Beaches in Thailand: Where to Go and How to Plan Your Beach Trip

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6534 reviews )

Karon Beach In Phuket

Karon Beach is the wide, easygoing middle child of Phuket's west coast, sitting between busy Patong to the north and pretty little Kata to the south. It is a roughly 3 km sweep of pale sand that stays broad even at high tide, which is why families and couples pick it over the crush of Patong. You get the same warm Andaman w...

Paradise Beach In Phuket

Paradise Beach is now free to walk into. The old gate fee is gone, so you only pay if you want the 50-baht round-trip shuttle down the steep access road or the 200-baht day package that adds a beach chair, shower and toilets. It is a small, sheltered cove on the south side of Patong Bay in Kathu, about 5 km from Patong itse...

Jomtien Beach In Pattaya

Jomtien Beach is the wide, easygoing stretch of sand about 3 km south of central Pattaya, and the beach most travellers pick when they want the sea without the crush of the Walking Street crowd. Locals call it Chom Thian. The sand runs for roughly 6 km, so there is room to swim, try a water sport or just sit with a plate of...

Coral Island In Pattaya

Also known as Koh Hae, Coral Island near Pattaya is a beautiful island located a few kilometers off the coast of Phuket and Pattaya. It is 3 kilometers and 7 kilometers away from Phuket and Pattaya, respectively. Situated southeast of Phuket, the island is famous for its incredible golden shoreline and beautiful coral reefs...

Thailand has two beach coasts, and the single most useful thing to know before you book is that they run on opposite weather cycles. The Andaman coast in the west (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe) is at its calm, clear best from November to April. The Gulf coast in the east (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) stays good from roughly January into September. Get that one decision right for your dates and the rest of the trip falls into place. This guide covers where to go on each coast, when, and how to plan it. If you just want the shortlist ranked, our guide to the best beaches in Thailand walks through 15 of them.

Beaches in Thailand at a glance

Andaman coast (west) Gulf coast (east)
Islands Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao
Best months November to April roughly January to September
Known for limestone cliffs, dramatic scenery, the classic islands palm-fringed bays, diving, the full-moon party
Fly into Phuket (HKT) or Krabi (KBV) Koh Samui (USM), or via Surat Thani
Wettest stretch May to October October to December

Thailand beaches: a quick comparison

Area Coast Best for Vibe
Krabi (Railay, Phra Nang) Andaman scenery, rock climbing, couples dramatic, low-rise
Phuket Andaman variety, easy access, nightlife busy, full-service
Koh Phi Phi Andaman day trips, Maya Bay, snorkelling lively south, quiet north
Koh Lanta Andaman slow days, sunsets, families relaxed
Koh Lipe Andaman clear-water snorkelling remote, small
Koh Samui Gulf resorts, families, comfort developed
Koh Phangan Gulf quiet bays and the party, both mixed
Koh Tao Gulf diving and learning to dive backpacker, active

Best Andaman-coast beaches (west)

The west coast is the Thailand of postcards: limestone karsts rising out of jade water, longtail boats, and the islands most people picture. Go between November and April.

Krabi: Railay and Phra Nang. Railay is a peninsula with no road, reached only by a 15-minute longtail from Ao Nang. Its cliffs make it Thailand's rock-climbing hub, and a short cliff path leads to Phra Nang, the powder-sand beach that lands on world's-best lists. This is the pick for couples and for scenery.

Koh Phi Phi and Maya Bay. The Phi Phi islands are a boat ride from Krabi or Phuket. The famous Maya Bay (from The Beach) reopened in 2022 under rules that protect it: boats dock behind the island, swimming in the bay is restricted, and a national-park fee applies. The north of Phi Phi Don, around Laem Tong, stays quiet while the south buzzes.

Phuket. Thailand's largest island packs in the most variety and the easiest access. Patong is the loud, central hub for nightlife and water sports; Karon and Kata are longer, calmer stretches; Nai Harn and Kata Noi in the south are the quiet, swimmable choices. One island, a beach for every mood.

Similan Islands. Off Phang Nga, the Similans are a national park famous for diving and snorkelling in glass-clear water. They are day-trip or liveaboard territory and open only in the dry season, so check dates before you plan around them.

The far south: Koh Lipe, Koh Lanta and the Trang islands. Koh Lanta is the Andaman coast at half speed, all sunset bars and long, easy beaches. Further down, tiny Koh Lipe sits in a marine park with some of the clearest snorkelling in the country and runs a slightly later season, staying good into mid-May.

Best Gulf and east-coast beaches

When the Andaman coast turns wet in the mid-year, the Gulf is your answer. These beaches are best from roughly January into September.

Koh Samui (Chaweng and Lamai). Samui is the developed, comfortable choice: full-service resorts, an airport of its own, and two main beaches in busy Chaweng and mellower Lamai. Good for families and for anyone who wants the beach without roughing it.

Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. Koh Tao is one of the cheapest, most popular places in the world to learn to dive. Neighbouring Koh Phangan is best known for its full-moon party, but its northern bays like Thong Nai Pan and remote Bottle Beach are as quiet as Thailand gets.

Koh Chang and Koh Samet (east coast). Closer to the Cambodian border, Koh Chang is a large, jungled island with quiet beaches, while little Koh Samet is the easy weekend escape for people coming from Bangkok.

Pattaya and Jomtien (closest to Bangkok). Pattaya is the nearest beach city to the capital, a couple of hours by road, with Jomtien as its calmer, family-friendlier stretch. Handy for a short add-on rather than a destination in itself.

