Shikara Ride in Srinagar: Dal Lake Rates, Routes and Timings (2026)

Board at Ghat 1 on Boulevard Road for a sunset loop, or be at Dal Gate before 5:30 am for the floating vegetable market. The June 2023 notice is the newest one we could find in October 2026, so check the rate board at your ghat before you agree a fare.

Shikara Ride Price in Srinagar: The Official Rate Card

You pay for the boat, not the seat. The J&K Tourism Department fixed shikara fares for Dal and Nigeen lakes in a notice reported by Greater Kashmir on 2 June 2023. The first hour costs Rs 700 for up to 3 km, each extra hour costs Rs 400, and a six-hour day is capped at Rs 2,700. If another site tells you Rs 770 an hour, it is quoting an older list from December 2021 that also put the full day at Rs 2,970. In May 2024 the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, directed that these fixed rates be displayed on hoardings at the shikara ghats (Kashmir Reader, 30 May 2024). Look for that board before you agree a fare.

The same notice also fixes a few point-to-point fares, such as the run from Ghats 23 to 25 towards Hazratbal, so on those routes you pay a set price instead of the hourly one.

At Ghat 1 in peak season, boatmen who spot a new arrival often open at Rs 2,000 to 3,000 for an hour. That is three to four times the notified fare. Quoting the board usually brings it down fast. Short crossings from the ghats to the houseboat rows have their own fixed charges of Rs 50 to Rs 100 per boat. Best Shikara Routes on Dal Lake

Pick the route by the time you have. An hour covers the open water in front of Boulevard Road and one island. Two to three hours lets you slip into the narrow channels behind the houseboats, where the lake becomes a neighbourhood.

The one-hour sunset loop

This is the ride most first-timers take, and it earns its popularity. The boat pushes off from Boulevard Road, threads between the front row of houseboats and heads into open water around Nehru Park. Facing east, you watch the light turn the Zabarwan range orange while the Shankaracharya temple catches the last sun on its hill. Start about 70 minutes before sunset so the best light falls mid-ride.

Char Chinari

Char Chinari is a small island laid out in the Mughal period with a chinar tree at each corner. Most of the original trees have died, and the corners have been replanted with transplanted chinars in recent years. In late October the leaves turn rust red and the island becomes the most photographed spot on the lake. Most boatmen let you step onto the island for 10 to 15 minutes. Say you want to before you agree the fare.

Floating gardens, Meena Bazaar and Kabutar Khana

Behind the houseboats the Dal stops looking like a lake. Narrow waterways run between raad, floating mats of reed and soil where farmers grow tomatoes, gourds and the collard greens Kashmiris call haak. Boat shops selling papier-mache, saffron and shawls cluster in an area boatmen call Meena Bazaar. Kabutar Khana, an old pigeon house on its own small island, marks the edge of a houseboat row with its own crossing fare.

Hazratbal and the north shore

The ride from Ghats 23 to 25 to Hazratbal takes you up the quieter northern half of the Dal. It is one of the routes with its own fixed fare, so read it off the ghat board. In July and August the boat cuts through lotus beds taller than the canopy. The shrine sits on the western shore. Dress modestly if you plan to visit the shrine. Pair it with a full day if you also want Nishat ghat.

The Floating Vegetable Market at Dawn

The floating vegetable market runs for about two hours from first light, roughly 5 to 7 am, in the channels near Rainawari. Farmers paddle in from the floating gardens with boats stacked with nadru (lotus stem), haak, turnips and pumpkins, and trade boat to boat with wholesalers. By 7:30 most of them have gone.

Doing it well takes a little planning:

1. Book the boatman the evening before, at the ghat or through your houseboat, and fix a 2-hour or 3-hour fare.

2. Ask for a pickup at 5 am. Houseboat guests are collected from their own steps.

3. Wear a warm layer. Even in May the lake is cold before the sun clears the hills.

4. Ask before you photograph a vendor. Most nod; buying a few vegetables helps.

5. On the way back, stop at a houseboat or a tea boat for kahwa and Kashmiri bread.

The market is quieter in deep winter and on days of heavy rain. Your boatman will know the evening before whether it is worth the early alarm.

What a Shikara Ride Is Like

A shikara is the long, flat wooden boat of Kashmir's lakes. Locals still use them to get around, to fish, to cut lake weed and to carry vegetables to market. The tourist version is the same hull with a sprung seat, a heap of cushions and a carved canopy you can draw curtains across. A ride on the Dal takes you past the houseboat rows and floating gardens towards the Nishat and Shalimar Gardens on the eastern shore and the Hazratbal Shrine on the north shore.

