Ningle Nallah, Gulmarg: How to Get There, Best Time and What to Do

Most people do it as a quiet afternoon away from the Gondola queues. You get a cold, loud, fast stream, grass flat enough to spread a picnic on, pine slopes on one side and snow on the ridgeline above you until well into June. About Ningle Nallah in Gulmarg

Several streams drain the high ground around Gulmarg. Ningle Nallah is the one people mean when they talk about a picnic by the water. In June and July both banks are covered in wildflowers.

The water starts as snow on Apharwat Peak. Alpather Lake, the frozen lake below Apharwat's twin summits, is the main reservoir, and Ningle Nallah is one of its outflows. It winds down through the hills and eventually joins the Jhelum.

Families come for the flat, open grass. Children get room to run that the Gulmarg bowl, busy with ponies and Gondola traffic, does not give them. It is also far quieter than the Gondola base or the golf course, which is why solo travellers and photographers make the trip.

Ningle or Ningli? Why the details online disagree

Both spellings are correct transliterations. Incredible India uses Ningli Nallah in its page titles, while most travel sites and local signs use Ningle. Nallah simply means stream.

You will also see distances from 5 km to 72 km quoted for the same place. The 10 km figure is measured from Gulmarg town and is the one the Ministry of Tourism uses. The 5 km figure belongs to Ferozepur Nallah, a different stream that some listicles merge with Ningle. Figures of 60 to 72 km are measured from Srinagar, not from Gulmarg. A couple of aggregator pages even describe the wrong place entirely (one confuses it with the Lidder river in Pahalgam), so treat any page that mentions rafting or birdwatching sanctuaries here with caution.

Where Is Ningle Nallah?

Ningle Nallah flows through the high meadows beyond the Gulmarg bowl, on the side of town that leads out towards Lienmarg, a camping meadow further up the same valley. Coming from Gulmarg, the stream falls on the way to Lienmarg. Once you cross the Ningle Nallah bridge, the track carries on up the valley to the Lienmarg meadow. Khilanmarg lies the other way, on the slopes above Gulmarg below Apharwat.

Almost every visitor bases themselves in Gulmarg and does Ningle Nallah as a half-day outing. If you are staying in Tangmarg, 13 km below Gulmarg, add about 30 minutes to every time on this page.

How to Reach Ningle Nallah

You reach Ningle Nallah from Gulmarg by local union taxi plus a short walk, by pony, or on foot along the 10 km track. A taxi from your hotel or the main Gulmarg taxi stand covers most of the distance.

A few practical points before you set off:

Outside taxis. Under local taxi-union rules, cabs from Srinagar usually drop you at your hotel or the main parking area and do not run local sightseeing inside Gulmarg. Plan on a local union taxi, a pony or walking for this leg.

Ponies. Experienced riders can hire a horse on their own; most visitors take one with a handler. The ride can be a little rough if you are not used to the jerks and jumps on a stony track. Pony rates are fixed per route by the Gulmarg Development Authority and should be displayed at the stand, so agree the route, the waiting time and the total before you mount, and pay at the end.

On foot. If you are fit and carrying a camera, walk. The track is easy to moderate, with no technical sections, and much of it runs through pine forest and open grassland.

Getting to Gulmarg first. Fly into Srinagar (SXR), then drive about 50 km, roughly 2 hours, via Tangmarg. The last 13 km from Tangmarg is the climb up to Gulmarg. Best Time to Visit Ningle Nallah

The best time to visit Ningle Nallah is May to October, when the track is open and the meadows are green. June and July bring the wildflowers. September and October have the clearest skies and the best light for photographs. In summer the stream runs free and the banks are dry enough to sit on for hours.

In winter the whole area goes under a thick cover of powdery snow. Photographs come out well at that time too, but you will not get close to the water. Picnic by the stream

The flat, grassy banks make this the classic family picnic stop in Gulmarg. Spread out well back from the edge, where the ground is dry. There are no stalls or tea shops at the stream, so bring everything, including water. If you bring a small gas stove for tea, keep it on rock, never on dry grass.

Camping overnight

The meadows around Ningle Nallah, and Lienmarg further up, are used for overnight camps in summer. Go with a licensed local operator or check with the Gulmarg Development Authority first, because parts of the Gulmarg uplands fall inside the Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary and camping rules can change. Nights are cold even in July, so pack a proper sleeping bag. Pitch at least 20 metres from the water, never light a fire on the meadow, and carry out every bit of waste.

