About The Ridge, Shimla

The Ridge is a large, level open space, and it works as the town square of Shimla. Locals and travellers drift through it every evening to eat, shop and watch the light change over the hills. Along its edges you will find everything from small local grocers to international brand stores, plus a string of cafes, bakeries and a few pubs where you can sit out an afternoon after a long day on your feet.

When Shimla was the summer capital of British India, the Ridge served as the main marketplace. That civic role never really left. It is still where fairs, concerts and public celebrations happen, and four statues stand along it: Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Dr Y.S. Parmar (the first chief minister of Himachal Pradesh) and, more recently, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The promenade runs roughly east to west. Its western end meets the famous Scandal Point, where the Ridge joins Mall Road, and its eastern end leads down to Lakkar Bazaar, the wood-craft market. Because the whole stretch is closed to traffic, the easiest way to see it is simply to walk. Even in summer the open ground gets cold once the sun drops, so carry a light woollen if you plan to be here after dark.

History and landmarks on The Ridge

The single most photographed building here is Christ Church, built in the neo-Gothic style in 1844. It is the second-oldest church in North India and still holds services; after dark it is lit up, and at Christmas it becomes the focus of the whole town. Next to it stands the Tudorbethan State Library building of 1910, one of the prettiest bits of colonial architecture left in Shimla.

The quiet surprise is under your feet. A Victorian water reservoir was cut into the Ridge in the 1880s with a capacity of about one million imperial gallons. It was built entirely in lime mortar without any cement, and it still feeds part of Shimla's water supply, which is why heavy vehicles have long been kept off the promenade. Add the four statues and the open parade ground, and the Ridge reads as a compact record of Shimla's last 180 years.

How to reach The Ridge and distances

The Ridge sits at the very centre of Shimla, so almost every arrival point is within a short ride and a final walk. Remember that the last stretch is always on foot, because no vehicles are allowed on the Ridge or Mall Road.

Best time to visit and festivals

Shimla is a year-round hill station, but the Ridge feels different in each season. March to June brings mild, clear days and the town's biggest crowds. July to September is green but wet. December to February turns the promenade white and brings its most distinctive event.

Two festivals bracket the year. The Summer Festival runs over several days in late April or May, when the Ridge fills with live music, dance and food stalls to mark the start of the season. In winter, Shimla holds the only natural ice-skating rink in Asia, so the Winter Sports Festival takes over from December into February with skating, music and local food. If you want the festival buzz, aim for late spring or mid-winter rather than the monsoon.

Shopping and things to do on The Ridge

Most people come to walk, eat and shop. The stretch between Scandal Point and Lakkar Bazaar is lined with shops selling Himachali shawls, woollens, wooden handicrafts and souvenirs, and the cafes here are as much a part of the visit as the view. Sunset is the busiest and best hour: the light drops behind the ranges and the whole promenade turns out for it. Photographers should head for the open ground in front of Christ Church.
