Sunder Nagar, Mandi: Lake, Temples and Places to Visit (Himachal Pradesh)

Enjoy a vacation in Sunder Nagar to breathe in amazing sights and views

Rated 4.20/5 ( based on 10840 reviews )

Sunder Nagar sits at about 1,174 metres in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district, roughly 25 km south of Mandi town on the Chandigarh-to-Manali highway (NH-3, the old NH-21). Most people come for one thing, the wide, still Sunder Nagar Lake, the reservoir built for the Beas-Sutlej Link hydro-electric project. Ringing it are temple-topped hills, shaded walking tracks and the Sukhdev Vatika garden. The town was once the seat of the princely state of Suket, and a few of its older buildings still carry that history. If you are trying to settle which state it is in, how high it sits, or how far it is from Chandigarh, this page answers those first, then walks through what is genuinely worth your time.

How to Reach Sunder Nagar

Sunder Nagar is an easy road stop because the Chandigarh-Manali highway runs straight through it, so most travellers reach it by bus or car rather than by air or rail. Here is each option with the real distances.

Mode Route and distance Notes
By air Bhuntar (Kullu) airport, about 90 km Nearest airport; limited flights. Chandigarh (~175 km) and Delhi have far wider connectivity, then continue by road.
By train Kiratpur Sahib (broad gauge) ~105 km; Joginder Nagar narrow-gauge toy train ~80 km Pathankot broad-gauge railhead is about 210 km. For most, road from the nearest station is the practical last leg.
By road Chandigarh ~175 km; Mandi ~25 km; Manali ~135 km via NH-3 Volvo and HRTC buses on the Chandigarh-Mandi-Manali route pass through. Self-drive and taxis run all year.

If you are booking the whole trip, Sunder Nagar folds neatly into any Himachal tour package that runs the Mandi-Kullu-Manali road, since it is on the way rather than a detour.

Best Time to Visit Sunder Nagar

The town is pleasant for most of the year, but two windows stand out.

March to June (spring and early summer)

Days are warm and clear, the lake stays full, and boating and lakeside walks are at their best. This is peak season and the busiest stretch for the temple circuit.

September to November (post-monsoon autumn)

The rain has washed the hills green, crowds thin out, and the light is good for the drive up from Mandi. A quieter alternative to the summer rush.

Avoid July and August if you can, when the monsoon can trigger landslides and slow the highway. Winter (December to February) is cold and clear; the higher Murari Devi ridge above town often sees snow in January, so check road conditions before heading up.

Places to Visit in Sunder Nagar

The pull here is a small cluster of a lake, a few working temples and a garden, all within a short drive of each other. You can cover the main ones in a relaxed day.

Sunder Nagar Lake

The reservoir that gives the town its shape. It was created for the Beas-Sutlej Link project (the BBMB reservoir), and it is where locals and visitors gather in the evening for a walk along the water or a short paddle-boat ride. The road along the lake is flat and shaded, which makes it the easiest stroll in town.

Mahamaya Temple

The best-known temple in Sunder Nagar, set on a hill at about 1,134 m and reached by a stepped climb. It draws thousands of devotees through the year and gives you a clear view over the town and lake from the top. Formerly known as Suket, the old princely town grew around shrines like this one.

Murari Devi Temple

A harder, higher pilgrimage on Murari Dhar ridge at about 2,133 m (7,000 ft), reached on foot from the road head. Local belief credits its origins to the Pandavas. The ridge often gets snow in January, so it suits a clear-weather day trip rather than a monsoon or deep-winter visit.

Bhutnath Temple

Built in the 1520s in the centre of town and dedicated to Lord Shiva, this is the temple most people pass first. It comes alive at Mahashivratri in spring (usually February or March), when the town marks the festival with real energy.

Sukhdev Vatika

A garden near the BBMB reservoir tied to the saint Sukhdev, with a pond and an old cave that local tradition dates to the Puranic period. It is a low-effort, shaded spot to slow down between temple visits.

