About Winter Palace in St Petersburg

Amidst all the glitz and glamour of urbanization, the best thing that St Petersburg has to offer is still its rich history and heritage. And right in the middle of it stands the magnificent Winter Palace of Peter the Great and all the Russian Tsars that came after him. Today, it is an inseparable part of St Petersburg’s cultural tour and houses the best collections of the State Hermitage Museum, but Russia’s Winter Palace has had a very different history.

History of the Winter Palace

Situated on the banks of Neva River, Winter Palace of St Petersburg was the residence to the Tsars of Russia from the year 1732 to 1917. But what it originally looked is quite a bit of mystery, since it has been rebuilt and restored multiple times. The Winter Palace of Russia was erected to reflect the might of the Romanovs, who ruled over the country for almost two centuries before the Bolshevik Revolution. But ironically, the storming of the palace by Red Army in 1917 in protest against the regime became a symbol for the revolution itself.

Significance

Although initially all remnants of the imperial regime were being erased, the restoration projects post World War saved the elite rooms and interiors of the Winter Palace. If you visit it now as part of the Hermitage Museum, you can see the grandeur in which the Tsars used to live. Although Alexander II was the last monarch to reside there truly, the rooms would still put your idea of opulence to shame. The Winter Palace museum inside is a combination of magnificent architecture from floor to roof, grand halls, and chambers, collections of European and Asian antiquities and many other paintings and decorative artworks.

    • Trip to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is an island country..where the contours of the land itself forms a kind of sinewy poetry. A very special island that travellers, from Sinbad to Marco Polo, dreamed about and with similar aspirations, me and my fiancée decided to visit SL for our honeymoon. We explored different options and stumbled upon Travel Triangle, who seemed well versed with SL, were offering competitive prices. Had a Chat an online agent - Swati and within a day, we received 4 quotes from 4 Vendors. We decided to go forward with 'Direct Link' as the Travel Co-ordinator Anto, was polite/courteous, knowledgable and honest, was able to understand our requirements and provide the best tour schedule i.e 5 days and 4 nights at Colombo/Kandy - Nuwara Eliya - Nuwara Eliya - Bentota - Bentota/Colombo. This ensured that we were able to enjoy various topographies urban/hill station/mountains/beach. Anto co-ordinated end to end right from time we had initial chat to the time we completed the tour. We Had to pay 10% as Booking and the remaining amount was paid just before we boarded our flight to Colombo from Chennai. ( They do give option to pay the remaining amount on arrival in Colombo, however, with network issues, it might be tad difficult, esp in receiving OTPs et all) Mr Hafis was our assigned tour guide as well as transporter. He was a through professional, brilliant knowledge and insights on the tourist places. He was so amazing with providing all the statistics, dates, dimensions, USPs of the places that made us admire and appreciate the places even more than we would have probably done. Also, special mention about his driving skills, we spent so much time on road but not once we experienced any jerk or lack of comfort. All the Hotels were brilliant - Topaz (Kandy) , Galway Heights(Nuwara Eliya) and Pandanus Beach Resort & Spa (Bentota). Staff, Room/View from Room and Food. Word of caution - If you are a VEG like me, it is rather important that you let reception know about it , as and when you check-in the hotel. Direct Link are experts in chalking out the travel schedule in such a way that you enjoy the max number of tourist places in as little time as possible. Of all the travel options provided, we enjoyed the below mentioned the most - Ambevala Farm, Strawberry Farm Batik Factory and Gems Museum Bluefield Tea Estate ( Mohamed the Tea Guide was Brilliant) Ramboda, Devon and St Clair's Falls Gangaramaya Temple Gregory Lake Hanuman Temple and Sita Amman Kovil Kandy Lake, Temple of Tooth Relic and Kandyan Cultural Show, Upper Lake Drive Madu River Safari - CINNAMON ISLAND-BUDDHIST TEMPLE-HINDU TEMPLE - DELTA- FISH FARM Marine Drive Important National Monuments Nuwara Eliya Post Office and Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage ( Break Fast at Villa Pinnewala) Addressing the elephant in the room, the security in SL post the 21st April attacks is pretty heavy and upto the mark. Just be prepared for random checks of the car by the Sri Lankan Army. However, it does not have much impact on your experience. No matter where you go, you are greeted by the happily smiling Sri Lankan, as afterall they do hold the World Record of most plesant and smiling people in the world record i.e ~ 86% of the poulation (Another gem shared by our tour guide - Hafis) We had a great time in Lanka and take this opportunity to THANK Travel Triangle, Swati, Direct Link, Anto and Hafis for making this a beautiful trip that we will cherish forever.

