Bali Safari and Marine Park (Taman Safari Bali)

Bali Safari and Marine Park, officially Taman Safari Bali, is a safari park and aquarium complex in Serongga, Gianyar, about 35 to 45 minutes from Ubud and 60 to 75 minutes from Kuta. The day park opens from 9 am to 5:30 pm every day, a separate Night Safari runs from 6 pm to 9 pm, and most visitors need 4 to 6 hours. It opened in November 2007 as the Bali branch of Taman Safari Indonesia, and the park counts more than 1,000 animals from over 100 species, including endangered Komodo dragons, orangutans, Sumatran tigers and the Bali starling, also called the Bali mynah.

You see most of it from a 30-minute enclosed tram, then walk between presentations, feeding stations, the Bali Agung theatre and the Water Play zone. Since late 2024 the complex also holds Marine Safari Bali, an aquarium with its own ticket. The "Marine Park" name dates from the 2007 opening, long before the aquarium, which is where most of the confusion comes from. • Arrive at 9 am and ride the tram first. The animals are up and the queue at the Toraja Terminal is short.

• Plan the middle of the day around the 11 am to 3 pm feeding window at Nkuchiro (giraffes, meerkats, pygmy hippos).

• Skip Mondays if you want Bali Agung. The show runs 3 pm to 4 pm, Tuesday to Sunday only.

• Do not expect an elephant ride. None is on the 2026 schedule, and a 2025 national circular bars them.

• Reserve the park shuttle when you book. Kuta pickups leave at 8:30 am and 9 am, and seats are limited to 12.

Things to do at Bali Safari and Marine Park

The park is laid out as a loop. You enter through the Ganesha gateway, the tram leaves from the Toraja Terminal, and everything else (stages, feeding stations, restaurants, Water Play) sits around a central walking circuit. Here is what each part is actually like.

Safari Journey tram

The Safari Journey is the reason to come. An enclosed tram takes you through open habitats grouped by region, Indonesia, India and Africa, over about 30 minutes. Trams leave from the Toraja Terminal between 9 am and 5:15 pm. Expect tigers, including the white tigers, then zebras, rhinos, hippos and lions on the African plains, with deer and other grazers walking right up to the tram. Morning rides see the most movement. For a private version, the park sells a VIP 4x4 Jeep Safari.

Animal, tiger and elephant presentations

Three types of keeper-led presentations run twice a day. The Animal Educational Presentation is at the Hanuman Stage (10:15 am and 4 pm). The Tiger Educational Presentation is at the Harimau Amphitheatre (11 am and 2:15 pm). The Elephant Educational Presentation is at Kampung Gajah (11:35 am and 4:30 pm). Each lasts 20 to 25 minutes. They are talks with demonstrations, not circus acts, and they are the best way to see the tigers up close.

Feeding sessions and animal encounters

This is where children light up. Giraffe, meerkat and pygmy hippo feeding run from 11 am to 3 pm at Nkuchiro, where you hand leaves to a giraffe from a raised deck. Feed the Predator (2 pm to 3:30 pm, from the Junction Area) takes you into the predator zone in a caged vehicle to feed the big cats under keeper supervision, and crocodile feeding runs Thursday to Sunday from 1 pm. There are also bird, iguana and snake encounters, a proboscis monkey (bekantan) keeper talk at 2 pm, and orangutans at the Banyan Court playground from 12:30 pm.

Fun Zone and Water Play

Older guides call this a water park. Water Play is really a splash zone with shallow pools, slides and fountains inside the Fun Zone, alongside a spinning coaster and a flume ride. Both open from 11 am to 5 pm. Keep your belongings safe while the children are in the water, and bring swimwear and a towel.

Bali Agung show

Bali Agung is a staged retelling of a Balinese legend with a large cast, music and dance, in a purpose-built theatre near the entrance. It plays from 3 pm to 4 pm, Tuesday to Sunday. Packages such as Jungle Hopper Legend include a seat. It is the best indoor hour of the day if the afternoon turns wet.

Tsavo Lion Restaurant and Nkuchiro

You can eat with lions on the other side of the glass. At the Tsavo Lion Restaurant a glass wall separates your table from the lion enclosure, and the Breakfast With Lion package is served there in the morning. At the Nkuchiro balcony you eat at giraffe height. Uma Restaurant handles the set lunch on the Dragon package. Outside food is not allowed, and bags are checked at the gate.

