Timings and pick-up slots

Flight of the Gibbon runs several departures a day, and you choose a pick-up slot when you book rather than turning up on spec. Vans collect from Chiang Mai hotels at about 06:30, 08:00, 09:00 and 12:30. Chase the earliest slot you can: the forest is cool and quiet, the light through the canopy is at its best, and you finish before the afternoon heat builds. How to reach Flight of the Gibbon from Chiang Mai

The course sits above Mae Kampong village in the hills east of Chiang Mai, about an hour by road. Almost everyone gets there on the operator's own transfer, which is why it is built into the ticket: an air-conditioned van picks you up from your hotel and drops you back, so you never have to navigate the mountain roads yourself. Safety, eligibility and what to wear

Flight of the Gibbon is an ACCT-certified course, which is the international safety standard for zipline and canopy operations, and you ride clipped to a continuous safety line with two trained guides per group who handle every clip and check. As with any adventure activity, the safety comes from following instructions and letting the guides manage the equipment, so pay attention at the briefing and never rig your own harness.

Before you book, check you meet the basic requirements:

• Height: a minimum of about 1 m; smaller children ride tandem with a guide.

• Weight: a maximum of around 125 kg.

• Health: not suitable during pregnancy, or with recent injuries, back trouble or heart conditions.

• Group size: groups are kept small, usually up to nine people.

Wear closed shoes with grip, comfortable shorts or trousers you can move in, and a light layer, since the forest runs cooler than the city. The gibbon conservation story

The name is not just branding. Flight of the Gibbon was set up alongside a conservation project to return rescued and captive gibbons to protected forest, and part of every ticket goes toward that work. Set out early enough and you may hear the whooping call of wild gibbons carry across the canopy, which is rather the point: the course was routed through mature forest so that the trees, and the animals living in them, stay standing. Only the wettest afternoons pause the lines briefly for lightning, so an early slot is the safe bet in the wet months.

Is it worth it? For most first-time visitors to Chiang Mai, yes. It is not the cheapest half-day out, but the length of the course, the honest conservation angle and those near-800-metre flights put it a clear step above the shorter city courses.
