Rohtang Pass, Manali (Himachal Pradesh)

Situated at a height of nearly 4,000 meters above sea level, Rohtang Pass is a beautiful and very popular mountain pass ensconced in the Himalayas. Located in the state of Himachal Pradesh, Rohtang Pass is nearly 51 km away from the hill station of Manali. It connects the Kullu Valley and Lahaul Valley. From the top of Rohtang Pass, one can see the Kullu Valley as well as the Lahaul and Spiti Valley. Thousands of travelers cross this high-altitude pass in Himachal via Manali-Leh Highway to reach Ladakh and Spiti Valley. The best time to visit Rohtang Pass is from late May through early November. During these months, the Rohtang Pass is open for traffic via Leh-Manali Highway. The Rohtang Pass snowpoint is a popular spot for honeymooners and families alike. Couples and kids can rent skiwear to enjoy sledding and skiing here.

Information Related to Rohtang Pass Permit

Carrying a Rohtang Pass permit is compulsory if visiting up to Rohtang Pass or beyond it. Permits are issued for two sorts of travel, one up to the Rohtang Pass and the other one is beyond Rohtang Pass. The permits can be booked online on the official website and the printout of the same can be taken out. Other than the permit cost of the vehicle, there is also a congestion fee that needs to be paid which is valid only for one day. Vehicles not having the proper permit and the congestion slip will not be able to go to Rohtang Pass or beyond that.

Rohtang Pass Activities

Mountain biking is the most popular activity to undertake at the Rohtang Pass. Biking on the lesser taken routes amidst the snow-capped mountains and the picturesque landscape is one of the best things to do at this heaven like place. Trekking is another thrilling adventure to undertake at the Rohtang Pass which is full of thrills. Trekking through the glaciers, high peaks, surreal lakes, and cold weather is one of the best experiences to have at Rohtang Pass. Taking a sledge ride is another fun-filled activity that can be done at the Rohtang Pass.

To maintain traffic and protect the environment, only 800 petrol and 400 diesel vehicles are allowed for one day to visit Rohtang Pass. Rohtang Pass permit charges for cars, trucks, and buses is INR 500, while there is no permit fee for bikes. However, all vehicles must have a permit to visit the mountain pass. There is also a congestion charge (for crossing Gulaba Bridge) of INR 50 for bikes & cars and INR 100 for buses & trucks.

The Rohtang Pass temperature in winter is below zero degree Celsius. The pass receives abundant snowfall each winter, from November to early March. The road to Leh passes through Rohtang Pass. Rohtang Pass in June is the busiest as bikers, honeymooners, solo adventurers, and families visit this scenic place in the summer season. To visit Rohtang Pass in October is a popular route for travelers from Lahaul and Spiti Valley. The weather of Rohtang Pass is unpredictable as there are frequent thunderstorms and blizzards during the monsoon season, especially in July and August.

Visit this place to enjoy pristine white snow till as far as the eyes can see and amazing views to die for. The roads leading up to Rohtang Pass is quite easy to navigate, although the regular occurrence of blizzards and snowstorms can sometimes prove to be the reason behind accidents.

    • Trip to Delhi

Manali, Delhi, Mathura, Agra & Jaipur. At Manali, 3N stay was totally disappointed due to waiting for driver (Om Prakash) for pickup from hotel for local sightseeing 3 to 4 hrs delay every day which impacted on our happiness, like that so many other nonsense experienced with driver due to non cooperation, etc...... In fact it was total loss for us & while return from Manali to Chandigarh on last day driver again started playing with us without proper cooperation. When we contact Mr. Naman from Travelloa holidays for the same. After so many discussions with driver, his mood changed. Finally we reached to Chandigarh. Hotel Monarch Residency at Manali was not wrathful, no proper maintenance. We felt happy by visiting Rohtangpass with our own. Except this everything in Manali trip was irritated us. Travelloa holidays excused for the same & trying to resolve by arranging compensation for the loss? Delhi, Mathura, Agra & Jaipur trip was awesome. We spent quality time & enjoyed trip due to proper guidance of driver ( Thankful to Mr. Pawan) & hotel stays. My understanding on travelloa holidays is they are good towards Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, may be other places....but definitely they don`t have right agents at Manali. Thanks to Travel triangle & travelloa holidays for memorable trip.