Trout angling with a permit

Trout is present in the streams and nallahs of the Kashmir valley, and Ningle Nallah is a cold, clear trout water. Angling here is strictly permit-only. The J&K Department of Fisheries opens the season from April to September, and in 2026 it opened on 2 April. Permits are booked online at fisheries.jk.gov.in, cost Rs 1,500 per day for local anglers and Rs 3,500 per day for foreign anglers, and are valid for one day only. In 2026 local anglers could book only for Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, while foreign anglers could book any day. The rules are tight. The bag limit is 6 fish, only artificial flies are allowed (no natural bait, dead or alive), and you may use one rod. Carry your permit with you, because department staff check it on the bank. The department lists Ferozpur, the Tangmarg stream, as the main named trout beat near Gulmarg, so ask which beat your permit covers when you book. Photography

Morning is the time to shoot. The low sun lights the water and the Apharwat ridge sits clean behind it before clouds build. Bring a small tripod for slow-shutter shots of the rapids, and a polariser to cut glare off the stream. Summer gives you wildflowers and pine green, and October gives you gold grass and sharp air.

Short walks to Lienmarg and Khilanmarg

To make your day more active, cross the bridge and take a short hike up the valley towards the Lienmarg meadow. Khilanmarg, with the view back over Gulmarg, is a separate walk up from town on the Apharwat side. Both work best with a local guide, since paths split often and the weather turns fast above 3,000 m.

Timings, Entry Fee and Time Needed

Ningle Nallah is free to visit and has no gate or fixed opening hours. Treat daylight, roughly 8 am to 5 pm, as the practical window. There is no lighting on the track and the weather changes quickly in the afternoon. The only things you pay for are the taxi, the pony, a guide or a fishing permit.

Plan half a day from Gulmarg by taxi, about 4 to 5 hours return by pony including time at the stream, or a full day if you walk both ways. The older idea that you can "see it in two hours" only works if a taxi drops you at the bridge and waits.

Ningle Nallah vs Ferozepur Nallah vs Alpather Lake

These three get mixed up more than any other sights in Gulmarg, partly because the same water connects them. Alpather Lake is high up near the source, Ningle Nallah is one of the streams it feeds, and Ferozepur Nallah is a separate stream closer to town.

If you only have one free afternoon and want an easy outing, choose Ferozepur Nallah. If you want open space and fewer people, Ningle Nallah is the one. If you are fit and it is high summer, pair the Gulmarg Gondola to Phase 2 with the Alpather Lake trek on a separate day.

A Half-Day Plan From Gulmarg

This is the plan our Kashmir desk suggests for a summer day, using a taxi for the stream and leaving the afternoon for town sights.

8:00 am. Leave Gulmarg by union taxi or pony, with water and a packed lunch.

8:45 am. Reach the bridge and walk along the bank for the best morning light.

10:00 am. Picnic on the meadow, or walk 30 to 45 minutes up the valley towards Lienmarg.

12:30 pm. Head back before the afternoon clouds build.

2:00 pm. Lunch in town, then walk across to St Mary's Church and the edge of the Gulmarg Golf Course.

Evening. Tea and shopping in Gulmarg market.

Tips for Ningle Nallah: Safety and What to Carry

Nothing is sold at Ningle Nallah, so bring your own snacks and water. The rest of the list is about the water and the weather.

Respect the water. It is snowmelt, ice-cold and faster than it looks, especially in May and June. Do not wade above the knee, and keep children well back from the edge.

Wear grip. The rocks on the bank are wet and mossy. Trekking shoes or waterproof boots beat sneakers.

Start early. Clouds and rain often build in the afternoon, and there is no shelter at the stream.

Pack layers. Even on a warm June day it feels noticeably colder by the water and in the shade of the pines.

Settle prices first. Agree pony and taxi rates against the official rate card before you set off, including waiting time.

Carry ID. Keep an original photo ID on you and stay on marked tourist routes. Baramulla is a border district and ID checks on the Tangmarg road are routine.

Do not count on signal. Tell your hotel where you are going and when you expect to be back.

Leave no trace. Do not use soap in the stream, which feeds villages downstream, and carry out all wrappers and bottles.

What to carry: water, packed lunch, a warm layer, a rain shell, sunscreen, a power bank, cash for the pony or taxi, a bag for your rubbish, and your fishing permit if you plan to fish.