Mara River Safari Lodge

You can also sleep inside the park. The Mara River Safari Lodge is an African-themed hotel inside the park, with rooms that look onto the animal panorama and free park access for guests. Room types include the Twiga and Swala deluxe rooms, the two-bedroom Kifaru family bungalow and the three-bedroom Tembo bungalow. It suits families who want the day park, the Night Safari and an early tram the next morning without the drive back.

Bali Safari timings and daily schedule 2026

The Day Safari runs from 9 am to 5:30 pm and the Night Safari from 6 pm to 9 pm, every day except Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence, when the whole island shuts down for 24 hours. Inside those hours each activity keeps its own slot. This is the official 2026 schedule, which the park notes can change for weather or animal welfare.

Some guides call this an 8-hour safari. The tram ride itself is 30 minutes, and the day is long because of everything around it. If you arrive at 9 am, you can ride the tram, catch the 10:15 am and 11 am presentations, feed the giraffes and still be at Bali Agung by 3 pm.

Night Safari at Bali Safari Park

The Night Safari is a separate evening ticket from 6 pm to 9 pm, and the ticket counter closes at 8 pm. It is the same habitats seen from an enclosed tram after dark, when lions, tigers and hippos are awake and moving instead of sleeping in the shade. The package adds dinner and a fire show near the entrance, so plan on the full three hours.

Two things are worth knowing. The tram is caged for your safety, so you stay protected even when an animal comes right up to the bars. And the light is low, so photos are hard. Plan to watch rather than shoot. For families, it works best with children aged about 6 and up who can last until 9 pm. The official shuttle for the Night Safari leaves Bali Dynasty in Kuta and Blu-Zea in Seminyak at 4 pm and drops back after 9 pm. Varuna, the underwater theatrical show at Marine Safari Bali, has day and evening performances and is ticketed separately.

What is Marine Safari Bali?

Marine Safari Bali is the aquarium inside the Taman Safari Bali complex, opened in late 2024, and it is a separate attraction with its own ticket. You walk through six zones that follow water from land to sea: Rainforest, River Monster, River, Estuary, Coastal and Ocean. The park says it holds over 10,000 fish from 300 species, plus marine mammals and Humboldt penguins.

Inside you can join a ray feeding session, the Penguin Keeper Talk and the Fin-Tastic Talk, and there is the Pachamaya show. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours. Packages are sold as Clownfish, Sealion, VIP and Premium, and Varuna, the underwater theatrical show with a dining option, is sold on its own. If you have one day and young children, pick either the safari or the aquarium. If you have a full day, do the tram in the morning and the aquarium in the hot early afternoon.

Elephant rides at Bali Safari in 2026

Elephant rides no longer appear on the park's 2026 activity schedule. Indonesia's Ministry of Forestry issued Circular Letter No. 6 of 2025, which bars elephant riding at conservation institutions, signed on 18 December 2025, and Bali's conservation agency began enforcing it in January 2026, as reported by World Animal Protection and Travel Weekly. Some older guides, and one line on the park's own homepage, still mention an Elephant Back Safari. It is not on the current schedule, so ask the park before you pay for anything sold as a ride.

What you can still do is gentler, and better for photos too. The Elephant Care Experience (9:30 am to 4 pm) puts you alongside keepers at bath and feeding time. The Signature Elephant Encounter (11 am to 4 pm) is a guided river walk next to the herd. The Ganesha Cultural Elephant Encounter runs for 30 minutes at 1 pm, and the free Elephant Educational Presentation plays at 11:35 am and 4:30 pm. The park's elephants are Sumatran elephants, a critically endangered subspecies it breeds as part of its conservation programme.

Animals you'll see at Bali Safari Park

More than 100 species live here, and the tram groups them by region. These are the ones visitors ask about most.

The Bali starling is one of the rarest birds on earth and found wild only on Bali. The park breeds and releases it, along with Sumatran tigers and elephants. If you want to see one, ask a keeper at the bird area.

How to reach Bali Safari and Marine Park

Bali Safari and Marine Park sits on the Ida Bagus Mantra bypass on Bali's east coast, so the drive is easiest from Ubud and Sanur and longest from the west-coast beach towns. There is no public bus. You have four realistic options: the park's own shuttle, a private driver, Grab or Gojek, or a scooter.

