History of Pune

Pune is derived from the word Punya meaning holy. The first existence of the city can be traced back to 768 and 758 AD from the copper plates found in the area. These plates were made during the rule of Rashtrakuta and during the same period stunning Pataleshwar rock-cut temple. Around the 9th century, Pune was under the rule of the Yadava Empire.
