How to Reach Pattaya
Indulge in nightlife and adventure, like never before!
Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )
Pattaya has no large international airport of its own, so nearly everyone flies into Bangkok and drives down the coast. The closest airport is U-Tapao, also called Rayong-Pattaya International (UTP), about 45 km south of the city and roughly a 40 to 45 minute drive. It runs only a handful of regional and charter routes, so for most travellers from India the practical gateway is Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi (BKK), about 120 km away and 1.5 to 2 hours by road. Here is the short version before the detail:
• U-Tapao / Rayong-Pattaya International (UTP): about 45 km, a 40 to 45 minute drive. The nearest airport, but limited routes.
• Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok (BKK): about 120 km, 1.5 to 2 hours by road. The main international gateway, where most flights from India land.
• Don Mueang, Bangkok (DMK): about 150 km, 2.5 to 3 hours by road. Bangkok's low-cost carrier hub.
Which is the nearest airport to Pattaya?
The nearest airport to Pattaya is U-Tapao (UTP), officially U-Tapao-Rayong-Pattaya International Airport. It sits in Ban Chang district, Rayong province, about 45 km south of central Pattaya, so it is actually a little closer to Rayong than to the beach strip. A taxi or minibus takes 40 to 45 minutes on a clear run, longer if Sukhumvit Road is busy.
The nearest international airport with wide connectivity is a different answer. U-Tapao handles some regional flights and seasonal charters, but the airport that most international carriers use is Suvarnabhumi (BKK) in Bangkok. So if you are searching for the closest airport, the answer is U-Tapao (UTP); if you want the airport that actually gets you a flight from India, that is Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Don Mueang (DMK), Bangkok's second airport, is the low-cost option and the farthest of the three from Pattaya.
Airports near Pattaya, compared
| Airport | IATA | Distance from Pattaya | By road | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| U-Tapao / Rayong-Pattaya Intl | UTP | ~45 km | 40-45 min | Closest airport; limited regional and charter routes |
| Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok | BKK | ~120 km | 1.5-2 h | Main gateway; most flights from India land here |
| Don Mueang, Bangkok | DMK | ~150 km | 2.5-3 h | Bangkok's low-cost carrier hub (AirAsia, etc.) |
| Trat | TDX | ~200 km+ | 4-5 h | Koh Chang side only; not practical for Pattaya |
For a trip from India, the choice is simple. Book your international flight into Suvarnabhumi (BKK), then take a bus, minibus or taxi to Pattaya. Use U-Tapao (UTP) only if you find a convenient regional connection, and Don Mueang (DMK) if your low-cost fare routes through it.
How to reach Pattaya by air from India
There are no direct flights from India to Pattaya itself, but Bangkok is one of the best-connected cities in Asia and the flight is short. Nonstop services from the main Indian metros to Suvarnabhumi (BKK) run about 4 to 4.5 hours: roughly 4 hours 20 minutes from Delhi, 4.5 hours from Mumbai, 4 hours from Chennai and about 4 hours 15 minutes from Bengaluru. The aerial distance from India is around 3,000 km and up depending on your city (close to 3,040 km from Delhi), so ignore any figure that quotes 4,000 km or more.
Carriers flying nonstop into Bangkok include Air India, IndiGo, Thai Airways and Thai AirAsia, with one-stop options on Emirates, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines. Some low-cost fares land at Don Mueang (DMK) rather than Suvarnabhumi, so check which Bangkok airport your ticket uses before you book an onward transfer. Once you land, Pattaya is a straightforward road trip south, covered next.
From the airport to Pattaya: buses, minibuses and taxis
From Suvarnabhumi (BKK) the easiest onward options are the direct coach and a private taxi. Roong Reuang Coach and Bell Travel Service both run scheduled buses from the airport to Pattaya's Jomtien and North Pattaya bus stations through the day, and they are the cheapest comfortable way down. A pre-booked shared minibus runs about 200 to 250 THB per seat, while a metered or private taxi is roughly 700 to 800 THB, and a fixed airport taxi can be closer to 1,000 THB or more depending on the counter and time of day. All prices need a quick check before you travel, as operators revise them.
From U-Tapao (UTP) the airport minibus and metered taxis cover the short hop into Pattaya in well under an hour. From Don Mueang (DMK) you can still reach Pattaya by coach or taxi, but the extra distance across Bangkok makes it the slowest of the three transfers.
By road and bus from Bangkok
Pattaya is one of the easiest day trips out of Bangkok, and the coach network is excellent. Luxury buses leave Ekkamai Eastern Bus Terminal every 30 minutes or so and reach Pattaya in about two hours via Motorway 7. You can also pick up services from Mo Chit Northern Terminal and Sai Tai Mai Southern Terminal, and many hotels arrange pickups along Sukhumvit Road. If you are driving, it is a simple run of roughly 120 km down Motorway 7.
Reaching Pattaya overland all the way from India, via the India-Myanmar-Thailand Friendship Highway from Manipur, is technically possible but is not a practical route for a normal holiday. Border formalities and driving days make flying the sensible choice.
