Water Puppet Show in Hanoi: Thang Long Tickets, Show Times and Tips

That is the whole plan for most travellers. Buy the ticket in the morning, walk around the lake at sunset, and be at the door 15 minutes before the lights go down.

The details below were cross-checked on 4 November 2026 against the theatre's official page and four timetables published between May and October 2026. What is the Hanoi water puppet show?

Water puppetry (mua roi nuoc) is a folk theatre from the Red River Delta in northern Vietnam, and it dates back to at least the 11th century. When the monsoon flooded the rice fields, villagers turned the water into a stage. The oldest written record is a stone stele dated 1121 at Long Doi Son Pagoda, about 60 km south of Hanoi, which describes a water puppet show staged for King Ly Nhan Tong.

The trick is that the puppeteers are in the water too. They stand waist-deep behind a split-bamboo screen and steer wooden, lacquered puppets on long bamboo rods hidden below the surface. From your seat the puppets seem to skate, dive and spin on the water on their own. Some of them spit fire.

The Thang Long troupe was founded in October 1969 and is now based at 57B Dinh Tien Hoang. Its stage is a pool in front of a red pagoda-roofed facade, with a 300-seat hall sloping down towards it. The Asia Book of Records has listed it as the only theatre in Asia performing water puppets 365 days a year. That daily schedule is why it is the one every guidebook sends you to.

Beside the stage sits a live band. Expect the dan bau (a one-string zither that bends notes like a voice), bamboo flutes, drums, gongs and wooden clappers, with singers in the cheo folk-opera style giving the characters their voices. The music carries the story, so the Vietnamese narration matters less than you would think.

The programme is a string of about 15 to 17 short scenes, each two to four minutes long. The theatre says its pieces were chosen from more than 400 village plays. Chu Teu, a cheeky pot-bellied jester, opens the show and comments on everything. After him come dragons and phoenixes, a buffalo boy playing his flute, farmers ploughing and planting rice, a scholar returning home in triumph after the royal exams, and children splashing in the river. Then comes Le Loi's boat, the legend of the king who returned a magic sword to the golden turtle of Hoan Kiem Lake, which is the lake right outside. A boat race, a unicorn dance and a fairy dance follow, and the Four Sacred Animals close the night (dragon, unicorn, turtle and phoenix).

These are the stories of rural life and of legends that grandparents tell their grandchildren. You don't need to know them. A fox stealing a duck gets the same laugh in every language.

Water puppet show timings in Hanoi

The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre runs five to seven shows a day, from mid-afternoon to the 8 pm show (a 9:15 pm show is added on some busy nights), with extra morning shows on Sunday. The hard part is that published timetables differ. Here is what every recent source agrees on, and what you should check on the day.

Cross-checked 4 November 2026 against four timetables dated May to October 2026. The theatre does not print times on its website, so confirm on the day at the box office or on (+84) 024 3824 9494.

Older pages still circulate a 3:30 / 5:00 / 6:30 / 8:00 / 9:15 pm list and a "10 am to 8 pm" line. Neither matches the current slots, so ignore them.

Afternoon shows start about 70 minutes apart and the 6:30 and 8 pm shows 90 minutes apart, which leaves time to clear the hall between performances. Doors open roughly 15 minutes before each one. If you are late, staff will seat you between scenes, so you lose the opening, which is Teu's best bit.

Pick your slot by what you want around it. In winter the sun sets over the lake around 5:15 pm, so the 4:10 pm show lets you walk out at dusk. The 6:30 pm show suits an early dinner after. The 8:00 pm show is the one everybody wants, so it is the one that sells out.

During Tet (the Lunar New Year falls on 6 February 2027) the theatre often runs a reduced schedule for a few days and then adds shows once the holiday ends. Check directly that week.

Thang Long water puppet show ticket price and seats

A ticket to the Thang Long water puppet show costs 100,000 VND at the back, 150,000 VND in the middle and 200,000 VND in the front rows. Every seat sees the same show. Paying more gets you closer to the water and to the puppets' faces, and a little closer to the splashes.

Prices as listed for 2026, VAT included. Rupee figures at Rs 1 = 270 VND.

Our pick is Deluxe. From the middle rows you see every puppet clearly, you can still watch the band, and your clothes stay dry. Choose VIP if you have small children who need to be close to stay interested. Choose Standard if you are on a budget or just want the experience for the price of a bowl of pho and a coffee.

Three smaller costs catch people at the counter:

• Camera fee. 20,000 VND (Rs 75) to take photos, and 50,000 to 60,000 VND (Rs 185 to Rs 220) to film. You pay it at the box office and get a sticker. Flash is never allowed.

• Audio guide. The theatre's own page lists an audio guide in 7 languages, including English, that is not included in the ticket.

• Children. There is no printed child fare. A child who takes a seat pays the full price of that tier.

For a family of four in the middle rows, that is 600,000 VND (about Rs 2,220) for the evening, plus 20,000 VND if you want photos.

How to book water puppet show tickets

You can book water puppet show tickets in four ways: at the box office, by phone or email to the theatre, through a booking site, or through your hotel. All of them work. The question is only how far ahead you need to do it.

1. Box office. The counter is at the theatre's entrance on Dinh Tien Hoang and opens in the morning. This is the cheapest route, and you can see the seat map before you pay. Cash in dong is the safe bet.

