Guide to Pattaya Beaches
Jomtien Beach In Pattaya
Jomtien Beach is the wide, easygoing stretch of sand about 3 km south of central Pattaya, and the beach most travellers pick when they want the sea without the crush of the Walking Street crowd. Locals call it Chom Thian. The sand runs for roughly 6 km, so there is room to swim, try a water sport or just sit with a plate of...
Coral Island In Pattaya
Also known as Koh Hae, Coral Island near Pattaya is a beautiful island located a few kilometers off the coast of Phuket and Pattaya. It is 3 kilometers and 7 kilometers away from Phuket and Pattaya, respectively. Situated southeast of Phuket, the island is famous for its incredible golden shoreline and beautiful coral reefs...
Pattaya has more beaches than the busy main strip most first-timers picture. The best beaches in Pattaya run from the 4 km curve of Pattaya Beach in the centre, south over Pratumnak Hill to calm Jomtien and hidden Cosy Beach, north to upscale Wong Amat and quiet Naklua, and a short ferry offshore to the clear water and coral of Koh Larn, the island Pattaya locals actually mean when they say Coral Island. This guide covers 12 of them: where each one sits, who it suits, whether you can swim, what water sports cost in Baht and Rupees, and the right season to go. Straight facts, no filler.
Pattaya Beaches: Quick Takeaways
• Pattaya Beach is the central 4 km crescent along Beach Road: best for people-watching, water sports and sunsets, not quiet swims.
• Jomtien, just south over Pratumnak Hill, is the wider, calmer, more family-friendly stretch for a full beach day.
• Wong Amat and Cosy Beach have the cleanest sand and clearest water for swimming; Naklua and Bang Saray are the quiet, local picks.
• Koh Larn (Coral Island) is the island day-trip: Tawaen, Samae and Tien beaches, ~45 min by public ferry from Bali Hai Pier for about 30 Baht.
• Go November to February for calm, clear gulf water; expect short afternoon showers June to October, when prices are lowest.

Best Mainland Beaches in Pattaya
Pattaya Beach
This is the beach the query is really about, the 4 km crescent that curves along Beach Road through the centre of town, from the quieter Dusit end in the north down to Bali Hai Pier and Walking Street in the south. A palm-shaded walkway runs its whole length, and this is where Pattaya's energy concentrates: jet-skis and parasailers offshore, deckchairs and vendors on the sand, bars and malls across the road. It is a social, people-watching beach rather than a pristine swimming one, and the water gets busy with boat traffic near the piers. Come for the buzz, the sunset over the bay, and the easiest access to water sports of any beach in town. For a calm morning swim, head to one of the beaches below instead.
Jomtien Beach
About 3 km south of the centre, over Pratumnak Hill, Jomtien is the wider, more easygoing stretch that most families and returning visitors settle on. Locals call it Chom Thian. The sand runs roughly 6 km, so even on a busy day you can walk to a quieter patch, and the water is calmer and cleaner than the main strip. The northern end has the deckchairs, banana boats and jet-skis; the long southern end is where you go to actually relax. It is also the base for the high-rise condo district, so cafes and cheap seafood are never far. If you want one mainland beach for a full, unhurried day, this is it.
Wong Amat Beach
Tucked into the Naklua headland at the far north of Pattaya, Wong Amat is the choice when you want cleaner sand and clearer, calmer water without leaving the mainland. It is more upscale and residential, lined with resorts rather than bars, which keeps the crowds and the noise down. Swimming is good here, and the gentle north-facing curve gives you a genuine sunset. Couples and families tend to prefer it over the central strip, and it is an easy songthaew ride back into town when you want the nightlife.
Dongtan Beach
Sitting between Pratumnak Hill and the north end of Jomtien, Dong Tan is a shaded, tree-lined beach that trades Pattaya Beach's noise for calm. The pines behind the sand mean you get real shade, which is rare here, and the water is settled enough for an easy swim. It is a long-standing favourite with the local LGBT community and anyone who wants a quieter lounge close to the centre. Deckchairs and a few low-key vendors, and not much else, which is the point.
Cosy Beach
Half hidden below Pratumnak Hill, Cosy Beach is the little cove locals point to when you ask for the cleanest swim near central Pattaya. It is small and can feel tucked away, reached down through a resort access, and the reward is clearer water and softer sand than the main bay. Good for a proper swim and a lazy afternoon. Walk or ride up to the nearby Cosy Beach viewpoint and Pratumnak lookout for the classic bay panorama afterwards.
Naklua Beach
North of Wong Amat, Naklua is the old fishing quarter of Pattaya, and its beach stays quiet and local. This is not a sunbathing showpiece; it is where you come for calm, low-key sand and, more to the point, the Lan Po seafood market and jetty nearby, where the day boats land the catch. Pair a slow morning here with a fresh seafood lunch. It is the antidote to the main strip, and only a few minutes north of it.
