Day-wise Itinerary: Hanoi and an Overnight Ha Long Bay Cruise

Day 1 Hanoi: Arrival, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter

Arrive in Hanoi, Vietnam! Your flight from Ahmedabad lands at Noi Bai International Airport before sunrise, and our representative waits outside arrivals with a name board. The drive to the Old Quarter takes about 45 minutes on empty early-morning roads. Standard hotel check-in is at 2 pm, so leave your bags at the desk, freshen up and take the morning slowly; ask for early check-in in your quote if you want the room straight away.

In the afternoon, walk five minutes to Hoan Kiem Lake and cross the red The Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple, which sits on a small island in the lake. As the light goes, wander the Old Quarter, where each lane was once named after the trade it sold: silk on Hang Gai, tin on Hang Thiec, paper votives on Hang Ma. Day 2 Hanoi: City Tour, Mausoleum, Temple of Literature and Museum of Ethnology

After breakfast, set off with your English-speaking guide for the Ho Chi Minh complex, a short drive from the hotel. Visit Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, Ba Dinh Square, the Presidential Palace grounds, Uncle Ho's stilt house, the One Pillar Pagoda, first built in 1049, and the Ho Chi Minh Museum. The Mausoleum opens only in the morning and closes on Mondays and Fridays and for a few weeks of maintenance each year; if your Day 2 falls on one of those days, the guide covers Ba Dinh Square and the palace grounds and swaps in Tran Quoc Pagoda on West Lake.

After lunch, pick between the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, which covers the country's 54 recognised ethnic groups and has full-size village houses in its garden, and the potters' village of Bat Trang. Later, visit the Temple of Literature (Van Mieu), founded in 1070, and Quoc Tu Giam beside it, where stone turtles carry the names of the scholars who passed the royal exams. In the evening you can add a water puppet show near Hoan Kiem Lake, which runs under an hour. Get back to your Hanoi hotel for an overnight stay.

Day 3 Ha Long Bay: Board Your Overnight Cruise

After breakfast, leave the big suitcase at the hotel desk (you are back on Night 4) and head for Ha Long Bay. Pick-up is around 8:00 am, and the expressway gets you to Tuan Chau Tourist Wharf in about 2 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours, with a tea stop on the way. A welcome drink is served as you board.

Check in to your private cabin and have lunch on board as the boat threads between limestone islands. Visit Ti Top Island, where about 400 steps lead to a viewpoint over the bay, or stay on the small beach to swim and sunbathe. Later, arrive in Pearl Farm Village to see how oysters are seeded, and paddle a kayak or take a bamboo boat through the nearby lagoon. Back on board, the crew runs a short class on rolling fresh spring rolls. Tea is served on the sundeck as the sun drops behind the karsts, then dinner (a vegetarian menu is served if you asked at booking) and the night on board.

Day 4 Ha Long Bay: Surprise Cave, Then Back to Hanoi for a Free Evening

After a light breakfast and coffee, take the tender to Sung Sot, or Surprise Cave, one of the largest caves in the bay, where a path climbs through three huge chambers of stalactites. Check out of your cabin and cruise back to the Tourist Wharf over brunch, disembarking around noon.

The coach brings you back to Hanoi by mid-afternoon. Check in to your Hanoi hotel, then spend the evening as you like. If Day 4 falls on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake close to traffic and the Old Quarter night market runs along Hang Dao. Overnight in Hanoi.

Day 5 Hanoi: Free Morning and Flight Home to Ahmedabad

The morning is free. The Vietnam Airlines flight home leaves at 5:35 pm, so there is time for last shopping: silk scarves on Hang Gai, Vietnamese coffee beans and a phin filter, or a quick round of Dong Xuan Market. A single-entry e-visa costs US$25, can be valid for up to 90 days and takes about 3 working days, so apply a week or more before your flight.
