For most travellers the cruise is the reason to go. Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with roughly 1,600 limestone islands and islets, and since 2023 the listing also covers the Cat Ba archipelago next door. You can only see the inner bay properly from a boat.

Is There a Ship from India to Vietnam?

There is no scheduled passenger ship from India to Vietnam, from Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or anywhere else. Searches for an "India to Vietnam ship ticket price" have no real fare behind them. You have two realistic ways to combine Vietnam with a cruise.

Fly, then cruise. This is what almost every Indian traveller does. Non-stop flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and a few other cities reach Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City in about 3 to 5.5 hours, depending on the city. From Hanoi you are 2.5 hours from the Ha Long Bay piers. From Ho Chi Minh City the Mekong Delta is about two hours away. Sail in on an ocean cruise. Large cruise lines run Southeast Asia sailings out of Singapore and Hong Kong that call at Vietnamese ports. The usual stops are Ha Long (for Hanoi), Chan May or Da Nang (for Hue and Hoi An), Nha Trang, and Phu My, about two hours from Ho Chi Minh City. You still fly from India to Singapore or Hong Kong first, you get a day in each port rather than a night in Ha Long Bay, and fares change with every sailing. It suits people who love big ships. Types of Vietnam Cruises

Vietnam has five kinds of cruise, and the right one depends on how much time you have and what you want from the water. The prices below are for the boat only, per person, so you can see what the cruise part of a package is worth.

What a 2-Day Ha Long Bay Cruise Looks Like

Most overnight cruises in Ha Long Bay follow a similar rhythm. Times shift a little by boat, but this is the day you can expect.

Day 1

• 8:00 am. Pickup from your Hanoi hotel in a limousine van for the 2.5-hour drive on the expressway, with one rest stop.

• 12:00 noon. Board at the pier, a short safety briefing, then check in to your cabin while the boat sails out.

• 1:00 pm. Lunch on board as the first karsts slide past.

• 3:00 pm. Sung Sot Cave, the "Surprise Cave", reached by a short, steep stair climb. Its two huge chambers make it one of the largest caves in the bay.

• 4:30 pm. Ti Top Island. Climb to the viewpoint for the postcard view, or swim off the small beach. The island is named after Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who visited with Ho Chi Minh in 1962.

• 5:30 pm. Sunset drinks on the sundeck as the boat anchors for the night.

• 7:00 pm. A Vietnamese cooking demonstration (spring rolls are the usual lesson), then dinner. Squid fishing off the back deck afterwards if you're still awake.

Day 2

• 6:30 am. Tai chi on the sundeck while the bay is still quiet.

• 7:30 am. Kayak or take a bamboo boat through the arch into the Luon Cave lagoon, or visit a floating village.

• 9:30 am. Check out of your cabin, then brunch as the boat cruises back.

• 11:00 am. Disembark and drive back to Hanoi, arriving around 3:00 pm.

How to Choose the Right Vietnam Cruise Package

Four questions settle it for most people.

• How many nights? A day cruise sees Ha Long from the boat. One night adds sunset, kayaking and the morning stillness, and suits most first-timers. Two nights is the only way to reach Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long without rushing.

Food on Board, Transfers and Visa for Indian Travellers

Food. All meals on an overnight cruise are included: lunch, dinner, breakfast and brunch. Drinks beyond the complimentary water, such as soft drinks, beer and wine, are usually charged extra on board. Most 4 and 5-star boats in Ha Long Bay cook vegetarian meals on request, and some keep an Indian menu. Jain meals (no onion, garlic or root vegetables) are possible, but the kitchen needs notice. Transfers. Flights from India land at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi. Your package includes the transfer to your Hanoi hotel and the limousine van to the cruise pier, about 2.5 hours each way on the expressway. Some itineraries go straight from Noi Bai to the pier for an early flight, which saves a night.

Visa. Indian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam. The e-visa is applied for online, is valid for up to 90 days, and allows single or multiple entry. Best Time for a Vietnam Cruise

October to April is the best time for a Ha Long Bay cruise. Seas are calm and storms are rare. March to May gives the clearest views and water warm enough to swim, and May is usually still calm before the storm season starts. December to February is cool, 15 to 20°C, and often misty, which some people love for photographs and others find disappointing. Pack a jacket for the sundeck.

The months to be careful with are June to September, and July to September especially, with the odd late storm in early October. This is typhoon season in northern Vietnam. When a storm warning goes out, the Quang Ninh authorities stop all boats leaving port, sometimes for two or three days. Typhoon Yagi closed the bay in September 2024. You can still cruise in summer and many sailings go ahead, but keep a spare day in your plan.

The Mekong runs on a different calendar. December to April is dry and best for floating markets. August to November brings high water, when the Delta looks its greenest but some small canals flood.

Cruise Safety and Weather on Ha Long Bay

Every licensed boat in Ha Long Bay must carry life jackets for each guest, including child sizes, and the crew gives a safety briefing at boarding. Kayaking is done in life jackets, and children paddle in a double kayak with an adult.

What to Pack for a Ha Long Bay Cruise

Cabins are compact, so a soft bag is easier than a big suitcase. Many boats let you leave the main luggage at your Hanoi hotel.

Leave disposable plastic bottles and bags at home and carry a refillable water bottle. Quang Ninh province bans single-use plastic on Ha Long Bay tourist boats.
