About Winter Palace in St Petersburg

Amidst all the glitz and glamour of urbanization, the best thing that St Petersburg has to offer is still its rich history and heritage.

And right in the middle of it stands the magnificent Winter Palace of Peter the Great and all the Russian Tsars that came after him. Today, it is an inseparable part of St Petersburg’s cultural tour and houses the best collections of the State Hermitage Museum, but Russia’s Winter Palace has had a very different history.

History of the Winter Palace

Situated on the banks of Neva River, Winter Palace of St Petersburg was the residence to the Tsars of Russia from the year 1732 to 1917. But what it originally looked is quite a bit of mystery, since it has been rebuilt and restored multiple times. The Winter Palace of Russia was erected to reflect the might of the Romanovs, who ruled over the country for almost two centuries before the Bolshevik Revolution. But ironically, the storming of the palace by Red Army in 1917 in protest against the regime became a symbol for the revolution itself.

Significance

Although initially all remnants of the imperial regime were being erased, the restoration projects post World War saved the elite rooms and interiors of the Winter Palace. If you visit it now as part of the Hermitage Museum, you can see the grandeur in which the Tsars used to live. Although Alexander II was the last monarch to reside there truly, the rooms would still put your idea of opulence to shame. The Winter Palace museum inside is a combination of magnificent architecture from floor to roof, grand halls, and chambers, collections of European and Asian antiquities and many other paintings and decorative artworks.