By train
There is a rail option that no flight comparison site mentions. A local train runs from Bangkok's old Hua Lamphong station toward the eastern seaboard, and the journey to the Pattaya area takes about 3 to 3.5 hours, followed by a short drive into town. Service is limited to a small number of departures a day and it is slower than the coach, but it is cheap and a relaxed way to see the countryside if you are not in a hurry.
India to Pattaya: distance and travel time
The honest headline number is door-to-door time, not raw distance, because the trip is a short flight followed by a short drive. Here is what to expect from the major Indian cities, using a nonstop flight into Bangkok (BKK) plus the road transfer to Pattaya.
| From (India) | Nonstop flight to Bangkok (BKK) | Road: Bangkok to Pattaya | Approx. door-to-door |
|---|---|---|---|
| New Delhi | ~4 h 20 m | 1.5-2 h | ~6-8 h |
| Mumbai | ~4 h 30 m | 1.5-2 h | ~6-8 h |
| Chennai | ~4 h | 1.5-2 h | ~6-8 h |
| Bengaluru | ~4 h 15 m | 1.5-2 h | ~6-8 h |
Door-to-door totals include a realistic buffer for immigration, baggage and the transfer, and they assume a nonstop flight. Connecting fares through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or the Gulf add several hours. Travelling from Delhi specifically? By Air
The flying distance between India and Pattaya varies from 2500 km to 3000 km, which is much less than the road distance. However, it is not feasible to reach Pattaya to India by flight. The nearest airport in Pattaya is the U-Tapao Airport, which is located 30 km away at Sattahip, having limited connectivity to a few of destinations. But the most frequented airport for going to Pattaya is Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Most Indian flights, like Delhi to Pattaya or Mumbai to Pattaya make a stop at Bangkok, while some others halt at Singapore or Kuala Lumpur. The fastest flight takes around 11 hours 30 minutes total, done by the Thai Airways. Pattaya being only 150 km away from Bangkok, most people like to break the journey, and take another flight or minivan from outside the airport to Pattaya.
By Road
Going from India to Pattaya via road is not a very convenient journey, but also not an impossible one. The India-Myanmar-Thailand Highway road has made it possible for anyone to drive down to Bangkok from Manipur. From there one can take one of the many options to go cover the distance between Bangkok and Pattaya. There are the pre-booked mini buses that cost around 200-250 TBH or the cabs that take some 700-800 TBH. There are Bangkok airport to Pattaya bus services available from Transfer Centre of Suvarnabhumi Airport every 1.5 hours. If one is not going straight from the Bangkok airport but after a few days stay in the capital, they can easily take a luxury bus from Ekkamai Bus Terminal in eastern Bangkok. They depart every 30 minutes throughout the day. Buses ply from other locations as well, like Sukhumvit Road, Mo Chit Northern Terminal and Sai Tai Mai Southern Terminal.

Pattaya Travel FAQs
What is the nearest airport to Pattaya?
The nearest airport is U-Tapao, or Rayong-Pattaya International (UTP), about 45 km south of central Pattaya. That is roughly a 40 to 45 minute drive. It runs limited regional and charter flights, so most international travellers fly into Bangkok instead.
Does Pattaya have its own airport?
Not a major one. U-Tapao (UTP) serves the Pattaya and Rayong area but handles only a small number of regional and seasonal routes. For a flight from India you will land in Bangkok and travel on by road.
Which is the nearest international airport to Pattaya?
Suvarnabhumi (BKK) in Bangkok is the nearest international airport with wide connectivity, about 120 km away and 1.5 to 2 hours by road. U-Tapao is physically closer but has far fewer international flights, so BKK is the practical answer for most trips.
How far is Pattaya from Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport?
About 120 km, which takes 1.5 to 2 hours by road down Motorway 7 depending on traffic. Don Mueang (DMK), Bangkok's other airport, is farther at about 150 km and 2.5 to 3 hours.
How do I get from Bangkok airport to Pattaya, and what does it cost?
Take a Roong Reuang Coach or Bell Travel Service bus from Suvarnabhumi to Pattaya's Jomtien or North Pattaya bus station, or a taxi. A shared minibus is about 200 to 250 THB a seat and a metered or private taxi is roughly 700 to 800 THB, with fixed airport taxis closer to 1,000 THB. Confirm current fares before you travel.
How do I reach Pattaya from India?
Fly nonstop to Bangkok (BKK) in about 4 to 4.5 hours from the major metros, then take a bus, minibus or taxi to Pattaya, roughly another 1.5 to 2 hours. Allowing for immigration and the transfer, plan on about 6 to 8 hours door to door on a nonstop routing.
Is there a train to Pattaya?
Yes. A local train runs from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station toward the eastern seaboard and reaches the Pattaya area in about 3 to 3.5 hours, plus a short transfer into town. Departures are limited and it is slower than the coach, but it is inexpensive.
How long does it take to reach Pattaya from the airport?
From U-Tapao (UTP) it is 40 to 45 minutes. From Suvarnabhumi (BKK) allow 1.5 to 2 hours, and from Don Mueang (DMK) about 2.5 to 3 hours because of the extra distance across Bangkok.
