About Ganga Talao in Mauritius

Ganga Talao, also known as Grand Bassin, is a sacred crater lake and highly revered Hindu pilgrimage destination in Mauritius.

Thanks to the Indian immigration in millions done by the British during the colonial period, there is a large population of Hindus in the island country. The first pilgrims to make their journey to Grand Bassin, Mauritius was led by Pandit Giri Gossayne from the Triolet village in 1898.

Tucked in a secluded location between mountains in the Savanne district, Ganga Talao, Mauritius stands as the representative of Holy Ganges for those who are away from their homeland. While his stay as an indentured laborer, Pandit Sanjibanlal took a liking to the Grand Bassin Lake, Mauritius and he later came back as a merchant to establish this place as a Hindu pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Shiva. The divine beauty of the lake only added to the spiritual appeal of the place.

Here stands the Shiva statue of Mauritius, 108 ft tall with his trident and Ganges flowing out of his tresses. Unveiled in 2007, this is the tallest statue of Mauritius. There is a similar statue of his eternal consort, Durga Mata as well, but not as tall. The Sagar Shiv Mandir with the lingam is the main shrine here. During the nights of Maha Shivratri, the Grand Bassin Temple of Mauritius gets a huge crowd of devotees who cover the journey between their home and the temple walking barefoot to offer puja to Lord Shiva.

We had an amazing trip to Mauritius, all thanks to Gurmeet! From start to finish, everything was perfectly planned and hassle-free. She took care of all the details— accommodation & activities—and made sure we had the best experience possible. Her thoughtful recommendations as per our plan truly made a difference. Naveen's 5 days trip to Mauritius

Overall a great trip, except for the following: Pickup cab was missing, there was no one with the placard at the airport. One driver even made me load the luggage and then asked me to unload it as he didn't have enough seats. No drinking water bottle provided anywhere - during meals at hotel, transfer cabs and during the tours. Most tours end at 4-5pm and dinner starts at 7pm only, it's important for the hotel to provide some fruits / snacks at the room for full board booking.

Aman's 6 days trip to Mauritius

Everything was mostly good. The only improvement could be to include more city time in port lois. We lot very less time to explore the main city market and do shopping. Also we got very limited time at Waterfront in port lois. We hoped to see sunset there but travel agent wanted to wrap by 4pm and leave early.
