About Solang Valley (Solang Nullah)

Solang Valley is a side valley near the top of the Kullu Valley, strung along the Beas as it runs down from the high peaks. The name comes from Solang village, and Nullah simply means a mountain stream, so Solang Nullah is the stream-fed meadow that gives the valley its shape. It lies on the road from Manali towards the Atal Tunnel and Rohtang, which is why almost every Manali itinerary passes through it.

The valley earns its Snow Valley nickname honestly. From roughly November the higher slopes start to whiten, and by January the meadow is a working snow field with ski runs, sled tracks and snow-play zones. Come summer the same slopes turn green and the crowd swaps skis for paragliding harnesses, zorbing balls and quad bikes.

Solang also sits at the mouth of some serious mountain country. The trail to Beas Kund, the glacial lake that feeds the Beas, starts just beyond the valley at Dhundi, and the peaks of Hanuman Tibba and Shitidhar rise close behind, which is what gives the meadow its dramatic backdrop.

Best Time to Visit Solang Valley

The best time to visit Solang Valley depends entirely on what you want to do there, because it is really two destinations in one. Winter is for snow and skiing, summer is for paragliding and adventure sports, and the monsoon is best avoided.

If you specifically want to see snowfall, aim for January or early February, the coldest and most reliably white stretch of the year. For adventure sports at their best, April to June brings stable weather, full paragliding operations and the whole summer line-up running at once.

Things to Do in Solang Valley

Solang packs more paid activity into one meadow than anywhere else around Manali, and the line-up changes with the season. Here is what you can actually do, and when.

Skiing and snowboarding (winter). From roughly December to February the meadow slopes turn into beginner-friendly ski runs, with instructors and rental gear on the spot. This is the main reason snow-seekers come, and no experience is needed for a first lesson.

Paragliding (summer). The signature Solang activity. Tandem flights launch off the ridge above the valley, with short joy rides and longer high-altitude flights on offer between March and June. A trained pilot handles everything. You just run a few steps and lift off.

Ropeway and gondola. The Solang ropeway carries you up the slope for the big glacier-and-meadow view, and it runs in both seasons. In winter it drops you at the snow line, and in summer it is the easy way to a high viewpoint without the climb.

Zorbing. Rolling down the grassy incline strapped inside a giant transparent ball is a summer favourite, especially with families and first-timers. Each roll takes a couple of minutes and needs no skill at all.

ATV and quad biking. Short guided stretches on all-terrain quad bikes run across the flatter parts of the meadow in the dry months, popular with teens and anyone who wants a quick adrenaline hit off the snow.

Snow play and cable car. In peak winter, sledging, snow scooters and short cable-car or chairlift hops let families enjoy the snow without committing to a full ski lesson.

Solang Valley Ropeway, Tickets & Activity Costs

Solang Valley itself has no entry ticket. You pay per activity once you are there, and prices move with the season, the operator and how much you negotiate. Use the ranges below as a planning guide, then confirm the exact rate at the counter.

How to Reach Solang Valley

Solang Valley is about 14 km from Manali on the road towards Rohtang, and the drive takes 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic and snow. Here is how to get there.

By road from Manali

A taxi or self-drive up the Manali to Rohtang road, through Palchan and Kothi, is the standard way in. Shared cabs and local buses also run in season, and the last stretch can be slow when winter snow or day-trip traffic builds up, so an early start helps.

Nearest airport and railway

The closest airport is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali), about 50 km short of Manali and roughly 65 km from Solang, with limited flights. The nearest narrow-gauge railhead is Joginder Nagar (~145 km), while the nearest broad-gauge railway station is Chandigarh (~285 km), from where most travellers drive or take a bus up to Manali and on to Solang.

Places to Visit Near Solang Valley

Solang sits at the start of the high road out of Manali, so several of the region's best-known spots are a short drive away. Pair one or two with your Solang day for a fuller trip.

Atal Tunnel. The 9.02 km tunnel under the Rohtang ridge, opened in 2020, begins a short drive beyond Solang and has become a sight in its own right, cutting the run to Lahaul to minutes.

Rohtang Pass. The classic snow pass at about 3,980 m, further up the same road. It needs a permit and is open only in the warmer months, so plan ahead if you want to combine it with Solang.

Beas Kund. The glacial lake that feeds the Beas, reached on a two to three day trek from Dhundi just past Solang. One of the most popular short Himalayan treks from Manali.

Anjani Mahadev. A temple and seasonal waterfall a short, steep walk up from the Solang side, which freezes into an ice formation in deep winter.

Old Manali and Hadimba Temple. Back towards town, the cedar-shaded Hadimba temple and the cafes of Old Manali round out a Solang day-trip for those not chasing more altitude.
