Jomtien Beach In Pattaya

Jomtien Beach in Pattaya

Enjoy the spectacularly clean and happening Jomtien Beach in Pattaya

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )

Jomtien Beach is the wide, easygoing stretch of sand about 3 km south of central Pattaya, and the beach most travellers pick when they want the sea without the crush of the Walking Street crowd. Locals call it Chom Thian. The sand runs for roughly 6 km, so there is room to swim, try a water sport or just sit with a plate of grilled seafood while the sun drops. This guide covers how to reach Jomtien, the best time to visit, what to do, where to stay and the one question first-timers always ask: Jomtien or Pattaya beach? We plan Pattaya trips for Indian travellers every week, so the details below come from what our teams and travellers actually check on the ground.

About Jomtien Beach in Pattaya

Jomtien is what Pattaya beach used to be back in the 1990s. Referred to locally as Chom Thian, it sits about 3 km south of its world-famous neighbour, and it lives an entirely different life. Where Pattaya beach has turned into a hotspot that thrives on foreign visitors, Jomtien is still the Thai beach. It draws local families and weekenders from Bangkok escaping the city, and its roughly 6 km of sand is far more spacious than Pattaya's, so there is space for everyone.

That local character shows up in the small things. Accommodation and food run cheaper here, and the open-air restaurants along the front serve straight Thai cooking, the kind that keeps the local crowd coming while Pattaya's restaurants chase an international menu. For a foreign visitor, that is the appeal: a real Thai beach town that is not bending itself to win tourists. The one landmark you cannot miss is the D Varee Jomtien Beach hotel, a 38-storey tower on the seafront with wide views over the bay.

Water sports are Jomtien's headline. The beach hosts sponsored events through the year, including the Jet Ski World Cup, and the operators along the sand rent everything from jet skis to parasailing rigs. When you want to slow down, the botanical gardens and water parks nearby fill an afternoon, and the sunset seen from a beachfront table, plate of Thai food in hand, is the moment most people remember.

How to Reach Jomtien Beach

Getting to Jomtien is easy once you are in Pattaya. The cheapest and most local way is the baht bus (songthaew) that runs along Jomtien Beach Road: hop on anywhere on the route, ring the bell to get off, and expect about 10 minutes and roughly 15 to 20 THB per person from central Pattaya. A metered taxi or Grab covers the same trip in a few minutes for more. If you are flying in, the closest airport is U-Tapao (UTP), around 30 to 40 minutes away by taxi. Most international arrivals land at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and reach Pattaya in about 2 hours by airport minibus, coach or private car, then switch to a baht bus for the last leg. For the full route breakdown, station details and current fares, see our Jomtien Beach: how to reach guide.

"From central Pattaya the baht bus down Thappraya and Jomtien Beach Road is quicker and far cheaper than a taxi, and it drops you right on the sand," says the TravelTriangle Thailand desk.

Best Time to Visit Jomtien Beach

The best time to visit Jomtien Beach is November to February, when the weather is cool and dry, the sea is calm enough for swimming and every water-sport operator is running. March to May turns hot and humid but stays mostly dry, and it brings thinner crowds and lower room rates. The monsoon runs June to October with frequent afternoon rain and a rougher sea, though showers often pass quickly and this is when you find the best deals.

Season Months Weather Good for
Peak (cool, dry) Nov to Feb Sunny, calm sea, about 24-32C Swimming, water sports, best all-round
Hot Mar to May Hot, humid, mostly dry Fewer crowds, lower room rates
Monsoon Jun to Oct Frequent rain, rougher sea Deals, green scenery, flexible plans

Top Things to Do at Jomtien Beach

Jomtien is a beach you can actually do things on, not just look at. Here is what fills a day, from the water out front to the markets and attractions a short ride away.

Thing to do Best for Good to know
Water sports (jet ski, parasailing) Adventure Operators along Jomtien Beach Road; agree the price first
Windsurfing and kite surfing Water-sports fans Best at the breezier Dongtan end; schools on the beach
Jomtien Night Market Food and shopping Evenings, off Thappraya Road; cheap Thai street food
Open-air seafood dinner Foodies Beachfront tables, about 600-1,000 THB for two
Pattaya Floating Market (nearby) Culture and photos About 10 minutes by road; boat rides and Thai snacks
Underwater World Pattaya (nearby) Families and rainy days Walk-through aquarium tunnel near Sukhumvit Road

Water sports on the sand

The strip along Jomtien Beach Road is the busiest water-sports run in Pattaya. You can take a jet ski out, go up on a parasail, ride a banana boat or try stand-up paddleboarding, and the windier Dongtan end at the southern tip is where windsurfers and kite surfers set up, with schools renting gear and running lessons. Always fix the price and check the equipment before you push off. If you would rather go under the surface, book a scuba diving or snorkeling day trip out to the islands off the coast.

