About Bhaja Caves in Lonavala
Bhaja Caves are one of the best places to visit in Maharashtra near Lonavala. It is over 2000 years old and date back to 160 BC. The Bhaja Caves are 22 rock cut caves which looks impressive and magnificent. It is said that the Buddhist monks used to live here and provided shelter to the travelers who were on a trade excursion. The rock excavation of the cave are intricate and very fine that looks marvellous. Various figures like a woman dancing and playing tabla are also excavated inside the caves and it looks just perfect and tell a lot about the history and lifestyle of the people of the 1st century.
Bhaja Caves also known as Bhaje Caves is one of the prettiest places to visit near Lonavala and especially for those who would like to know the ancient history. One of the striking features of the Bhaja Caves is the prayer Hall which has 27 pillars and with a ceiling of wooden beams. Apart from this main area, there are other living quarters which have been built by cutting the rocks. Inside the caves, names of the donors for construction of various places inside the cave have also been inscribed. There are also 14 stupas here which were built in the memory of teachers who lived and died here. Karla and Bhaja Caves are often visited together and have great importance.
