Best Time To Visit Manali

Plan your trip during best season to experience the best of this stunning destination

The best time to visit Manali is March to June for open roads and comfortable sightseeing, or December to February if you want snowfall. Monsoon, July to September, is the quiet, low-price window with a landslide risk to plan around. That one-line answer covers most trips. The rest of this guide is for pinning down the exact month: what the weather actually does, when the crowds and prices spike, when Rohtang Pass opens, and which weeks are worth avoiding.

Best Time to Visit Manali at a Glance

Four seasons, four different trips. Pick the row that matches what you want out of Manali.

Season Months Temp (town) Weather Best for
Spring & Summer Mar to Jun 8C to 25C Cool, clear, roads open Sightseeing, families, first-timers
Monsoon Jul to Sep 15C to 24C Rain, lush green, landslide risk Budget trips, quiet, nature
Autumn Oct to Nov 2C to 19C Crisp, clear, thinning crowds Value, photography, couples
Winter Dec to Feb -1C to 10C Cold, snowfall Snow, honeymoon, adventure

Temperatures are Manali-town averages (around 2,050 m). Solang Valley, Rohtang and the Atal Tunnel side run several degrees colder and hold snow well after the town has thawed.

Manali Month by Month: Weather, Snowfall, Crowds and Price

No competitor combines temperature, snow, crowd and price in one view. This is the table to plan against. Highs and lows are town averages in Celsius; the snow column refers to reliable snow in and around town.

Month High Low Snowfall Crowd Price Verdict
January 8C -1C Heavy, most reliable Moderate (after New Year rush) High to 2 Jan, then drops Best month for snow
February 10C 1C Frequent Moderate Moderate Snow without New Year prices
March 15C 4C Occasional early month Rising Moderate Spring, fewer crowds
April 20C 7C None in town Rising Rising Blossoms, easy sightseeing
May 23C 11C None (Rohtang reopens mid-month) Very high (school holidays) Peak Great weather, but crowded
June 25C 14C None Very high Peak Rohtang open, busiest weeks
July 24C 15C None (rain begins) Low Low, discounts appear Budget and green, watch roads
August 23C 15C None (wettest month) Low Lowest Cheapest, monsoon risk highest
September 22C 12C None Low to moderate Low Underrated value, skies clear
October 19C 6C Late-month dusting up high Moderate Moderate Clear autumn, best all-round value
November 15C 2C First snow at higher points Low to moderate Moderate Crisp, quiet, early snow
December 10C -1C Builds through the month High from Christmas week Spikes 24 Dec to 2 Jan Festive snow, book early

Best Time to Visit Manali by Traveller Type

Manali suits a family in May and a honeymoon couple in January for opposite reasons. Match the trip to the traveller.

Traveller Best months Why
Families Mar to Jun Stable weather, open roads, medical and transport on hand, easy sightseeing for kids
Honeymoon couples Dec to Feb, or Oct to Nov Snow and cosy stays in winter; crowd-free calm and clear skies in autumn
Budget travellers Jul to Sep Off-season discounts and the fewest crowds; September gives value without peak rain
Adventure and snow Dec to Jan for ski and snow; May to Jun for paragliding, rafting, treks Each activity has its own season
Senior citizens Apr to May, Sep to Oct Mild, stable weather and clear roads; slow-paced days are easy
Solo travellers Mar to Jun for company; Oct to Nov for quiet Social peak or calm shoulder, both safe with local support

Couples chasing snow should read our Manali honeymoon guide for stay ideas, then plan the timing from the winter and autumn rows above.

Snowfall in Manali: The Best Months for Snow

Snow is the single biggest reason people search for the right time to come, and it is not on the ground year-round. December to February is the snow window, and January is the peak: temperatures drop below freezing, and fresh snow settles across town, the higher viewpoints and the slopes. If you want thick, photo-ready white cover, January is the safest bet.

For snow activities, Solang Valley is the base for skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing, with instructors and gear on site. When Rohtang Pass is shut for winter, the Atal Tunnel keeps snow within reach: it stays open year-round and takes you through to Sissu in the Lahaul valley, which reliably holds snow. One honest caveat travellers report: fresh snowfall can close roads or slow the drive up for a few hours, which is normal mountain winter, so keep your snow-day flexible rather than packing it against a fixed departure.

