9.45 am and 11.30 am to 11.45 am.

It now lies deserted and the few examples of its colonial glory like the Presbyterian Church and residential quarters are worth checking out. Most of these structures are overtaken now by wild Ficus plants. Spotted Deer and peacocks roam freely on the island.

What Travelers Say About Our Andaman Trips

Nanditha's 6 days trip to Andaman

Overall, our experience with Umang Travels was very good. The hospitality and arrangements were excellent, and special thanks to Mr. Mohit for being extremely kind, approachable, and always reachable throughout the trip. However, there were two major issues that we would like to highlight: Hotel De Pebbles, Port Blair – We strongly recommend that you do not book this hotel for future customers. The entire property is poorly maintained, and both the owner and staff displayed unprofessional and unpleasant behaviour. In contrast, Kings Hotel, Ocean Pearl, and Pearl Park were excellent in terms of service, cleanliness, and staff behaviour. Driver Behaviour – We faced issues with one of the drivers in Neil island who started speaking singular to elderly people for being 5 minutes late to his pick up also who had serious anger and attitude problems. Such behaviour towards customers is unacceptable and needs to be addressed to ensure a better travel experience in the future. Despite these incidents, we appreciate the efforts of the Umang Travels team and Mr. Mohit for making most parts of our trip memorable.

Ruje's 8 days trip to Andaman

It was an awesome experience during the trip. It was nicely planned and the travel agency took prompt action in case of some issues. The hotels provided were quite good except in Havelock which even lacked the basic needs like provision of water and cleaning the rooms. All the rooms there were so badly maintained. The drivers were so courteous and they also doubled up as tour guide in some places. I would like to thank the travel agency for making this a memorable trip. Radhanagar Beach was the best.

Roshinicshetty's 6 days trip to Andaman

Overall our Andaman experience was great. The agency was able to manage everything well. Due to bad weather conditions our water activities got cancelled in Havelock but we were very particular about scuba diving, so the agency took special efforts to arrange it in Neil island for us. Premila personally met us and ensured we had a comfortable stay. Their manager Mr Liton was calm and humble to solve issues which we faced during our stay in Andamans. The drivers were polite and punctual. It was a wonderful trip.

It was a very good experience and the coordinators from travel agent very really good in planning as well as providing services. They took good care of us and there was not even a place where we felt the service was bad which is a very good thing. Thumbs up to them (Raji and Anil) from andaman sai.

Deepak's 7 days trip to Andaman

Cabs and drivers can be improved. Driver is someone who can help the travellers to show more if there is time. But we missed few places due to driver who is not interested to take us though there is sufficient time. Last 2 days in Portblair was pathetic due to the driver.

Dinesh's 6 days trip to Andaman

I recently had the pleasure of planning my Andaman trip with Pearl Andaman, and the entire experience exceeded my expectations. From the very first interaction, the process was smooth, transparent, and well-coordinated. Every detail of the trip was thoughtfully arranged, ensuring that our travel was comfortable, convenient, and completely hassle-free. A special word of appreciation goes to our coordinator, Premila, whose professionalism and dedication truly stood out. She was extremely approachable, patient, and proactive in handling all our queries, right from itinerary planning to last-minute clarifications during the trip. Her guidance made us feel well taken care of throughout the journey. The itinerary was perfectly balanced — it covered all the must-visit attractions in the Andaman Islands while also giving us ample time to relax and enjoy the natural beauty at our own pace. Thanks to Pearl Andaman and Premila’s excellent coordination, we could fully immerse ourselves in the charm of the islands without worrying about logistics. From hotel bookings, ferry arrangements, sightseeing, and on-ground support, everything was seamless. This trip has given us beautiful memories to cherish, and I would wholeheartedly recommend Pearl Andaman and especially Premila to anyone looking to plan a stress-free, well-organized, and memorable vacation in the Andamans.
