Saint Petersburg is the port city in Russia. Also, it has been the imperial capital of Russia for two centuries. Peter and Paul Fortress is an extremely famous citadel situated in Saint Petersburg, Russia. This fortress was discovered and founded by Peter the Great in the year 1703. The fortress has been built according to the designs of Domenico Trezzini. The other architects who were the minds behind the beautiful design of this amazing fortress are David Grimm and Nikolay Lvov. The design and architecture of this fortress are truly wonderful and amazing. The fortress was under construction for several years starting from the year 1706 till the year 1740. During the early 1920s, this fortress was put to use as a prison. Also, the Bolshevik government used this fortress as an execution ground. The Peter and Paul Fortress in St. Petersburg is very famous and well-known since it is the very first structure which was built in Saint Petersburg. When on a trip to Saint Petersburg city in Russia, this is definitely a must visit the place.
Facts About Peter and Paul Fortress
The Neva gate of the Peter and Paul Fortress was built in the neoclassical style by Nikolai Lvov which also served as the main gate for prisoners to come out of the prison.
There is a bell tower in the castle which is 122.5 meters high and is one of the major highlights of the fortress.
The authentic bastions were made of timber and earth which were replaced by stone in the year 1706.
The statue of the Peter the Great inside the Peter and Paul Fortress is said to be in the form of a cruel person hence it has always been into controversy.