    • Trip to Vietnam

St VIET travels arranged a great trip in Vietnam. The rooms are well equipped and at the center of the city. The pick and drop with the English speaking guide is good but still have lot on offer to improve. Should reduce the time in taking to fabricated shops for making purchases as guides are keeping this as definite trip points. Halong and bana hills are great locations to visit.

    • Trip to Dubai

We booked our Dubai trip with Ask World Vacation. Ms. Shalu Thakur was our rep. The ground team (Mr. Akbar) and Ms. Thakur & team were always available and highly responsive. Always polite and accommodating. Thanks to all their efforts we had a great trip. Here are my views on each aspect: Hotel: (5/5) We stayed at Avenue hotel, Al Rigga St. The room was very clean and sufficient with all amenities required. During our stay, the housekeeping staff cleaned our room regularly and all the bellboys and staff were very cordial. The food at breakfast was delicious with a lot of options. Due to our tightly packed schedule, we couldn't visit the bar, pool and gym facilities but no doubt they would live up to the standard Agent service rating (5/5): Ms Shalu, Mr. Mohit and Mr. Akbar were our points of contact for our trip and all have worked hard to give us a memorable trip. So many calls, so many messages, requests to change itinerary just the previous day, all were taken in stride by the team. And always polite and nice. Cab rating (4/5): All our cab drivers were punctual and cabs were clean. All of them spoke English and Hindi. But one driver we had was not very welcoming (we had him for most of our trip). He was on time all days, no doubt. But tourists would want warmth not just punctuality. Our itinerary looked like this: Day 1: Arrival + Dhow cruise (4/5): Our flight was about 45 mins late but met the driver at exit with no problems. We ate as soon as we arrived after freshening up at the hotel. The hotel thankfully allowed for early check-in. We slept for the noon as we has early morning flight. Dhow cruise is a must, beautiful river cruise with old and new Dubai on both sides. Only downside was the food was quite mediocre with most dishes cold. We had Falcon Oasis as the cruise boat. Tip: Carry jackets as it gets quite cold on the cruise during Dec-Feb Day 2: Ferrari theme park + Abu Dhabi city tour (4/5): Ferrari theme park was a great experience. Don't miss out on Formula Rossa ( fastest roller coaster), flying aces, Fiorana GT challenge, turbo track! We loved all the rides, we opted for Ferrari theme park first (we convinced other tourists in our cab too) and the crowd was less, some rides we took twice too. Only hiccup was the tickets weren't working and we had to wait from the ground team to send again, which they corrected in 15 minutes. Then we proceeded to Abu Dhabi city tour, it would be a shame to call it tour because we were only taken to Sheikh Zayed Mosque, which is beautiful place for pics, and a very distant view of palace hotel and then to dates market. Tip: Research date prices and the quality of dates; also recommended to not have lunch at Ferrari theme park as most of the rides are challenging Day 3: Dubai City tour + Desert Safari (5/5): We had a tour guide for our Dubai city tour, he was very entertaining and showed us a lot of places (although from outside), places where we stopped for - Jumeirah beach, Art gallery, Jumeirah grand mosque. After a brief stop for lunch, we set out for Desert safari, which believe me is one of the best experiences in life! Our driver was an expert at dune bashing and we were really impressed with the ease he drove! We had a stunning view of the sunset after which we proceeded for the camp. The dinner buffet, on the other hand was terrible. The dishes were bland and cold. That did not dampen our camping experience, there were a variety of performances (fire throwing, belly dancing etc). Very entertaining! Tip: Carry a jacket, the desert is not kind in the nights too and some snacks, the buffet sucks Day 4: Aqauventure water park + Lost Chambers Aquarium (5/5): We went to the aquarium is beautiful, with full length displays and different kinds of fish in each. We got some great clicks! Then comes the waterpark, it was amazing. I personally loved Poseidon's revenge, Leap of faith and Zoomerango. There is also a river raft ride which is so peaceful to chill in. As the water park ended at 5:30, we headed to Global village on our own. It is one of a kind, we had a lot of fun going to various country exhibits and their performances and trying foods around the middle world. Tip: Swimwear is required for the waterpark, they won't grant entry otherwise Day 5: Burj Khalifa + Dubai Mall (4/5): We took the morning slot during non-prime hours for Burj Khalifa. It was crowded but we got good view and clicks. We then headed to Dubai Mall which had all the high end outlets. This would also be a good time to buy electronics. We caught the fountain show in the evening and the night view of Burj Khalifa (stunning!) Tip: Research the electronics you want to buy beforehand Day 6: Leisure + Return: We had to check out by 12, but the hotel kept our luggage on request. We roamed around the souks for the rest of the day and headed to airport for our flight It was a great trip, although jam packed we really enjoyed ourselves. Thanks to the team for all the arrangements! All the best! Looking forward to take more trips with you. PS: Book your travel insurance from any of the private insurance companies, Travel Triangle seemed indifferent regarding insurance though we called several times. Same goes for exchange, choose Western Union.

