About Rohtang Pass in Manali

It connects the Kullu Valley and Lahaul Valley. From the top of Rohtang Pass, one can see the Kullu Valley as well as the Lahaul and Spiti Valley. Thousands of travelers cross this high-altitude pass in Himachal via Manali-Leh Highway to reach Ladakh and Spiti Valley. The best time to visit Rohtang Pass is from late May through early November. During these months, the Rohtang Pass is open for traffic via Leh-Manali Highway. The Rohtang Pass snow point is a popular spot for honeymooners and families alike. Couples and kids can rent skiwear to enjoy sledding and skiing here.
About Rohtang Pass Permit
Carrying a Rohtang Pass permit is compulsory if visiting up to Rohtang Pass or beyond it. Permits are issued for two sorts of travel, one up to the Rohtang Pass and the other one is beyond Rohtang Pass. The permits can be booked online on the official website and the printout of the same can be taken out. Other than the permit cost of the vehicle, there is also a congestion fee that needs to be paid which is valid only for one day. Vehicles not having the proper permit and the congestion slip will not be able to go to Rohtang Pass or beyond that. Permit to Rohtang Pass can be issued on the spot from any sub-divisional magistrate office in Manali, however, it is recommended to take the permit one day prior to the visit.

There is also a congestion charge (for crossing Gulaba Bridge) of INR 50 for bikes & cars and INR 100 for buses & trucks.
Things to Carry
One should carry things like woolen clothes, stole, cap, gloves in order to keep the body warm. Carrying water bottles and food is important as you won’t find any restaurant or stall in Rohtang Pass or on the way. Just make sure to bring back the empty bottles and packets and do not leave that at the pass otherwise heavy fine can be levied. Rohtang Pass permit and valid ID proof is a must before going to Rohtang Pass.
Best Time to Visit Rohtang Pass
The Rohtang Pass temperature in winter is below zero degree Celsius. The pass receives abundant snowfall each winter, from November to early March. The road to Leh passes through Rohtang Pass. Rohtang Pass in June is the busiest as bikers, honeymooners, solo adventurers, and families visit this scenic place in the summer season. To visit Rohtang Pass in October is a popular route for travelers from Lahaul and Spiti Valley. The weather of Rohtang Pass is unpredictable as there are frequent thunderstorms and blizzards during the monsoon season, especially in July and August.