Best Island Beaches: Koh Larn (Coral Island)
When Pattaya locals say Coral Island, they mean Koh Larn, a real island about 7 km off the coast, not the similarly-nicknamed island off Phuket. This is where Pattaya keeps its clear, turquoise water and its coral, and it is the day-trip almost everyone adds to a beach holiday. The public ferry from Bali Hai Pier takes about 45 minutes and costs around 30 Baht one way; a speedboat charter does it in roughly 15. The island has half a dozen beaches, each with its own character. Give it a full day.
Tawaen Beach
Tawaen is the main, liveliest beach on Koh Larn and where most ferries and speedboats land. It is a broad arc of pale sand with clear water, lined with loungers, seafood shacks and every water sport going, from parasailing to the underwater sea-walk. It is the busiest strip on the island, so come here for the buzz and the activities, then walk or ride a motorbike-taxi over the ridge to a quieter beach for the afternoon.
Samae Beach
On the island's west side, Samae is the pick for snorkelling and softer sand. The water is clear and calm, there is coral within swimming distance, and the whole beach feels a notch more relaxed than Tawaen even though it also has loungers and food. It faces west, so it holds the light late into the day. If you only have time for two Koh Larn beaches, make Samae one of them.
Tien Beach
Tien (Ta Yai) sits at the quieter south of Koh Larn and is where you go to escape the day-tripper crowds entirely. Small, clean and calm, with very clear water and just a scatter of deckchairs, it rewards the short ride out from the pier. Bring your own snorkel and you often have the coral to yourself. Nearby Nual Beach, sometimes called Monkey Beach, is another quiet option on the same side.
Quiet Beaches Near Pattaya
If your idea of a beach day does not include jet-skis, these three sit within an easy drive of the city and stay calm even in high season.
Bang Saray
About 20 km south of Pattaya, past Jomtien and Sattahip, Bang Saray is a working fishing village with a long, quiet beach and a row of excellent, cheap seafood restaurants on stilts over the water. The swimming is only fair, but nobody comes here to swim; they come for the slow pace, the fishing boats and the seafood. It makes a lovely half-day escape when the main beaches feel too much.
Bang Saen
Roughly 30 km north toward Chonburi, Bang Saen is the beach Bangkok and local Thai families pour into at the weekend, so it is livelier and more authentically Thai than touristy. Deckchairs, inner tubes, som tam vendors and a long flat beach. It is busiest on Saturdays and Sundays and much calmer midweek. Worth the short drive for a look at how Thais actually do the seaside.
Ban Amphur
Between Jomtien and Bang Saray, Ban Amphur is a quiet, local beach with cleaner-than-average water and very few tourists. There is not much to do beyond swim, laze and eat, which is exactly why the people who know it keep coming back. An easy add-on if you are already heading south to Bang Saray.
Water Sports on Pattaya's Beaches and Costs
Pattaya Beach, Jomtien and Tawaen on Koh Larn are the three water-sports hubs, and between them they run everything from a two-minute parasail to a beginner scuba dive. Prices are set on the sand and swing with the season and your haggling, so treat the figures below as typical starting rates and always agree the price and the number of rounds before you get in. For a deeper rundown of operators and safety, see our guide to water sports in Pattaya.
| Activity | Typical duration | Cost (Baht) | Cost (Rupees, approx) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parasailing | One round / flight | 400 to 600 B | Rs 1,050 to 1,550 |
| Jet-ski | 30 minutes | 1,000 to 1,500 B | Rs 2,600 to 3,900 |
| Banana boat | One ride | 300 to 400 B | Rs 800 to 1,050 |
| Speedboat to Koh Larn (charter) | Return, per boat | 2,000 to 3,500 B | Rs 5,200 to 9,100 |
| Sea-walking (Koh Larn) | 20 to 30 minutes | 900 to 1,200 B | Rs 2,350 to 3,100 |
| Snorkelling gear hire | Per day | 100 to 150 B | Rs 260 to 400 |
| Discover scuba dive (beginner) | Half day | 2,500 to 3,500 B | Rs 6,500 to 9,100 |
Rupee figures use an approximate rate of 1 Baht to about 2.6 Rupees and are for guidance only. The public ferry to Koh Larn, at around 30 Baht each way, is far cheaper than a speedboat charter if you are not in a hurry.
Best Time to Visit Pattaya's Beaches
For the beaches specifically, aim for November to February, the cool, dry season, when the Gulf of Thailand turns calm and clear, humidity drops and every ferry and water sport runs. March to May stays warm and largely calm but hot, with April the peak of the heat and Songkran's water fights. The green season from June to October brings short, heavy afternoon showers and the lowest prices; because Pattaya faces the sheltered gulf rather than the open Andaman Sea, the water stays swimmable and the mornings are usually clear enough for the beach. For the full month-by-month picture, see our best time to visit Pattaya guide.
