Reis Magos Fort in Goa

Take in the Splendorous Beauty of the Reis Magos Fort

About Reis Magos Fort in Goa

Listed under the Goa Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, the Reis Magos Fort in Goa is the oldest fort in the state.

That’s right, it is even older than Fort Aguada. The fort is located on the banks of Mandovi River, in the Reis Magos village of Bardez. Reis Magos can roughly be translated from Portuguese to mean the Three Wise Men, from the Bible. Although the Reis Magos fort had fallen to ruins in the yesteryears, it has now been restored for serving as a Cultural and Heritage Centre and has become a must-visit for those going off the beaten track.

As far as the Reis Magos fort history is concerned, the fort was constructed in the year 1493, and served as an armed outpost for King Adil Shah. Back then, it was only a small structure, but when the Portuguese took over in 1541, they constructed the entire fort and a small church as well, later referred to as the Reis Magos church. The Reis Magos fort architecture is reminiscent of the Portuguese style of construction, seeing that a majority of the construction was carried out after the Portuguese arrived in Goa.

Right before the 1900s, it was used as a jail, and was later abandoned a couple of years later. With its restoration, an immediate requirement, the Helen Hamlyn Trust paid for the restoration, in collaboration with the Government of Goa and INTACH. After all of the restoration was completed, the fort was opened to the general public in mid-2012. Hope this quenches your thirst for Reis Magos fort information, something that is elusive and hard to find.

Puja's 6 days trip to Goa

We would like to thank Jack from Wanderglobe for making the trip so memorable. It was our reunion where we friends met after 12 yrs but now along with husbands and for me along with my son as well. The resorts were very good both according to ambience and hygiene. Drivers were mostly on time and stopped at good places for food and shopping.Baby food was available in both the resorts in the buffet breakfast as well as in the main menu. The cruise was enjoyable. Thank you once again for planning the trip so well and guiding us.

Soumya's 5 days trip to Goa

Travel agent and cab driver were awesome in support and coordinate. As of hotel, i just have 3 problems due to which i give it 3: 1. The pool of the resort is closed. So couldn’t enjoy the pool when on stay. (Agent has informed it earlier, but still it’s a deduction in our amenities) 2. Within the hotel we don’t have any options for entertainment/indoor sports. So when it rains heavily, we didn’t have more choice other than our own company. 3. We faced minor issues in the room. But the staff were quick to resolve the same.

These two forts are roughly 9 kms away from each other. You can either hail a taxi or an auto to take you there, or drive yourself.

Although the slope that takes you up to the fort is pretty easily walkable, there are also battery operated vehicles that will take you there. Ask about the vehicles when purchasing your tickets.
