About Vijaya Vittala Temple in Hampi

One of the greatest temples in Hampi, the Vittala temple or the Vijaya Vittala Temple, located near the banks of the river Tungabhadra, represents an exceptional craftsmanship of Dravidian architecture.

The Vijaya temple in Hampi is one of the most popular attraction of this ruined town. Dating back to the 15th century, this temple was originally built under the rule of king Devaraya II and was enhanced by many who came after him giving the temple it's  present extravagant look.

Devoted to Vitthala, a form of Lord Vishnu, the Vittala Temple is built in the form of a sprawling area surrounded by high compound walls and towering gateways. Several attractions including the Maha Mantapa, the Stone Chariot and the musical pillars of the Ranga Mantapa make this ornate temple the most photographed monument in Hampi. The richly sculpted Stone Chariot is a shrine dedicated to Garuda, the carrier of Vishnu. The huge Ranga Mantapa is renowned for the 56 musical pillars or SAREGAMA pillars that produce musical notes when tapped gently is also a part of this temple. The Vittala Temple also houses the magnificent Maha Mantapa comprising of four smaller halls with various elegant statues, intricate carvings and tall pillars enhancing the beauty of this stunning temple in Hampi.
