At present, one can see only the ruins of Vasai Fort, the elegance and refinement were lost long ago.

The ruins of the fort have become a backdrop for selfies and its citadel is used by kids to play. Though the fort comes under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India but not much has been done to save or revive the monument. The fort has a rich history and is a place where the battles between Portuguese, Marathas, and Britishers were fought.

Vasai Fort History

In the year 1534, Vasai Fort came under the custody of Portuguese after the defeat of Sultan Bahadur Shah. The fort served as a military base and a base for commercial activities for Portuguese. The place became really important and they made Vasai as their capital city. Portuguese constructed seven churches, hospitals, colleges, convents, and administrative centers in and around the Vasai Fort. The fort was also used by the Portuguese Governor as his official residence whenever he visited Vasai. The Fort stretched in an area of 110 acres and became one of the most strategic locations for Portugueses. Meanwhile, the Marathas kept trying to take possession of the Vasai Fort and finally, on 12th May 1739, Marathas won the battle against Portuguese and took the control of Fort Vasai.

Vasai Beach is a popular place to visit near the fort. The beach is termed as mini Goa and is visited by many tourists. The beach has amazing restaurants on the beachside and also the beautiful lounges. One can explore Jivdani Temple which is located on the Jivdani Hill. One can climb over a thousand stairs and reach the temple or can even take a ropeway ride to the top of the temple. The temple is dedicated to the Jivdani Mata. One more mesmerizing place near Vasai Fort is Tungareshwar Temple and Waterfall, the temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located on Tungareshwar Hills. After visiting the temple, one can explore Tungareshwar waterfalls that are amidst lush green mountains.
