About Dong Xuan Market in Hanoi
Dong Xuan Market is the largest roofed indoor market in Hanoi and also the busiest one by far. Within a stone-throwing distance of Hoan Kiem Lake in the old quarter of Hanoi, this French-era marketplace is the hub for cheap wholesale trade in Hanoi. Established in 1889 by combining two previously existing markets, Dong Xuan is one of the principal new architectures of the French rule. The tell-tale feature of the market was its grand entrance divided into five arches corresponding to the five domes of the marketplace.
In the first Indo-China War in 1947, Dong Xuan Market saw a fierce conflict between the French and Viet forces. A memorial stands in remembrance of the event near the main gate of the market. Later in 1974, a devastating fire destroyed most of its construction but it was built back to its original architecture, and usual functioning was restored.
True to the market-styles of Vietnam, the ground floor of Dong Xuan Market Hanoi is kept for groceries and wet market. Locals visit here every day to do their daily shopping of fruits, vegetables, meat and seafood. Towards the back end, there is a bustling pet shop. Tourists do not have much to see here. But the three floors above that are lined up with several shops selling apparels, handbags, watches, sunglasses, stationeries, beauty products, jewellery, traditional Dong Ho drawings, Bat Trang ceramics, Binh Da embroideries, sand paintings and what not. Dong Xuan Market has a dining space as well, serving authentic dishes like Vietnamese coffee, Banh Cuon (rolled cake) and Bun Cha (noodles and grilled pork).
The regular market gets over by evening, and the night market takes over after that. It has been in place since 2003 and mainly caters to tourists. Other than shopping souvenirs, they can enjoy the extensive range of local cuisine and enjoy the cultural activities like live Vietnamese music and instruments. The weekend night market is even better when the street is made pedestrian-only and more stalls are there to pick and choose from at low prices.