    • Trip to Spiti

I would like to share my experience of Spiti Tour with Holidays Icon. Here we come in touch with our tour coordinator Ms. Diksha Bragta, a polite , professional and talkative lady. She never ever fail to respond us during day one to last of our trip. She arranged Excellent rooms and transportation for us... Mukesh, a friendly Driver of Innova Crysta was introvert in nature but faithful to his duty.... Another person from Holiday Icon was Ashwini Verma, a well profit loss calculator. We hire them for 6 day and 5 night tour of Spiti including Chandratal camp. Everything was good and fine at the time of beginning and as per requirements of our planning. Our predecided route was via Rohtang Pass and Kunzum pass, but weather didn't allow us as Rohtang Route was closed ( so before plan the journey make sure Rohtang Route is open or not as BRO official declaration ). Now the complete itinerary was changed to the new longest route via Kalpa , Taboo, Kaza. But during journey we strongly feel that at least 7 or more days are required for Spiti Adventure Tour because less number of days automatically increases the time of travel on hilly roads. We started from Manali and finished it at Manali. Hotels review on Internets are enough to judge their services, Here we are also satisfied with them. On the tribal area of Himanchal there are less number of availability of Hotels so there are no more options to choose better one. The evening and night temperature was falling fast and extremely cold and day temperature was pleasantly good. One of our friend got mountain sickness ( breathing problem ) after altitude of Sangla. We have to rescheduled our plan and Journey near to Kalpa. So we return back to Manali again. During this phase The Holiday Icons rearranged Hotels for us in Manali and we have to pay additional for cancelled hotels in Spiti ( That was actually the total promised cost of Hotels in itinerary without taking their services ). Now the Spiti Tour was completely converted into Manali Trip with additional cost with cancellation of Spiti Hotels. We enjoyed the Manali Locals, Rohatang Pass, Solang Valley, mall roads etc. Now we regret to choose the less number of days for Spiti Tour.

We booked himachal trip of 5 days through travel magazine.I would not recommend booking through this agent because the last day driver was very rude and harsh it was really a bad experience to us.Lot of miscommunication and delay after payment of total amount.Hotel rooms were good but very far from main places and the hotel Lotus inn river view in manali does not have lift and they gave us room in 3rd floor. My hubby got leg operation done a year back and we felt it very difficult to claim the stairs everyday thrice(NO BUFFET in the hotel). We paid for Business class bus and he offered normal bus one way the bus journey in that bus was horrible.Agents know that the hotels does not allow early check in though they wont let us know.We paid extra 1000 per room in shimla for 3 hours early check in.

    • Trip to Manali

Hi, Myself and my wife were on a trip to Himachal ( shimla- Kulu manali- Dharamsala- Dalhousie) for 8 nights and 9 days. Let me give feed back on everything . We paid huge amount for this trip , but what we got is not as per our expectations. 1) Hotels : Hotels in shimla and dalhousie and dharamsala are far from towns. And in shimla literally it took hell lot of time travelling to hotel and city in the huge traffic we have there. Food in shimla and manali is not as good as we expected. But dharamsala hotel is nice in all aspects except the distance . And I am not sure how the selection of hotels from either Travel Triangle or travel agencies happen. 2) While paying money or on itenary you do not mention any details on hill view from rooms , but later we get normal rooms with no hill view. If we ask we get reply that itne pise me itne hoga. After spending 54k just for package I don't think any customer thinks on spending 3-4 k on hill view rooms. Being in a closed rooms does not make any sense after travelling that much distance. 3) And on the travel, most of the things on itenary need us to walk or go through horses and all for which we need to spend again, u should clearly mention that on the itenary that those cant be reached by car. 4)most of the travel is simply wasted on mornings for travelling between Delhi- Shimla 12 hrs, Shimla-Manali 9-12hrs, Manali- Dharamsala 9hrs, Dharamsala- Dalhousie 4-5 hrs, again Dalhousie-Delhi 11-12 hrs, so I cam see almost 4-5 days are completely wasted on travel. Rather you should come with a good plan of organizing the travels by night and arranging local sight seeing something differently. 5) Again on the local adventure activities I can see the local authorities demand huge money with out any proper rate . Travel agencies should have tie up with some of the adventure activities organization's and provide coupons for us for normal price. We didn't perform any adventure stuff due to the huge price they demand. 6) About Driver: He is very nice, professional, humble, good and experienced on hill side driving. 1) Manali Rohtang pass , ofcourse again need to spend huge money from my pocket as there is no proper plan from travel agencies. 2) Natural beauty of Shimla and Manali .

The trip was great. Sky high Manali agents were always available on call an helped us sort any issues during the trip. Due to bad weather we had to miss our trek on the first day of our trip, the agents were kind enough to plan and adjust the trek on the last day of the trip when the weather was stable even though it wasn't initially planned . The service provided by the hotel and the camp were also great.