How to Reach Pattaya's Beaches
Pattaya has no airport of its own; you fly into Bangkok and drive about two hours south. Once you are in town, getting between the beaches is cheap and simple.
• Along the mainland: shared songthaews (the blue pickup trucks) loop Beach Road and Second Road for about 10 to 20 Baht a hop, and reach Jomtien, Wong Amat and Naklua for a little more. A metered taxi or Grab is easiest for Cosy Beach and the Pratumnak coves.
• To Bang Saray, Ban Amphur and Bang Saen: hire a taxi, Grab or scooter; these sit 20 to 30 km out and are not on the songthaew loops.
• To Koh Larn (Coral Island): take a songthaew to Bali Hai Pier at the south end of Walking Street, then the public ferry (~30 Baht, ~45 min) to Na Baan or Tawaen, or charter a speedboat (~15 min). First ferries run mid-morning; check the last boat back before you sail.

Pattaya Travel FAQs
Which is the best beach in Pattaya?
For the classic Pattaya experience, water sports and sunsets, Pattaya Beach itself is the centre of it all. But for a relaxed swim and a full beach day, most travellers prefer Jomtien, just south over Pratumnak Hill, which is wider, calmer and cleaner. For the clearest water and coral, take the ferry to Koh Larn, Pattaya's real Coral Island.
What is the cleanest beach in Pattaya?
The cleanest swimming beaches on the mainland are Wong Amat in the north and Cosy Beach on Pratumnak Hill, both with clearer water and softer sand than the busy central strip. For genuinely clear, turquoise water, the island beaches on Koh Larn, especially Samae and Tien, are cleaner still, which is why the island is the top day-trip from Pattaya.
Is Pattaya Beach safe for swimming and families?
Pattaya Beach is safe enough but busy, with jet-skis and boats close to shore near the piers, so it is not ideal for young children. Families are usually happier at Jomtien, which is wider and calmer, or at Wong Amat in the north. On Koh Larn, Samae and Tien beaches are calm and clear. Always watch for the flags and keep clear of the marked boat lanes.
Which is better, Pattaya Beach or Jomtien Beach?
It depends on your day. Pattaya Beach is central, lively and best for water sports, people-watching and easy access to bars and malls. Jomtien, about 3 km south, is longer, quieter and better for a relaxed sunbathing and swimming day with family. Many visitors base at one and stroll the other; they are only a short songthaew ride apart.
What is Coral Island in Pattaya and how do I get there?
Coral Island is the local name for Koh Larn, a real island about 7 km off Pattaya with the area's clearest water, coral and best island beaches (Tawaen, Samae, Tien). Take a songthaew to Bali Hai Pier, then the public ferry for around 30 Baht (about 45 minutes) or charter a speedboat (about 15 minutes). It is a full-day trip and Pattaya's most popular excursion.
Are Pattaya's beaches good for snorkelling?
The mainland beaches are not great for snorkelling because the water is busy and not very clear. For snorkelling, head to Koh Larn: Samae Beach has coral within swimming distance, and quiet Tien Beach is good too. Bring or hire a mask and fins (around 100 to 150 Baht a day), and go on a calm, clear morning between November and April for the best visibility.
What water sports can you do on Pattaya's beaches and what do they cost?
Parasailing, jet-skiing, banana-boat rides, sea-walking and beginner scuba are all available, mainly on Pattaya Beach, Jomtien and Tawaen Beach on Koh Larn. Typical starting rates are around 400 to 600 Baht for a parasail, 1,000 to 1,500 Baht for 30 minutes on a jet-ski, and 300 to 400 Baht for a banana-boat ride. Prices are negotiated on the sand, so agree the rate and the number of rounds before you start.
What is the best time to visit Pattaya's beaches?
November to February is the best time, when the Gulf of Thailand is calm and clear, humidity is low and every ferry and water sport runs. March to May is hot but still calm, and the June to October green season brings short afternoon showers and the lowest prices. Because Pattaya faces the sheltered gulf, its sea stays swimmable even in the rainy months.
Which Pattaya beach is best for couples or a quiet day?
For couples and quiet, choose Wong Amat or Cosy Beach on the mainland, both cleaner and calmer than the centre, or escape to Tien Beach on Koh Larn. Further out, Bang Saray's fishing-village calm and stilted seafood restaurants make a romantic half-day. Avoid the central Pattaya Beach strip if a peaceful day is what you are after.
Can you do island hopping from Pattaya?
Yes. Koh Larn (Coral Island) is the main island, with several beaches of its own, and speedboat trips from Bali Hai Pier often add the smaller nearby islands of Koh Sak and Koh Phai (Bamboo Island) for snorkelling. A typical island-hopping day combines two or three beaches with snorkelling stops. The calm, clear November-to-April window is the best time for it.
