About Stone House in Ooty
The Stone House is a major tourist attraction in Ooty, because it was the very first bungalow to be built here. It was built by John Sullivan, and is one of the most important historic monuments of this hill station. One of the most famous stone houses in India, this one in Ooty is a sight to behold. It marks the beginning of the modernization of the city, as its façade is reminiscent of a colonial structure. The Stone House construction began in the year 1822. The Stone House in Ooty is located in an extremely picturesque location, and offers beautiful views of the lush greenery all around, including views of the mountains that stand sentinel around it. The Stone House is also home to a very old oak tree, probably the oldest in the city and it is known as Sullivan’s Oak.
When John Sullivan first moved to Ooty, he realized the beauty of the place that surrounded him, and he wanted to make it his home. The Englishman had to get a lot of forestland cleared to build roads, to increase accessibility to the city. After building the Stone House, John Sullivan went n to explore other parts of Ooty as well. What used to be his home has now been turned into the official residence of the Government Arts College. When paying a visit to all the major attractions of the city, a visit to the Stone House in Ooty is a must do.
