About Christ Church in Shimla
Christ Church in Shimla is the second oldest church in all of India and is constructed in the Neo-Gothic style. It is located in the area known as The Ridge in Shimla and is a popular tourist spot apart from being a revered place of worship. Towards the night the church is lit up in a beautiful way, but during Christmas and Easter celebrations, it is decorated like a bride about to walk down the aisle. Midnight mass is also held here, and prayer services are held in both Hindi and English.
Architecture of Christ Church
With its Neo-Catholic style, the architecture of Christ Church is quite glorious in appearance. The most striking features of this architectural marvel are its windows, which are decked with brass plaques and colored glasses. Moreover, these windows represent hope, faith, charity, patience, humility, and fortitude. Besides that, the 90 feet towers, five tubular bells, and a clock are also quite an attraction.
History of Christ Church
As a huge flock of Britishers and Anglo-Indians, who were followers of Christianity, were residing in Shimla during the British Raj, thy requested the government to build a church. Hence, the construction of the Christ Church in Shimla started in the year 1846. And, it took around 11 years to erect this Christ Church in Shimla. Since then, it became a prime attraction to explore in Shimla.
Christ Church Library
While, as the church is decorated with lights at night, it looks even more stunning. Apart from that, there is the Christ Church Library located next to the church. Constructed by James Ransome in the year 1910, this library boasts an amazing collection of books and ancient scriptures.