Jomtien Night Market and seafood

As the beach empties, dinner moves to the Jomtien Night Market off Thappraya Road, where stalls sell grilled seafood, pad thai, mango sticky rice and cheap clothing. For a proper sit-down meal, the open-air restaurants along the front do the fresh Thai seafood Jomtien is known for, usually far cheaper than the tourist strips in central Pattaya. Aim for a beachfront table around sunset.

Markets and attractions nearby

A short ride from the sand opens up the rest of Pattaya. The Pattaya Floating Market recreates old canal-side Thailand with boat vendors and food stalls, Underwater World Pattaya is a walk-through aquarium that is ideal on a wet afternoon, and Pattaya Park adds a beachfront tower jump and water park for families. Further out, the Nong Nooch tropical garden is worth a half day for its landscaped grounds and cultural shows.

Jomtien vs Pattaya Beach: Where Should You Stay?

Yes, Jomtien is part of Pattaya, just the quieter southern end of the same bay, about 3 km down the coast. That short distance changes the trip completely, and it is the real question behind where to book. The short version: stay at Jomtien if you want space, a swimmable sea and calmer evenings, and stay in central Pattaya if nightlife and being in the middle of everything matter more. Here is how the two compare on the things travellers actually weigh up.

What matters Jomtien Beach Central Pattaya Beach
Beach width and length About 6 km, wide, room to spread out Shorter, narrower, often crowded
Water and swimming Calmer and cleaner, better for a dip Busier and murkier near the strip
Crowd and vibe Quieter, local and expat, relaxed Busy, touristy, always on
Nightlife Low-key beach bars and night market Walking Street, clubs, full-on
Family-friendly High: space and a calmer sea Lower: nightlife-heavy centre
Value for money Cheaper stays and Thai eats Pricier, tourist-priced
Food Open-air Thai seafood, night market International menus, tourist restaurants

For couples and families, and anyone who wants the beach itself to be the point, Jomtien wins. If you are travelling to Pattaya mainly for the nightlife and shopping, base yourself in the centre and come to Jomtien for a calmer beach day.

Where to Stay near Jomtien Beach

Jomtien has rooms for every budget, most of them within a short walk of the sand. Guesthouses and small hotels a street or two back run cheapest, beachfront condos and 3 to 4 star hotels sit in the middle, and towers like the 38-storey D Varee anchor the upper end with sea-view rooms. Because it draws long-stay visitors and families, Jomtien also has plenty of serviced apartments, which suit anyone staying a week or more.

Most travellers pair Jomtien with the rest of Pattaya and Bangkok on one trip. If you would rather have the hotels, transfers and sightseeing sorted in one booking, browse our Bangkok Pattaya honeymoon packages and Bangkok Pattaya family tour packages, each customisable around a Jomtien beach stay. Book the November to February peak well ahead, as the best-value rooms sell out first.

Beaches and Attractions Near Jomtien

Jomtien works well as a base, with more beaches and sights a short ride away.

Dongtan Beach. A quieter, tree-lined stretch at the northern end of Jomtien, popular for a calmer swim and a shady spot under the pines, and the launch area for windsurfing.

Na Jomtien. The southern extension of the beach, even more low-key, with newer resorts and a string of beach clubs that suit a slow day away from the crowds.

Coral Island (Koh Larn). The most popular day trip from Pattaya, a short boat ride to clearer water and white-sand beaches for snorkelling and swimming. See our Coral Island guide.

Sanctuary of Truth. An all-teak carved temple on the Pattaya headland north of Jomtien, one of the area's most striking sights. See our Sanctuary of Truth guide.

Walking Street. Central Pattaya's famous nightlife strip, about 15 minutes north, for anyone who wants a night out after quiet days on Jomtien. See our Walking Street guide.

Overall, we had a very good experience with our travel agent. The trip was planned well, all commitments were fulfilled as promised, and the coordination throughout the journey was smooth. The team was responsive, professional, and ensured that transfers, sightseeing, and bookings were arranged prop
erly, making the trip hassle-free. The only major disappointment was the hotel selected in Pattaya. The rooms were quite compact, we encountered cockroaches in the room, and the towels provided were not up to the expected standard. This part of the experience could have been much better. The itinerary was well designed overall; however, for some outdoor attractions, scheduling visits during the evening would have been preferable, especially during the summer season, to avoid the intense daytime heat and make sightseeing more comfortable. Despite these points, we appreciate the effort and support provided by the travel agent. The trip was enjoyable, and with a little more attention to hotel selection and timing of certain activities, the experience could have been excellent.