Rohtang Pass vs Atal Tunnel: What Is Open When

The most common planning mistake is assuming the snow at Rohtang is always reachable. It is not. Rohtang is seasonal; the Atal Tunnel is the all-weather way in. Here is the difference.

Route Open when Altitude Permit What it reaches
Rohtang Pass Approx 17 May 2026 to mid-Oct/Nov; shut every Tuesday Approx 3,978 m Yes, online permit Classic Rohtang snow point, Marhi, Gulaba
Atal Tunnel Year-round, 24x7 (barring snow-clearance closures) Approx 3,000 m portal No permit Sissu and Lahaul snow when Rohtang is shut

So if you are travelling any time from late autumn to spring and want snow, you are heading through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, not over Rohtang. The 9.02 km tunnel needs no permit and stays open through winter. Rohtang reopens the classic pass for summer visitors from mid-May.

When to Avoid Manali: Worst Weeks and Price Traps

Some windows cost more or deliver less. If you have flexibility, sidestep these.

• Mid-May to late June: peak school-holiday crowds and peak prices. Solang, Mall Road and the Rohtang road all jam, and rooms cost the most they will all year.

• 24 December to 2 January: rooms run 40 to 50 percent higher than the rest of winter, and snow that exact week is not guaranteed. If snow is the goal, early-to-mid January is cheaper and more reliable.

• Mid-July to August: the heaviest rain and the highest landslide and road-block risk on the way up. Great value, but only go if your plans can absorb a lost day.

Best Time to Visit Manali with Kullu or Shimla

Most Manali trips get paired with a neighbour. The timing shifts slightly depending on which.

Manali and Kullu together

April to June is the sweet spot. Both sit close on the same road, the weather is stable and warm enough for comfortable days, and the drive between them stays clear, so you can cover Kullu's river valleys, temples and apple country without rushing. A 4 to 5 day trip covers both at a relaxed pace.

Manali and Shimla together

March to June is best for smooth sightseeing across both, and December to January if you want snow, though Manali holds more of it than Shimla. Because the two are further apart, give the combined trip 6 to 8 days so you are not living on the road. For the Shimla end specifically, our best time to visit Shimla guide has the town-specific detail.

Peak Season in Manali: What to Expect

Manali has two peaks a year, and both are driven by demand rather than weather alone. April to June is the summer-holiday peak, when families escape the plains and the town is at its liveliest and priciest. December to January is the snow peak, pulled up further by Christmas and New Year. In both windows, expect higher hotel and taxi rates, crowded viewpoints, and rooms and vehicles selling out weeks ahead. If you must travel in peak season, book early and lock your snow-point transport before you arrive rather than on the day.

What to Pack by Season

Pack to the season, not the calendar. Summer days are mild but evenings turn cool, so carry a light jacket even in June. For winter, heavy woollens, a waterproof outer layer, gloves, a warm cap and boots with grip are non-negotiable if you are heading to Solang or the Atal Tunnel side. In monsoon, a rain shell, quick-dry clothing and footwear you do not mind getting wet make the difference. Whatever the month, sunscreen and sunglasses matter more than people expect at altitude.

Planning Your Manali Trip

Once you have your month, the rest is logistics. If you would rather have the stays, transport and snow-point timing handled for the season you have picked, our Manali tour packages are fully customisable, and a local expert plans the route around live weather and road conditions. For the wider region, browse the Himachal travel guide, or read up on places to visit in Manali and how to reach Manali before you lock the dates.

Climate in Manali

Summer Season in Manali

This is the busiest and easiest time to be in Manali, and for most first trips it is the answer. While the plains bake past 40C, town days sit around 15C to 25C, so you can walk Mall Road, hike out to the Hadimba Temple through the deodar forest, and ride up to Solang Valley without the cold slowing you down. Roads from Delhi and Chandigarh stay open and dry, which matters if you are driving up with kids or older parents. Two things to know: May and June are school-holiday peak, so book rooms weeks ahead and expect Solang and Mall Road to be genuinely crowded, and Rohtang Pass only reopens around mid-May, so an April trip will not include the classic Rohtang snow point.

