1. Thirunakkara Sri Krishna Temple

What’s Special: Significance of the temple’s pond

Timings: 5 am to 11:30 pm and 5 pm to 8 pm

As the name suggests, the temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and is located in Thirunakkara. The other deities worshipped in the temple are Goddess Bhagvati and Lord Ganesha, who have separate shrines. Gokulashtami, also known as Sri Krishna Janmashtami and Vinayaka Chaturthi, are two of the main festivals celebrated in the temple with great zeal. The temple has such religious significance that pilgrims who visit Sabarimala take a holy dip in this temple’s pond. 2. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Spread over an area of 14 acres on the southern bank of the Meenachil River, Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, also known as Vembanad Bird Sanctuary, is an ideal place to visit for Kottayam sightseeing tours. The sanctuary, nestled on Vembanad Lake, is mostly visited by birdwatchers, photographers and nature lovers. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Thirunakkara Mahadeva Temple is one of the oldest temples in Kottayam. Built in the 16th century by King Thekkumkoor, the temple exhibits typical Kerala-style architecture with paintings of epic characters from different Hindu epics. Apart from Lord Shiva, the temple houses shrines of Lord Ganesha, Goddess Durga and Lord Subhramaniya. There is a Koothambalam or temple theatre in the temple complex where various art and cultural performances are conducted from time to time. 4. Bay Island Driftwood Museum

Bay Island Driftwood Museum has gained a place in the Limca Book of Records for being one of a kind in the country, boosting Kottayam tourism. The museum exhibits driftwood pieces carved into myriad shapes, prepared through innovative modern art. The process involves scraping, polishing and shaping the wood pieces, most of which have been washed away by cyclones in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. Few pieces resemble amphibians, fishes, reptiles and birds, while some resemble soldiers, national leaders and Jesus. Apart from the importance of preserving these pieces, the museum aims on educating the visitors about the island’s rich history and the cultural significance of driftwood habitat.

5. Thangal Hill

What’s Special: Mausoleum of Sheikh Fariduddin

Thangal Hill or Thangal Para, is a sacred pilgrimage site for Muslims as the mausoleum of Sheikh Fariduddin lies at the top of these hills. It is believed that the stone boulder present there is the one where the Sheikh used to grind his paan. The place of spirituality is visited during the festival of Urs to pay homage to the Sheikh. The place gets lit up with clay diyas along with buntings and ribbons. Apart from being a religious site, the hill offers breathtaking and lush green views of the valley below.
