Best treks in Thailand, region by region

Almost every Thailand trek starts in the north. The hills around Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai hold the classic multi-day routes with village homestays, while the far south adds one standout: the rainforest and lake of Khao Sok. Here is what each base gives you, and who it suits.

Chiang Mai (jungle trek + hill-tribe homestay)

Chiang Mai is the launch pad for most trekkers. The Mae Taeng and Chiang Dao valleys north of the city are the busiest trekking country, with trails that climb through bamboo forest to Karen and Lahu villages where you stay the night. A typical 2 or 3 day trip pairs the walk with a bamboo raft down a river and a stop at a waterfall, and many operators bundle a half-day elephant sanctuary visit near Mae Wang as an add-on. This is the best all-round base for a first jungle trek.

Chiang Rai (short hill-tribe treks, 2D1N and 3D2N)

Two hours north of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai runs quieter hill-tribe treks to Akha, Lahu and Hmong villages, usually as a 2 day 1 night or 3 day 2 night loop. Groups are smaller and the walking is gentler, so it works well if you want the homestay night without a hard climb.

Doi Inthanon (Thailand's highest peak, day trek)

Doi Inthanon is the tallest mountain in the country, about 90 minutes from Chiang Mai. It is a day-trek destination rather than an overnight one: cloud-forest nature trails, the twin royal pagodas, and the Wachirathan and Mae Ya waterfalls. Good for trekkers short on time or travelling with older parents.

Pai, Mae Sariang, Soppong and Umphang (off-beat north)

Pai sits in a valley of rivers, hot springs and canyons, an easy add-on to a Chiang Mai trek. Mae Sariang, further west, is the gentlest of the northern bases and the one most operators recommend for a first-timer or an easy grade. Soppong is cave-and-trek country, with paddy fields and forest trails for people who want something off the usual circuit. Umphang, near the Myanmar border, is the route to Thi Lo Su, the highest waterfall in Thailand, and its treks run November to February when the monsoon has cleared.

Khao Sok (jungle and lake, the south)

If you are already heading to the southern beaches, Khao Sok National Park is the one trek worth the detour. Its rainforest is older than the Amazon, and the usual trip is a 2 or 3 day jungle safari built around Cheow Lan Lake, staying in floating raft-house lodges, with a jungle trek and a canoe paddle between limestone cliffs. It is the wildest-feeling trek on this page.

Best time to trek in Thailand

Trek in the cool, dry season from November to February. Days are warm but the humidity drops, the trails are firm rather than muddy, and river levels are safe for rafting. January is the peak month, so book homestays early if you travel then. March to May gets very hot and hazy from farm burning in the north, and June to October is the monsoon, when jungle trails turn slippery and some Umphang and Khao Sok routes close. If you can only travel in the rains, stick to short, guided day treks rather than multi-day routes.

Difficulty grades, what's included and what to pack

How hard are the treks?

Most northern hill-tribe treks are graded easy to moderate: 3 to 5 hours of walking a day on forest paths with some steep, muddy sections, well within reach of anyone reasonably fit. Mae Sariang and the shorter Chiang Rai loops are the gentlest and the usual pick for first-timers and families with older children. Doi Inthanon day trails are the easiest of all. Umphang and longer Khao Sok safaris are the most demanding, with longer days and rougher ground.

What a trekking package usually includes

• A head torch, a power bank and a dry bag (village electricity can be limited)

• Cash in Thai baht for tips and small village purchases; card use is rare on the trail