Monsoon Season in Manali

Manali in monsoon is the trade-off season. Hotel rates fall, often sharply, and the valley turns deep green, so if you want quiet and value it delivers. The catch is real: heavy rain can trigger landslides and short road blocks on the Kiratpur to Manali highway and on the higher stretches, so build slack into the itinerary and keep plans flexible. August is the wettest month and the riskiest for road delays; September eases off, skies start clearing, and it becomes one of the best-value windows of the year. This is the cheapest time to visit Manali, which is why budget travellers and long-stay remote workers favour it.

Winter Season in Manali

Autumn (October to November) is a quieter shoulder-season window, with clear air, fewer crowds, moderate prices, and beautiful photography conditions. Winter (December to February) is why many people visit Manali, as snow builds from December and January brings the most reliable snowfall around town, with Solang Valley becoming the hub for skiing, snowboarding and snow tubing. Be prepared for occasional road closures after heavy snow, limited access to higher points, and higher prices during the Christmas-to-New-Year week, when snowfall is not guaranteed. Book stays and snow-point transport in advance and keep a day of buffer.

    Manali Travel FAQs

What is the best time to visit Manali?

March to June is the best time for sightseeing, with pleasant days around 15C to 25C and open roads. December to February is best for snowfall. July to September is the cheapest and quietest, with a monsoon landslide risk to plan around. Choose by what you want: comfort and clear roads, snow, or low prices.

Which month gets the most snowfall in Manali?

January. It is the coldest month, temperatures drop below freezing, and fresh snow settles across town, the higher viewpoints and the slopes. For thick, reliable snow cover, early-to-mid January beats the pricier Christmas-New Year week.

What is the coldest month in Manali?

January is the coldest, with town lows around -1C and daytime highs near 8C. Higher points such as Solang, Rohtang and the Atal Tunnel side run several degrees colder, so pack heavy woollens and a waterproof layer if you are going up to the snow.

When does Rohtang Pass open, and can I visit in winter?

Rohtang Pass reopened for tourists around 17 May 2026 and stays open until it closes for winter between mid-October and mid-November; it is also shut every Tuesday. In winter it is closed, but the Atal Tunnel runs year-round with no permit and takes you to snow at Sissu instead.

Can I see snow in Manali in May or November?

Not reliably in town. By May the town has thawed and Rohtang has only just reopened, so snow means driving up to Rohtang or through the Atal Tunnel to Sissu. In November the first snow starts dusting the higher points, but for snow on the ground in town, December to February is the dependable window.

Which is the cheapest month to visit Manali?

July and August, the peak of monsoon, see the steepest hotel discounts and the fewest crowds, followed by September. The trade-off is heavy rain and a real landslide risk on the roads up, so go only if your itinerary can absorb a delayed day.

Is Manali safe to visit during the monsoon?

Yes, with planning. The main risk is landslides and short road blocks on the highway up during heavy rain, especially in August. Keep the itinerary flexible, avoid night driving on the ghat sections, and check road status before travel days. The town itself stays safe and calm.

What should I pack for Manali in winter?

Heavy woollens, a windproof and waterproof outer layer, thermal innerwear, gloves, a warm cap, thick socks and boots with grip for snow. Add sunscreen and sunglasses; snow glare at altitude is strong. If you are heading to Solang or the Atal Tunnel side, waterproof footwear is essential.

When is peak season in Manali?

There are two: April to June, the summer-holiday peak, and December to January, the snow-and-festive peak. Both bring higher prices, crowded viewpoints and early sell-outs, so book hotels and vehicles weeks ahead if you travel in these windows.

Do I need a permit to visit Manali or Rohtang Pass?

Manali town needs no permit. Rohtang Pass requires an online permit, and it is capped daily, so arrange it in advance. The Atal Tunnel to Sissu needs no permit and is the easier all-weather route to snow when Rohtang is closed or fully booked.

When is the Manali Winter Carnival?

The Manali Winter Carnival is held in mid-January, with cultural performances, local food and snow events along Mall Road. It lands in the best snow window of the year, so pair it with a January trip and book stays early, as the town fills up.

How many days do I need for Manali, and with Kullu or Shimla?

Manali on its own suits 3 to 4 days. Add Kullu and plan 4 to 5 days, since the two sit close on the same road. Combine Manali with Shimla and give it 6 to 8 days, as the two are further apart and you do not want to spend the trip on the road.
