About Elephant Stables in Hampi
Hampi, a small town in Karnataka, is known for the archaeological ruins, which reflect an integral part of the Dravidian history. The temple complexes belong to the Vijayanagara Empire. The Elephant stables of Hampi are also an important attraction as these stables are one of those structures that have not suffered extensive damage. The Elephant Stables Hampi was used to provide shelter to the royal elephants of the Vijayanagara Empire.
The magnificent architecture indicates the importance of royal elephants in the empire and also the amazing craftsmanship of the artisans of that era. There are 11 domed chambers in the structure and the design of the central dome represents the architectural style found in the temples of Hampi, while the other 10 domes represent Islamic style of architecture. These Elephant Stables Vijayanagar can be accessed from the Zenana enclosure. There is also a free sound-and-light show here at 7pm, everyday.
Hampi Elephant Stables history and marvelous structure is a fine example of Indo-Islamic architecture which is different from other monuments of the place, and also it is one of the few monuments which has survived the massive attack of Mughals on Hampi, which led to the downfall of Vijayanagara empire.
The Elephant stables of Hampi should be definitely on the list of places to visit of every tourist visiting Hampi. The elephants would have been tied to the chains hanging from the centre of the ceiling as can be made out from the iron hooks embedded in some of the ceilings. These were not the stables for military elephants but for the ceremonial ones which were used by royal household.
