About Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne

Melbourne Cricket Ground is the Mecca of Australian cricket and a very important stadium in the world of the game of cricket.

MCG or lovingly called The G by Victorian residents is the home of Melbourne Cricket Club since its inception. Established in 1853, only two decades after the founding of Melbourne city, this ground has witnessed some of the greatest cricket matches in history. Every year, the famous Boxing Day test from 26th November takes place here. But it has also hosted a bunch of other sporting events. The 1956 Olympics, 2006 Commonwealth, and regular soccer, rugby, and football matches are among Melbourne Cricket Ground events.

History:

The centuries-old history of MCG cricket ground cannot be explained in short words. It is the largest stadium in terms of capacity, seating more than 1 lac people. But it is more than that. MCG is the birthplace of both Test Cricket in 1859 and ODI matches in 1971; both played between England and Australia. Over the years, the ground has hosted royal and papal visits and had been the home of US forces during World War II.

Attractions:

On Melbourne Cricket Ground Tour, you will be shown around the player’s dressing rooms, the famous MCG Long Room, MCG tapestry, cricketer’s viewing room, the Ponsford Stand, and the Ron Case Media Centre – the press box. The tour includes a visit to the Library founded together with the ground, the National Sports Museum of Australia, the Cricket Victoria Bill Lawry Centre, a walk in the arena and a view of the city’s skyline from the Terrace. Do not miss the iconic portraits of Sir Don Bradman and Sachin Tendulkar.
