Vietnam 3 Nights 4 Days Itinerary: Hanoi and Overnight Ha Long Bay Cruise

Day 1: Arrival in Hanoi, Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter

You land at Noi Bai International Airport, where an agent's representative meets you outside arrivals. The drive to your hotel in the Hoan Kiem district takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. Check in and get over the early start. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Hoan Kiem Lake is a five-minute walk from the hotel. Cross the red Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple on its little island, then wander into the Old Quarter, where each street was once named after the goods sold on it. In the evening, Ta Hien street fills with plastic stools and glasses of fresh bia hoi, and the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre on the lake's north-east corner runs shows through the evening. Later, return to the hotel for a restful sleep.

Day 2: Overnight Ha Long Bay Cruise, Lan Ha Bay and Kayaking

Have breakfast at the hotel and check out. You will be taken to Ha Long Bay today. Declared a World Heritage site in 1994, Ha Long Bay is sprinkled with islands and dotted with wind- and wave-eroded grottoes, and it is the best-known sight in northern Vietnam.

At around 9:00 AM, get transferred in a shuttle bus. When you reach Ha Long City, stop for a tea break. From here, proceed to the cruise at 12:00 noon (approx.). On boarding, you will be welcomed with refreshing drinks. Attend a short safety briefing, followed by your cabin check-in. Relax as you sail on the calm water while the cruise heads into the bay.

As emerald water and thousands of limestone islands topped by rainforest surround you, the cruise crosses Da Chong Islet. Here, catch sight of a lighthouse that is more than a century old and was built by the French. Lunch is served at 1:00 PM (approx.): a platter of fresh seafood and Vietnamese dishes, with a vegetarian menu if you asked for one at booking. Meanwhile, you cross the islets of Con Vit and Gia Luan. At 4:00 PM (approx.), you pass through Lan Ha Bay and enter the Cua Van area, laced by limestone landscapes.

Next comes Ba Trai Dao beach, where you can go kayaking and/or swimming. At 5:30 PM (approx.), return to the cruise for a sunset party on board. You can also join a cooking class at 6:30 PM (approx.), followed by dinner at 7:00 PM (approx.). After dinner, relax in your cabin or try squid fishing off the deck, watch a movie or sip a drink at the bar. Later, slip into your bed on board, anchored among the islands.

Day 3: Dark and Bright Cave, Then Back to Hanoi

Greet the sunrise with a tai chi session on the sundeck. At around 7:30 AM, you will be served breakfast. Then head out to Dark and Bright Cave and the surrounding islets by local rowing boat at around 8:30 AM. The boatman takes you under a low rock arch into a lagoon closed in on all sides by cliffs, and at that hour you often have it almost to yourself. After a trip of a little over an hour, return to the cruise and complete checkout formalities. Before leaving, you will be served an early lunch at around 11:00 AM. Disembark at noon at the ferry terminal and get transferred to Hanoi by shuttle bus. By around 3:00 PM, you will reach your hotel in Hanoi. The remainder of the day is at your disposal. You can go shopping on Hang Gai street for silk, or sample local delicacies such as bun cha and egg coffee. Later, return to the hotel for a peaceful sleep.

Day 4: Departure from Hanoi

Have breakfast at the hotel. If your flight leaves in the afternoon, there is time for one last stop. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and One Pillar Pagoda sit side by side in Ba Dinh, about 15 minutes away. The mausoleum opens only in the morning, is closed on Mondays and Fridays, and usually shuts for about two months of maintenance from September, so check before you go. Hotel checkout is usually at noon, and you can leave your bags at the front desk. Your transfer to Noi Bai airport is timed so that you reach about three hours before an international departure. Spend your last dong at the airport or change it back before you leave, because few Indian money changers accept it.

Best Time for a Hanoi and Ha Long 3N/4D Trip

October to December and March to April are the best months for this trip. The north of Vietnam has four real seasons, unlike the south, so the month matters more for a Ha Long cruise than for a beach holiday.
