About Devarayanadurga in Bangalore

Devarayanadurga is a hill town situated amidst picturesque locality near Tumkur at a distance of 72 km from Bangalore.

Devarayanadurga Hills is home to the temples of Yoga Narasimha & Bhoga Narasimha. The Bhoga Narasimha temple is located at the foothills while the Yoga Narasimha shrine is located at the top of the hill. These Devarayanadurga temples are among the popular tourist places near Bangalore. Another famous temple in the area is the Mahalakshmi Temple at Goravanahalli.

When translated, Devarayanadurga means Fort of the God. It got the name Devarayanadurga after the Mysore ruler Chikka Devaraja Wodeyar captured it on one of his victorious feats. This is a great weekend pilgrimage spot and a getaway for a quick retreat or picnic, to escape from the grind of the daily hustle and bustle of city life.

Devarayanadurga Trek

This hill spot is also a trekker’s paradise, due to the fact that it has numerous hillocks surrounding it. Motorable road is available till the hilltop. Many trekkers go for a Devarayanadurga trek from the Bhoga Narasimha temple at the foothill. Devarayanadurga state forest is declared as a protective reserved forest by the forest department of Government of Karnataka. The trek is really easy and can be enjoyed by families of all age groups. On the Devarayanadurga trek, people can enjoy beautiful greenery and spot plenty of birdlife.

Devarayanadurga, Tumkur is steeped in mythological importance. It is said that Lord Brahma has performed penance for many years in the name of Lord Vishnu. Impressed by his penance, Lord Vishnu has incarnated himself as Lord Narasimha here.

Famous for the natural water spring called Namada Chilume in Devarayanadurga is considered as the source of Jayamangali River. There are two other springs known as Ramatirtha and Dhanushtirtha. There is a large cave nearby with figures of Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana. The car festival of Sri Bhoga Narasimha Swamy is held during the month of March/April here.