Official park shuttle

The park runs its own shuttle, and a reservation is required. Its latest published offer made it free with selected official packages (Dragon, Safari Lion, Night Safari and Breakfast With Lion for the safari, plus the main Marine Safari and Varuna packages), so ask whether your package qualifies when you book. Any seats left an hour before departure are sold to the public at Rp 100,000 (about Rs 525) per person, first come, first served. Each run takes a maximum of 12 people. Private driver, Grab and Gojek

A private car suits most families better than the shuttle, because you set the times. A full-day private driver from Kuta or Seminyak is the most common choice and lets you add Tegenungan or Goa Gajah on the way back. Grab and Gojek cars will drop you at the gate easily. Getting one back at 5:30 pm is harder, because few drivers wait out in Serongga, so book the return in advance or keep your driver. There is a large car park at the entrance.

Flying in from India

Bali Safari Park tickets and packages in brief

Half-day and full-day plans

The schedule is built so that a 9 am arrival gets the most out of the day. Both plans below follow the official 2026 timings.

Half day (9 am to 1 pm)

1. 9:00 am. Ride the Safari Journey tram from the Toraja Terminal while the animals are active.

2. 10:15 am. Animal Educational Presentation at the Hanuman Stage.

3. 11:00 am. Tiger Educational Presentation at the Harimau Amphitheatre.

4. 11:35 am. Elephant Educational Presentation at Kampung Gajah, then feed the giraffes at Nkuchiro.

5. 12:30 pm. Early lunch, then leave at 1 pm and stop at Tegenungan Waterfall or Goa Gajah on the way back to Ubud.

Full day (9 am to 5:30 pm)

1. 9:00 am. Tram first, then the 10:15 am and 11 am presentations.

2. 11:35 am. Elephant presentation, then giraffe and meerkat feeding before the midday crowd.

3. 12:30 pm. Lunch at Tsavo Lion Restaurant, then the orangutans at Banyan Court.

4. 1:00 pm. Balinese market and the Ganesha elephant encounter, or Marine Safari Bali in the heat of the day.

5. 2:00 pm. Feed the Predator, then the 2:15 pm tiger presentation.

6. 3:00 pm. Bali Agung show (Tuesday to Sunday).

7. 4:00 pm. Water Play and the Fun Zone until 5 pm. Last tram at 5:15 pm if you want a second ride.

Bali Safari vs Bali Zoo

Pick Bali Safari for scale, the tram, the Night Safari and the aquarium. Pick Bali Zoo for a shorter, closer, walk-through visit with small children. Both are in Gianyar regency, but Bali Zoo in Singapadu is nearer Ubud and the south. Bali Zoo also ended its elephant rides in January 2026, as reported by World Animal News.

Is Bali Safari Park worth it? Tips for families

Yes, for families with children aged about 5 to 14 and anyone who wants big animals without a long walk. It is a full day with real conservation work behind it, and the tigers, lions and rhinos are seen well from the tram. It is less worth it for couples on a short trip who have been to a large safari park before, and for anyone looking for a wild-animal experience; this is a well-run zoo, not a reserve.

Three mistakes spoil most visits, and all are avoidable. Arriving at noon, when the cats are asleep. Picking the cheapest package and missing Bali Agung. Or coming on a Monday. Plan around the schedule and the day goes well.

• Carry mosquito repellent and sunscreen to protect yourself from the heat and the insects near the river habitats.

• Bring swimwear and a change of clothes for Water Play, and keep your belongings safe while the children swim.

• Strollers work on the main paths. Fold yours for the tram, and expect some uneven ground in the Fun Zone.

• Outside food is not allowed and bags are checked at the gate, so message the park on WhatsApp before you bring baby food or milk.

• Vegetarian travellers, including many from India, should ask the restaurant staff for meat-free dishes and say no fish sauce. Pack snacks for Jain diets, as choices are limited.

• From November to March, expect an afternoon shower. Use Marine Safari Bali and Bali Agung as your indoor hours.

• You do not need a guide. The keepers at each stage are better informed than any outside guide.

Bali Safari and Marine Park is the island's biggest animal day out, and it rewards a 9 am start, a package with Bali Agung and a Tuesday-to-Sunday visit. The elephant rides are gone, and the encounters that replaced them are the better experience.