Sheetla Mata Mandir and Rewalsar

The Sheetla Mata temple sits about 2 km from the BBMB control gate and rounds out the local temple circuit. A little further out, Rewalsar (Triveni) is a lake known for its floating islands of reed, ringed by hills and revered by Hindus, Buddhists and Sikhs alike; it makes a natural half-day pairing with Sunder Nagar.

Things to Do in Sunder Nagar

• Take an evening paddle-boat ride and a lakeside walk on Sunder Nagar Lake.

• Climb to Mahamaya Temple for the view, then work the town temple circuit down to Bhutnath and Sheetla Mata.

• Time a spring visit with Mahashivratri at Bhutnath Temple for the local festival crowd.

• Use the town as a trek base: Prashar Lake and Barot Valley are both within striking distance.

Nearby Attractions

Pandoh Dam

About 20 km towards Mandi, Pandoh Dam holds back the Beas for hydro-power and gives you a broad, blue-green reservoir framed by wooded slopes. It is a quick photo stop on the drive north.

Prashar Lake

One of the more offbeat spots in the region, Prashar Lake sits at about 2,730 m with a three-storey pagoda temple on its bank and snow peaks behind it. The short trek up rewards you with views over the fast-flowing Beas valley.

Barot Valley

A green, low-key valley known for trout streams and quiet camping, reached over the Jogindernagar road. It suits travellers who want to trade the temple town for a couple of slow days in the hills.

    Mandi Travel FAQs

Which state is Sunder Nagar in?

Sunder Nagar is in Himachal Pradesh, in the Mandi district, about 25 km south of Mandi town. It is not the same as the Sunder Nagar colony in Delhi or the Sunder Nagar locality in Mumbai's Malad, which share the name but are unrelated places.

What is the altitude of Sunder Nagar above sea level?

The town centre sits at about 1,174 metres (roughly 3,850 ft), the figure used by Himachal Pradesh tourism. The nearby Murari Devi temple ridge rises much higher, to about 2,133 metres (7,000 ft), which is why it can catch snow in January while the town stays clear.

Is Sunder Nagar a hill station?

Yes. Sunder Nagar is a low-key Himachal hill town at about 1,174 metres, known for its lake, shaded walks and hilltop temples rather than for nightlife or big resorts. It works best as a calm stop on the Mandi-Kullu-Manali route or a short getaway from Mandi.

What is Sunder Nagar famous for?

Its lake. Sunder Nagar Lake is the reservoir built for the Beas-Sutlej Link hydro-electric project (the BBMB reservoir), and it anchors the town's evening walks and boating. The town is also known for the hilltop Mahamaya Temple, the Bhutnath Temple and the Sukhdev Vatika garden.

How far is Sunder Nagar from Chandigarh and Mandi?

Sunder Nagar is about 25 km from Mandi (around 45 minutes) and about 175 km from Chandigarh by road, which is a 5 to 6 hour drive on the NH-3 Chandigarh-Manali highway. Palampur is roughly 90 km and Manali about 135 km away.

What is the best time to visit Sunder Nagar?

March to June for warm, clear weather and full-lake boating, or September to November for green post-monsoon hills and thinner crowds. Avoid July and August, when monsoon rain can trigger landslides on the highway. Winter is cold, and the higher Murari Devi ridge can see snow in January.

How do I reach Sunder Nagar (nearest airport and railway station)?

The nearest airport is Bhuntar near Kullu, about 90 km away, though Chandigarh and Delhi have far more flights and are an easy road continuation. The nearest broad-gauge railhead is Kiratpur Sahib (about 105 km); the Joginder Nagar narrow-gauge toy train is about 80 km. Most people arrive by road, as the Chandigarh-Manali highway passes through town.

What are the famous temples in Sunder Nagar?

The Sheetla Mata Temple, Murari Devi Temple, Naina Mata Mandir, and Shri Pipleshwar Mahadev are some of the famous temples in Sunder Nagar.
