Bentota is the easy first beach, about two hours south of Colombo airport, with calm water and the Madu River mangroves next door. Keep driving south and Unawatuna, Weligama and Mirissa line up within an hour of each other, so a single south-coast base covers surf lessons, stilt fishermen at Koggala and the Mirissa whale boats. Tangalle is the quiet luxury end of the south. On the other coast, Trincomalee pairs flat, shallow swimming at Nilaveli with snorkelling off Pigeon Island, and Arugam Bay is the surf headline from May to September. Kalpitiya in the northwest is the place for kitesurfing and dolphin pods.

Beyond swimming, the coast is where most of the trip's activities sit. A good beach package leaves room for two or three of these.

Surfing is the big one and it suits every level. Weligama's beach break is where most first-timers stand up, while Arugam Bay on the east coast draws confident surfers from May to September. Whale and dolphin watching runs out of Mirissa from November to April, with a strong chance of blue whales, and Kalpitiya has large spinner-dolphin pods in season. A common loop lands in Colombo, heads inland to Sigiriya and Kandy for two or three days, then drops to the south coast for the beach half of the trip. How to choose the right beach package

By purpose. Couples lean to the quiet south (Tangalle, Mirissa) or a honeymoon package; families want calm, shallow water at Bentota and Nilaveli; groups and friends go for Unawatuna and Arugam Bay.

By budget. Guesthouse-led trips keep costs down, mid-range buys beach resorts in Bentota and Beruwala, and the premium band is the Tangalle and Trincomalee boutique end.

By duration. Five or six nights is enough for one coast. Eight or nine lets you pair a coast with Sigiriya and Kandy, or run both coasts if your dates straddle the seasons.

The coast is hot and humid most of the year, so pack light cottons, swimwear and a rash guard if you plan to surf.