The boat itself has barely changed in generations. Your boatman paddles from the stern with a single heart-shaped oar. Most boats carry a painted name on the side, often something cheerful like "Welcome" or "Happy Honeymoon", and that name is the easiest way to find your boatman again.

Birds and Daily Life on the Water

On most rides, boats selling flowers, kahwa and handicrafts come alongside (more on those in the extras below). Look up as well. Pariah kites circle over the houseboat rows, white-breasted kingfishers sit on the mooring poles, pied kingfishers hover and drop into the open water off Nehru Park, and moorhens pick through the lotus beds along the north shore in summer. Bring binoculars if you have them. The birding is best in the first hour after sunrise, before the lake gets busy.

Where to Board: Shikara Ghats on Boulevard Road

Boulevard Road runs along the Dal's southern and eastern shore, and its numbered ghats (stepped landings) are where most rides start. The numbers rise from Dal Gate towards Nishat, and the fixed crossing fares follow the same groups.

Dal Lake vs Nigeen Lake vs Jhelum vs Wular: Which Shikara Ride?

Dal is the classic ride and the obvious first choice. Nigeen is the better second ride, or the first if you hate crowds. The Jhelum and Wular are for travellers who have already done both.

Best Time for a Shikara Ride: Season and Time of Day

The best months for a shikara ride are April to June and late September to November, when the days are clear and mild. Rides run all year, though. Each season changes what you see from the boat.

Best time of day

Sunrise is the time for the floating market, low mist and birds. Late afternoon into sunset gives the warm light most photographs are taken in, and also the biggest crowd at Ghat 1. Midday is quieter and easier to bargain, but the light is flat. Night rides are possible near the houseboat rows in summer; agree the fare and carry a torch. How to Book a Shikara and Avoid Overcharging

Most visitors simply walk up to a ghat. That works fine once you know the official fare.

Six steps keep the fare honest:

1. Read the rate board at the ghat before anyone approaches you.

2. Agree three things before you step in: the total fare for the boat, the route and the duration.

3. Confirm whether the stop at Char Chinari or Meena Bazaar counts as ride time.

4. Pay at the end, not the start. Carry cash in small notes; many boatmen also take UPI.

5. If a boatman refuses the board rate, walk to the next ghat. There is always another boat.

Is a Shikara Ride Safe? Kids, Seniors and Comfort

A shikara is slow and wide, and capsizes are uncommon. When they do happen it is almost always in a sudden squall. Parts of the Dal are deep, so treat it like any open water.

• Under safety rules issued by the Directorate of Tourism, Kashmir in April 2025, every shikara must carry a life jacket for each passenger, with child-size jackets when children are aboard, and no boat may set off until everyone is wearing one. Put yours on before you sit down. If the boatman can't produce them, take another boat.

• Keep children seated in the middle of the cushion, not at the edge or the bow.

• Don't stand up for photos. Shift your weight slowly when you reach for the camera.

• Skip the ride in strong wind or a thunderstorm; afternoon squalls blow through in spring.

• Seniors should board from the bottom step of the ghat with the boatman holding the boat steady, and avoid the evening crush at Ghat 1.

• Carry a light jacket for sunset and a warm layer at dawn, sunscreen at midday, and water.

• Keep phones on a lanyard or wrist strap. A phone dropped over the side does not come back.

Extras on the Water

Vendor boats will find you within ten minutes of leaving the ghat. Some of what they sell is worth stopping for.

• Kahwa and snacks. Tea boats serve saffron kahwa and Kashmiri bread. Agree the price per cup first.

• Flowers. Flower sellers paddle up with heaps of dahlias and marigolds. Buy a bunch for the canopy if you like; a polite no works too.

• Kashmiri dress photos. Photo boats will dress you in a pheran and headpiece for a portrait. Settle the price per outfit or per photo before you change.

• Handicraft boats. Papier-mache, walnut wood, saffron and shawls. Bargain the way you would in a market, and check saffron quality on land if you are spending real money.

A shikara ride fits into a half day without rushing. Spend the morning at the Mughal Gardens, including Shalimar Bagh and Nishat, which sit on the lake's eastern shore. Have lunch on Boulevard Road and board at Ghat 1 to 12 about an hour before sunset. With two days in the city, add the dawn market on the second morning and a night on a houseboat in between.
