About Temple of the Tooth in Kandy

The city of Kandi earned the title World Heritage Site because of the presence of a sacred tooth relic temple, Temple of the Tooth. As the name suggests, the temple houses Lord Buddha’s tooth which had been transferred all the way from Kalinga to Kandy. It is now stationed at this temple which holds 3 pujas a day to honor and venerate Lord Buddha. However, nobody for the past so many years has actually seen the relic. This is exactly what draws so many people to this temple every year. The endless wondering that is followed by a person’s visit to the temple is not only thought-provoking but also leads them to so many conclusions. It is a mystery whether the temple really has the tooth or was it lost in the midst of the temple’s colorful history. This is something you will have to decide after taking a tour of the Temple of the Tooth, for yourself.

History of Temple of the Tooth

The temple was originally built by the kings of the Kandy during the 1700s to keep the relic of Lord Buddha safely. Down the years, the temple suffered multiple attacks from various colonizers and was caught in the midst of a few political struggle movements. The journey of the tooth started from Kalinga but was given to Princess Hemamali during the onset of war. The princess successfully smuggled the relic into the island but the tooth got passed on from one king to another. It was later decided that the monarch was in charge of keeping the tooth safe. This resulted in the tooth playing an important role on who should be the king. Whoever had the tooth, ended up being crowned the king. The Temple of Tooth, Kandy was later constructed to bring an end to all this mayhem and the relic was placed in a casket with many layers.

Attractions of Temple of the Tooth

Royal Palace of Kandy

The royal palace of Kandy was home to the monarchy line of the Kandian kings. It was modified many times by the different kings inhabiting it. King Vickrama Rajasinha was the last king who had to leave the palace after the city was captured by the British. Tourists can tour around the massive place and get to know the history behind every room and structure built and modified. The palace has the Kings’ royal audience hall, harem quarters and Queens’ bathing pavilion that are waiting to be explored even more and have so many interesting stories to tell.

Kandy Lake

The artificial lake was created by King Vickrama Rajasinha for the purpose of making Tooth relic Temple visually more appealing and pleasing to the eyes. The scenic beauty of the lake provides for a good resting place for tourists. If you are not tired, the shady areas around the lake, allow for a long walk and fast-paced jogging. Tourists can also take part in boating expeditions on the lake.

Temple of the Tooth Museum

The Temple of the Tooth relic is accompanied by a museum on the first and second floors. You can view the history of various Kandian kings along with their portraits and busts on the first floor. The second floor is a plethora of historical artifacts and religious items. The museum gives information regarding various aspects of history related to the Kandy city.

We were not informed about the payment procedure prior to our arrival. We were ask to pay 675 dollars in cash when we landed in Sri Lanka. There was no information given stating that the payment had to be made directly to the agent on arrival in cash as the first transaction of Rs. 75 dollars was done online. I do not think any tourist will be carrying 675 dollars in cash when they come for a vacation. The Queen's Berry hotel in Nurawa rayalia was not up to the mark at all. The website pictures shown is deceiving to that what was in reality. The food in the hotel was extremely poor. The hotel in Ella showed pictures of a swimming pool. When we went for swimming it was told to us only selected rooms could avail the swimming pool facility. Facts like these should be made clear before it self. The driver and the car providered was very good. Mr. Sashira the driver ensure that we had a pleasant time in Sri Lanka and made there all our journey from one place to another was a comfortable one. He was extremely friendly and helpful. The Cinnamon Bay hotel was one of the best experiences we had over there the hotel standard, quality, food and staff made the stay very enjoyable.

Our driver was great, but we were frustrated because we thought the tour included a driver who was also an English speaking guide. Our driver's English was not fluent enough for him to do more than point out a few things. Hotels were okay, but Bentota hotel had severe mold problem. Planned tour of Colombo was awful. Luckily I did my own research because many of the planned destinations were closed or in disrepair. SIM cards were a total scam. We were given "2 free sims" that were free anyway and then forced to pay for those plans rather than shop competitively for reasonable deals. Water given was insufficient for 4 people- we had to buy our own to supplement. If I did this trip over again I would just hire a driver and find our own hotels and meals and found my own attractions because there was really no value to this tour above the good driver. We loved the river safari in Bentota and botanical garden near Kandy.

Food was good for most of the days, except Kamili beach resort. Candle light dinner at Ella Flower Garden was well arranged. Guide was friendly and trustworthy. Above all, Darren, was prompt and easily approachable. Candle light dinner at Ella Flower Garden

Everything was really good. Our tour guide was really helpful. Except for the stay in lake view comfort bungalow it lacked security. We were robbed of 1,69,000 in the middle of the night from our room. Cos of this we had to go file a complaint in the police station. And one day of the trip was lost.and our guide and travel agent were very helpful in solving this out.

Dhanuka is a great travel agent and did everything possible to make our trip enjoyable. Constantly followed-up to assure my trip is confirmed and checked once during the trip. The hotels that Dhanuka selected for us were just the best fit for our expectations. Only regret is that we should have spent two days each at the Trico Blu and Amethyst Resort (Batticaloa) to enjoy the beach and the amenities surrounding the hotel. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the Abhijeet Bais (Trip guide), and the driver. On the day of submitting the deposit, Abhijeet insisted that I have to send a copy of payment confirmation immediately to proceed with the booking. He would not even listen to my urgency that I was rushing to get to the airport at the time he called me. I have traveled around the world and made credit card payments; never before been asked to produce my payment confirmation, which should have been automatically received by the booking agent - Abhijeet lacked patience, understanding of client's circumstances, and lacked professionalism!! I had to tell Abhijeet to cancel my reservation to get him off the phone. Later I received a text stating that the payment has been confirmed. With Dhanuka doing a wonderful job, I do not see the need for Abhijeet. The driver and the vehicle were a let-down. The driver was warm and somewhat friendly on the first day. Subsequent days, he was not so friendly and at times rood to my sister and brother-in-law. He portrayed self interest rather than the interest of the passengers. I am not an auto mechanic, but in my opinion the back suspensions of the vehicle were in poor condition. On the first day of the trip my wife and I sat in the back seat and were thrown around at every bump on the road. It was NOT the same when we sat in the front seats on subsequent days. If not for Abhijeet, the driver, and the vehicle I would have rated this trip EXCELLENT.

Visit to certain locations was to be complementary, for example the turtle hatchery. Our Guide told us that we have to pay SLR 1500/. Therefore, we skipped it. The Hotels were to be of 3 to 4 Star ratings. We found them to be 2 to 3 Star. The worst was at Nuwara Eliya. Overall, the holiday was pleasant.