Andaman vs Gulf: when to go

The rule of thumb is simple. Travelling November to April, choose the Andaman coast and you cannot really go wrong. Travelling May to September, cross to the Gulf, where the rain holds off until later in the year. The two coasts are on opposite sides of the country, so switching between them mid-trip costs a full travel day. Pick one coast per week and you will spend your time on the sand rather than in transit.

How to reach Thailand's beaches

For the Andaman coast, fly into Phuket (HKT) or Krabi (KBV), then reach the islands by ferry or speedboat. For the Gulf, fly into Koh Samui (USM), or fly to Surat Thani and take the ferry across to Samui, Phangan or Tao. Bangkok connects to both by short domestic flights. The small islands (Railay, Koh Lipe, the remote bays) are boat-only, so build a little ferry time into each leg and carry cash, since ATMs are scarce out there.

Plan your Thailand beach trip

Start with your dates, settle on one coast, then choose a base rather than chasing individual beaches: Krabi or Phuket for the Andaman side, Samui for the Gulf. Cluster the beaches that sit close together, keep the boat-only spots as day trips, and leave a travel day if you genuinely want to see both coasts. Across the 40 lakh+ trips planned through TravelTriangle, most Thailand beach itineraries pair one Andaman base with a Phi Phi or island day (? VERIFY exact figure with data team). When the ferries and transfers start to look like work, a Thailand beach tour package bundles the stays, boats and airport pickups into one customisable plan.

We booked a 7D/6N Krabi & Phuket package with Trip Trail through Travel Triangle for our family of 4 adults and 2 children this was our first international tour, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. From the very beginning, Yugal and his team displayed exceptional professionalism – e
very detail of the itinerary was shared with us in advance, making the trip completely stress-free. The tour was meticulously organised – from smooth airport transfers and well-planned excursions to family-friendly activities that kept both adults and kids engaged. What impressed us the most was the constant support from their local team in Thailand, who were available round the clock to address queries or provide assistance whenever needed. This ensured we could simply relax and enjoy our holiday without any concerns. Another standout aspect was their transparency and integrity. All expenses were clearly communicated, and when flight charges reduced, they proactively revised and lowered our package cost. Such honesty is rare and truly commendable. Overall, we had a memorable and worry-free holiday, thanks to Trip Trail’s expertise and dedication. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a well-curated, reliable, and professionally managed travel experience. Special thanks to Yugal and his team for making our family vacation so enjoyable. Highly recommended

    Thailand Travel FAQs

Which part of Thailand has the best beaches?

It depends on when you go. The Andaman coast in the west (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, the Similan Islands, Koh Lipe) has the limestone-cliff scenery and the clearest water, and it is at its best from November to April. The Gulf coast in the east (Koh Samui, Koh Tao, Koh Phangan) is the better bet from about January to September, when the Andaman side is wetter. For a first trip in the dry season, the Andaman coast is the classic pick.

Which beach has the clearest water in Thailand?

Phra Nang Beach and the Railay peninsula in Krabi, Koh Lipe in the far south, and the Similan Islands are consistently rated for the clearest water. Koh Kradan in the Trang islands, voted the world's best beach in 2023, is another. All sit on the Andaman coast and are clearest in the dry season, roughly November to April.

What is the best time to visit Thailand's beaches?

For the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Similan), the best window is November to April. For the Gulf coast (Samui, Tao, Phangan), aim for January to September and avoid October to December, when the Gulf gets its heaviest rain. The Similan Islands are open only from 15 October to 15 May. December to April is the safest all-round period.

Which Thai beach is best for families?

Kata and Karon in Phuket have wide, gentle sand and easy facilities; Koh Samui's north-coast bays (Bophut, Maenam) and Koh Lanta's long west-coast beaches are calm and low-key; and Jomtien near Pattaya is reachable without a flight. All have shallow, swimmable water and plenty of resorts geared to children.

Which Thai beaches are best for couples and honeymooners?

Railay and Phra Nang in Krabi are the classic honeymoon beaches for their cliffs and seclusion, Koh Lipe and the Trang islands for quiet luxury, and Bottle Beach on Koh Phangan for a hard-to-reach romantic escape. Many couples base themselves in Krabi or on Koh Samui and add a private island day trip; see our Thailand honeymoon packages to plan it.

Which beach is best for a first trip or a smaller budget?

Phuket is the easiest first base, with the most flights, the widest range of stays and day trips to Phi Phi and the Similans from one spot. For value, Koh Tao is the cheapest island to dive and snorkel, and the east-coast beaches near Bangkok (Pattaya, Jomtien, Koh Samet) skip the domestic flight entirely.

Is Maya Bay open, and can you swim there?

Maya Bay, on Koh Phi Phi Leh, reopened in January 2022 after being closed to let its reef recover. It is open to visitors but under strict rules: a national-park fee applies, swimming in the bay and anchoring boats inside are not allowed, and the bay closes for part of the low season each year. Check the current dates before booking a Phi Phi tour.

Which beaches are closest to Bangkok?

Pattaya and Jomtien are about a two-hour drive from Bangkok with no flight needed, and Koh Larn (Coral Island) is a short boat hop offshore for clearer water. Koh Samet, three to four hours away plus a short ferry, sits in a rain shadow and is the driest nearby island. Koh Chang is further east, around five to six hours in total.

How many days do you need for a Thailand beach trip?

Five to seven nights is comfortable for one coast: three or four nights around Krabi or Phuket covers the Andaman islands, or the same on Koh Samui and Koh Phangan covers the Gulf. To combine both coasts without rushing, plan nine to ten nights, since the two are a full travel day apart.

Can I book the whole trip as a package?

Yes. Chaining islands, ferries and transfers is the fiddly part, so many travellers let a planner handle it. Our Thailand beach tour packages put the stays, boats and pickups into one customisable itinerary.