2. Phone or email. Call (+84) 024 3824 9494 or write to marketingthanglongwpt@gmail.com (both printed on the official site, nhahatmuaroithanglong.vn). English on the phone is limited, and email replies can take a day, so email a few days ahead with your date, slot and number of seats.

3. Booking sites. Klook, GetYourGuide and Viator sell e-tickets. You pay by card in advance and your tier is fixed, but the price is the same or a little higher, and changing the slot is harder.

4. Your hotel desk. Most Old Quarter hotels will buy tickets for you, sometimes with a small mark-up. Useful if you land in the afternoon and want the same evening's show.

How far ahead depends on the month.

How to reach the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre

The theatre is at 57B Dinh Tien Hoang, on the north-east corner of Hoan Kiem Lake, where the lake meets the Old Quarter. If you are staying in the Old Quarter, walk. It is 2 minutes from the red The Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple and 5 to 15 minutes from most hotels.

From Friday 7 pm to Sunday midnight, the roads around Hoan Kiem Lake close to traffic and become a walking street. Your Grab will drop you a few blocks away, so allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes on a weekend evening. During the week, Grab can stop at the door. Give the driver the address, 57B Dinh Tien Hoang.

Motorbike parking is on the side lanes off Dinh Tien Hoang for about 10,000 to 20,000 VND. Car parking near the theatre is scarce.

Which water puppet show is best in Hanoi?

For a first visit, the Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre is the best water puppet show in Hanoi. It plays every day, it sits beside the lake you will visit anyway, and it has the most performances to choose from. The other venues are worth knowing if Thang Long is sold out, or if you want to see where the art began.

Thay Pagoda is the one most guides skip. Its small water pavilion, standing in the pagoda's pond, is one of the oldest water-puppet stages still in Vietnam. Villagers perform there during the pagoda festival on the 5th to 7th days of the third lunar month, which makes it the closest thing to how the show looked before theatres existed. Outside the festival it is a half-day trip to a beautiful pagoda, and you won't see puppets on the water.

All four venues tell the same kind of stories (village life, legends and the sacred animals), so the core performance is similar. What changes is the size of the stage, the band and how polished the show is. Thang Long's is the most polished.

Is the water puppet show worth it?

Yes, for most first-time visitors to Hanoi. It costs less than Rs 750 even in the front row, it takes under an hour, it is 5 minutes from where you are staying, and you can't see this art form anywhere else on a daily basis. It is not a big-budget production, and if you go in expecting one you will be disappointed.

For Indian families the answer is an easy yes. It is a vegetarian-safe, alcohol-free evening that grandparents, parents and children all follow without a shared language, and at Rs 370 to Rs 740 a seat it costs about the same as a cinema ticket at home. Senior travellers should know the hall is raked, with stepped rows set close together, so ask for a seat near the end of an aisle when you book.

Tips for watching the water puppet show

Arrive 20 to 30 minutes before your show. The queue forms outside the entrance on Dinh Tien Hoang, doors open about 15 minutes before the start, and you still need time for the camera sticker and the restroom.

• Ask for the centre. Whatever tier you buy, ask the counter for the centre block. Side seats in the back rows lose part of the stage to the screen.

• In VIP, protect your phone. The dragon and boat-race scenes throw water. There are no ponchos. A dupatta or light jacket over your lap is enough.

• Pay the camera fee before you shoot. Staff check for the sticker. Turn off the flash, which distracts the puppeteers and is banned.

• Carry less. The rows are tight and there is little room for bags at your feet. Leave big bags at the hotel.

• Eat before or after, not during. Food isn't allowed in the hall. Water is fine.

• Bring a layer in summer. The hall is air-conditioned, but it still feels humid when all 300 seats are full.

• Stay for the end. After the Four Sacred Animals, the screen rolls up and the puppeteers wade out to bow. It is the only moment you see them, and the best photo of the night.

• Use the restroom first. There is no interval.

For vegetarian and Jain travellers, dinner is easy in this part of town. Ask for "chay" (vegetarian) at any stall, or head to one of the Indian kitchens near the Old Quarter listed in our Hanoi nightlife guide, several of which cook without onion and garlic on request.

What to do before or after the show

The theatre sits at the busiest corner of central Hanoi, so the show fits into an evening on foot.

• Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple. Cross the red The Huc Bridge to the temple on its island, 2 minutes from the theatre. Entry is 50,000 VND (Rs 185) and under-16s go free. You will have just watched the lake's sword legend on stage, so the Turtle Tower in the middle of the lake means more.

• The Old Quarter. Hang Bac, Ma May and Hang Be begin across the road. Egg coffee at Cafe Giang, 39 Nguyen Huu Huan, is a 5-minute walk and costs 30,000 to 50,000 VND (Rs 110 to Rs 185).

• Weekend night market. From Friday to Sunday evenings, stalls line Hang Dao from the lake north towards Dong Xuan Market, 5 minutes from the theatre door.

• Lotte Observation Deck. If you want the city from above, the 65th-floor deck at Lotte Center costs 230,000 VND on weekdays. Go for sunset and take the 8 pm puppet show after.

A simple evening for a first-timer is egg coffee at 4 pm, the lake loop at sunset, the 6:30 pm show, then dinner in the Old Quarter.

The Thang Long water puppet show is the easiest cultural evening in Hanoi: 50 minutes, under Rs 750, and a short walk from your hotel.
