About Hanuman Tok in Gangtok
Situated in Gangtok, Hanuman Tok has its interesting meaning. The literal meaning of Tok is ‘temple’. Hanuman Tok (mandir) is devoted to Lord Hanuman. Hanuman Tok in Gangtok is the most renowned temple in Sikkim, managed and maintained by a division of army department of India. The temple is popularly known as a wish fulfilling temple. It was during the year 1968 that the entire area handed over to Indian Army. The garden is full of flowers and is well maintained. Here, the small museum offers some information on the construction of the temple. Presently, it is managed and preserved by the Units of 17 Mountain Division of the Army. Your trip to Sikkim is incomplete with visiting Hanuman Tok.
The place contains too neat and clean premises. It is situated at an altitude of 7200 feet at a distance of about nine kilometers uphill from Gangtok on a blissfully calm and quiet hilltop. According to a legend, Lord Hanuman halted at this place while carrying Sanjeevani Booti from the Himalayas to Lanka for saving the life of Lord Ram’s younger brother Laxman. There is also a small temple of Saibaba near the Hanuman Temple. While here, you can also see several stupas and chortens and just before the entrance to the stairway, the royal cremation grounds called Lukshyama are located, where the mortal remains of the members of the former Namgyal dynasty were confined to the flames.
One of the major attractions in Hanuman Tok is the circular temple unique of its kind in Sikkim. Tourist can enjoy the beautiful view of Gangtok town along with the nearby hills. The temple is open for visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery all around with the crisp chilly air of this site. The most interesting part of Hanuman Tok is the journey. It offers pictorial views of Gangtok and the border in hilly regions. The temple is revered widely for its serene ambience and a viewing area. This place offers incredibly wonderful view of Kanchenjunga range. In fact, if you are looking for the best views of Kanchenjunga, it is from the Hanuman Tok.
The location is completely free from the pollution of city life. The place is serene and makes you feel one with nature. The place is perfect to unwind, meditate and recharge you. It is not often that one gets close to nature. It is not just the richness of nature but also the unspoiled beauty of the place that makes you enjoy its treasures. You have to climb stairs from the parking lot to reach the top. Benches are placed on the way so that you can take in the beauty of the hills midway. Beautiful bells hang from above which make a resonating sound the moment you ring it. You get the best view of Kanchenjunga Mountains from this attraction in Gangtok.
This divine place called Hanuman Tok in Gangtok is great for capturing the surreal views of the landscape along with the views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. One is very likely to feel the spiritual as well as the tranquil vibes here. Hanuman Tok has immense importance in the Hindu religion. Earlier, there used to be a rock here which was worshipped by the devotees for years. Later on, a deity of Hanuman was erected at the same place and hence the place was named as Hanuman Tok. The views of the sunrise and the sunset from this point will leave you speechless. Make sure to carry your camera in order to capture one of the best sunrise and sunset views. The whole area was handed over to the Indian Army in the year 1968 and since then it has been taken care of by them. At the temple, there is also a viewpoint specially constructed from where tourists can capture the amazing views of the surroundings. The round-shaped viewpoint is constructed with tiles and wooden ceiling with benches for the visitors to relax and chill while absorbing the pristine views. January to March is the most preferred time to visit Hanuman Tok in Sikkim in terms of weather and climatic conditions otherwise it can be visited at any time of the year from 05:00 am to 07:00 pm.
