About Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney
The Taronga Zoo is a major zoo of Australia which was founded originally by The Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales in 1884 at Billy goat swamp in Moore Park which was later shifted to the present location as an open range zoo in 1916 on 69 acres of land granted by the New South Wales government. The zoo is divided into eight geographical regions and is home to over 4,000 animals belonging to 350 species. The animals in Taronga Zoo Sydney live in wide open spaces, unlike other zoos where animals are caged. Taronga Park Zoo is located just 8.8 km from Sydney, and it is usually crowded with families on the weekends and on every holiday.
The significance of Taronga Zoo:
Taronga Zoo Sydney Australia is one of the few large open zoos in the world and the first one in Australia. The inspiration for this came to the former secretary of the zoo, Albert Sherbourne Le Souef during his trip to the Hamburg Zoo. He later established the open zoo on the land granted to them by the New South Wales government. The zoo was officially opened in 1916 and has since undergone significant developments. The Taronga Zoo Cable Car is one of the significant attractions of the zoo. You can explore parts of the zoo on the cable car, and the Taronga Zoo Sky Safari is a great way to explore the animals of the park in their natural self from a safe distance. The zoo has won several awards including the NSW tourism awards for their outstanding service. The Rustic Bridge has continued to be an attraction in the park since 1915 and one of the park’s earliest landscape features. The zoo has been in works to expand their wildlife with the creation of the Wild Asia and Marine sections which opened in 2006 and 2008. The zoo has been in news recently due to the first elephant birth in a zoo in Australia and for the breeding of Platypus in the zoo. There is also a Zoo Friends Initiative in the park which gives its members unrestricted access in the park and a peek into the internal functioning of the park. The members of the Zoo Friends Initiative can also volunteer their services to the park. These initiatives were put into effect to increase the interest of youth in animal conservation by the zoo.