We recently booked an 11-day, 10-night land package to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, covering Bangkok, Phuket, and Krabi. Traveling with a 2-year-old can be challenging, but the overall experience was smooth and well-coordinated. Our itinerary was packed with great activities. In Bangkok, Safa
ri World was a huge hit with our little one, and the temple tours were beautiful. The Krabi leg was fantastic—the 7 Island Tour and the Jungle Tour were standouts. In Phuket, the Phi Phi Island tour and the Old City tour were both well-managed and enjoyable. Since we only opted for the land package and airport transfers, we relied heavily on their punctuality. The transfers were seamless, which is a massive relief when you’re hauling luggage and a toddler! The only disappointment was the Elephant Sanctuary tour. It felt very rushed, lasting only about an hour and a half, which didn't quite meet our expectations compared to the quality of the other excursions. Overall, we had a wonderful family holiday. Travtree Holidays provided great service and reliable transport. Highly recommended for families looking for a well-organized Thailand experience!

We recently booked our family trip to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, and it turned out to be an absolutely wonderful experience from start to finish. The entire itinerary was very well organized, making the trip smooth and stress-free—especially important when traveling with young children (our ki
ds are 2 and 5 years old). All pick-ups were perfectly on time, and the vehicles provided were clean, comfortable, and spacious, which made commuting easy and relaxing for the whole family. The hotels arranged for us were excellent—family-friendly, comfortable, and conveniently located. Everything was thoughtfully planned, allowing us to enjoy each destination without any hassle. A special mention goes to our visits to Siam Ocean World (sea life) and Safari World & Marine Park. Both experiences were incredibly impressive and became the highlight of our trip. Siam Water World was fantastic for the kids, with exciting views of the sea creatures penguins etc that they thoroughly enjoyed. Safari World was equally amazing—the safari drive and shows were captivating, and seeing the animals up close was a memorable experience for both adults and children. Overall, Travtree Holidays ensured a seamless, enjoyable, and perfectly managed vacation for our family. We truly appreciate their professionalism and attention to detail and would highly recommend them to anyone planning a trip to Thailand—especially families traveling with young kids.

    Pattaya Travel FAQs

    Is Jomtien Beach in Pattaya?

Yes. Jomtien is part of Pattaya, sitting about 3 km south of the central beach on the same bay. Locals call it Chom Thian. It is quieter, wider and more family-friendly than the main Pattaya strip, but it is well within the city and easy to reach by baht bus in about 10 minutes.

Is Jomtien Beach better than Pattaya Beach?

It depends on what you want. Jomtien has a wider, cleaner beach, a calmer sea for swimming, cheaper Thai food and a more relaxed pace, so it suits families and couples. Central Pattaya is livelier, more central and better for nightlife and shopping. Many travellers stay at Jomtien and visit Pattaya for a night out.

How do I get to Jomtien from Pattaya, and what does it cost?

The easiest way is the baht bus (songthaew) along Jomtien Beach Road, about 10 minutes for roughly 10 to 20 THB per person. Get on anywhere on the route and ring the bell to get off. A metered taxi or Grab covers the same trip in a few minutes for more.

What water sports can you do at Jomtien Beach?

Jomtien is Pattaya's main water-sports beach. You can ride a jet ski, go up on a parasail, take a banana-boat ride or try stand-up paddleboarding, and the breezier Dongtan end is the spot for windsurfing and kite surfing, with schools renting gear. Fix the price and check the equipment before you start.

What is the best time to visit Jomtien Beach?

November to February is the best window, with cool, dry weather and a calm sea for swimming and water sports. March to May is hot but quieter and cheaper. The monsoon runs June to October with frequent afternoon rain and a rougher sea, though it brings the lowest prices.

Is Jomtien Beach good for families and swimming?

Yes. The beach is wide with plenty of space, the water is generally calmer than central Pattaya, and there is a shady, tree-lined stretch at Dongtan that families like. Nearby attractions such as Underwater World Pattaya and Pattaya Park water park make it easy to fill a day with the kids.

    What is Dongtan Beach?

Dongtan is the quieter, pine-shaded northern section of Jomtien Beach. It is calmer and more sheltered than the main stretch, popular for a relaxed swim and shade under the trees, and it is the launch area for windsurfing and kite surfing.

Where should I stay near Jomtien Beach?

Jomtien has budget guesthouses a street back from the sand, beachfront condos and 3 to 4 star hotels in the mid-range, and sea-view towers like the D Varee at the top end. Serviced apartments suit longer stays. Booking a Bangkok Pattaya package is the simplest way to bundle a Jomtien stay with transfers and sightseeing.
