Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow is one of the most iconic artistic structures in Moscow which is also called Pokrovsky Cathedral. It is often said by the locals that the architect of the cathedral was blinded by Ivan to keep its design unique and to avoid replication of the structure. It is also said that earlier the cathedral was painted fully white with gold domes. Later in the 17th century, it was painted with bright colors as seen today. St. Basil’s Cathedral is officially known as the "The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Virgin by the Moat". The Cathedral was built on the orders of Ivan to celebrate the victory of the capture of Kazan in the year 1552. The cathedral took about 8 years to establish and was finally completed in the year 1560.

History of St. Basil’s Cathedral

The cathedral was made white in color to match the Kremlin made of white-stone. The onion shaped dome was gold in color and well-patterned. A hip-roofed bell tower was added to the cathedral structure in the 17th century. Also, many changes were made to the cathedral such as vaulted roofing was done over the gallery area and the staircase. The helmeted domes were renovated and made better by replacing them with decorated domes. While the cathedral was being rebuilt in the year 1860, the design was made more integrated and complex by painting it in a much better way and it has remained the same way henceforth. The cathedral has now become a museum after a spiral staircase was discovered here during the restoration work was on. These spiral stairs lead the visitors to the central church which comprises of a spectacular soaring tented roof and intricate designs. A walk down the narrow gallery gives you the historic feel of the intricate design and exquisite patterns which were used then and have been painted superbly here. On the Day of Intercession in the month of October, one service is held here. The cathedral has been on the fear of disappearing during various phases such as during the invasions by the Napoleons. The cathedral also survived fire and a demolition plan. The cathedral is extremely beautiful with its pretty domes highlighting its stunning rounded shapes and colors. This is surely a must visit place in Moscow.
