About Beaches Guide in Pattaya
Pattaya was no more than a humble fishing village only less than four decades ago. It shot to fame in around 1980 after the end of Vietnam War and has not looked back since. The main beauty of Pattaya lies in its abundance of waterfront entertainment. Divided into two principal beachfronts, the beaches of Pattaya are the principal attraction in east Thailand’s Gulf city. On one hand, the beaches are lined with bars, pubs, restaurants, shopping malls, luxurious condos and boutique hotels. On the other hand there are exciting watersport adventure opportunities all along the shoreline, drawing tourists in hundreds of thousands every season.
Here are the best beaches in Pattaya, Thailand to explore.
1. Jomtien Beach
Once lush green rice fields, Jomtien Beach is now a bustling waterfront location for a family or a couple’s trip. The sparkling green-blue waterline is a paradise for those who want to enjoy some exciting water sports like windsurfing, jet skiing, diving, kite boarding or the old-school catamaran sailing. The yellow sands, fringed by palms and coconuts stay warm from sunrise to sunset, making it one of the best beaches for sunbathing and relaxation. The best part is Jomtien is located within a walking distance of the busier Pattaya Beach, but is much more laid-back than the latter.
2. Koh Larn or Coral Island
Koh Larn is a pretty as picture offshore island accessed by a 15 minute ferry ride from the mainland, with crystal blue water and pretty landscape set against green hills. Also known as Coral Island for its plethora of underwater activities, Koh Larn Beach is a dreamland for couples and newlyweds. They can indulge in exciting activities like underwater sea walking holding hands, take a glass-bottom boat ride to see the marine world alive beneath them or go for the good old snorkeling and scuba diving trips while in Koh Larn Island.
3. Naklua Beach
The word ‘Naklua’ means ‘salt field’ in local Pattayan language. This beach once used to be the centre of fishing activities in northern Pattaya. It has now evolved into a throbbing hub for clubbing, pubbing, dining, swimming and surfing. But while the urban excitement is very much tangible in the Naklua beach with five star hotels and resorts, it also has the old-world charm in the form of outdoor shacks and the ambience of the old fishing community.
4. Wong Amat Beach
Just like Koh Larn is perfect for couples, Wong Amat Beach is perfect for families. The atmosphere here is just the balance between laidback picnicking, water adventure and beachfront refreshment facilities. One can see a lot of families with kids making sand castles in the beach and grownups relaxing in the sunbathing beds. Wong Amat is perhaps the cleanest, homeliest and thus the best beach in Pattaya.
5. Bong Saen Beach
Bong Saen Beach has a unique appeal among all the other beaches in Pattaya. It specializes in tranquility and exploring local cuisines like mussels, octopus, squid and fishcakes from the beachfront shops. There are vendors for chairs tables and umbrellas to offer makeshift resting places wherever you want. If visited in October, there is an annual Water Buffalo Race that one can witness – scary and very exciting. There is a public park on the beach called Laem Thaen Cape that one can explore as well.