    • Trip to Seychelles

Our agent was Dream Travels and representative for them was Nitika Khetan. Nitika is excellent in her effort and coordination. I asked her the most random questions and followed up incessantly, but she was patient always and very polite. The hotels were excellent. We had a near flawless experience with the transport services, except for the last day. The cab for airport transfer for our return flight did not turn up!! on contacting the travel agent (luxury travels) we came to understand that the cab wasn't sent in all likelihood, but they said that there was an accident. Luckily for us the agency and hotel quickly co-ordinated to arrange for another cab, and we left 40 min after our original departure time. All in all, our Seychelles trip was most memorable. Good experience with Travel Triangle and Dream Travels. Coco de Mer hotel sun deck had the best sunset. We also chartered a cruise to Curieuse island and St. Pierre island (on our own), which was an excellent experience!

    • Trip to Singapore

First, I want to say that DOrganizer is giving very competitive rate compare to other vendors. I would like to thank Preethi for giving a cheap price with comport Air Travel and Hotel. We Stayed in Hotel Parc Soverign, Albert St, Singapore. The location of the hotel is extremely great, but the size of the standard room is very small. A 6 feet tall person, can't sleep on bed, leg will fall out of bed also the bathroom is extremely small, you can't take bath peacefully. Similarly the Breakfast options are very poor. Other than Hotel, everything was great in Singapore. But the overall coordination from DOrganizer's was not upto the mark. I had to follow up every time, I was keep on calling the DOrganizer's Agent Preethi. I got my Passport with VISA just one day before the travel. I got my travel insurance just few hours before my flight (When I got the Travel Insurance Voucher, I was travelling to Airport, couldn't take print out also due to delayed response). They will remind only for payment due, but all the other times we need to follow up with them. Instead of 100% enjoyable trip, they kept me tensed till the last moment. The same point already mentioned by so many customers, DOrganizers should take this seriously, otherwise they may loose their reputation.

    • Trip to Europe

My panoramic tour covered nearly 80% of Alps in 7 days. Starting from Zurich – Luzern – Engelburg – Titlis – Interlaken – Wilderswil – Jungfraujoch – Spieze – Visp – Zermatt - Kleign Matterhorn – Brig – Andermatt – Chur – Thusis - Filisur – Preda - St. Moritz – Poschiavo – Le Prese – Tirano – Landquart – and back to Zurich. Like most of the foreign hotel system, the rooms are centrally administered pre-set air cooling room ducts where you cannot change room temperature or even fan speed though a control switch appears in the room. On a five point score, I rate Ibis Stylus (Luzern) at 3 =[Location, Front Desk, Hospitality]; Hotel Baeren the bear Inn (Wilderswil, Interlaken) at 2 =[[Location, Front Desk]; I suggest not to take dinner at this hotel as they charge 5 CHF/person on the name of starter bread worth 10 dime which one never orders. Better move to Interlaken for it before 16:00 hours and return back by 19:00 hours. (After 19:00, no public transport is available and taxi ride is very costly). Best Western Butterfly (Zermatt) at 4=[Pick-up, Locality, Hospitality, Italian Food with very flexible menu]; Albergo Lardi (Le Prese) at 5=[Locality, Front Desk, Comfort, Hospitality, Food with flexible variety than menu]; Park Inn by Redisson (Zurich) at 3=[Locality, Front Desk, Food]. If you are a country site lover and planning for Bernina Express Tour then – 1. If moving from Chur to Tirano and back- get your camera ready between Filisur to Preda, and Le Prese to Tirano. Come back at Le Prese and stay at Albergo Lardi. 2. If moving from Tirano to Chur- Come to Le Prese and stay at Albergo Lardi. In the morning move back to Tirano and get your camera ready between Tirano to Le Prese and Preda to Filisur. Regio trains from Landquart to Zurich are not clean. I found dirty toilet in it. Being pure vegetarian, I suffered for traditional Indian food a bit but had good quality fruits and tasty breads of excellent combinations with strawberry, jams, butter, chocolate etc. at a reasonable price everywhere in shopping stores like Coop, Volg, Uds etc. I thank Travel Q Shop via Travel Triangle who made proper arrangements and setting the venues and reservations thereof for a totally self-planned and self-customised tour like this.
