Railay Beach In Krabi

Railay Beach, Krabi: Complete Travel Guide 2026

Enjoy the pristine natural beauty at its best at the Railay Beach

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6534 reviews )

Railay Beach sits on a limestone peninsula in Krabi, on Thailand's Andaman coast, and the first thing to know about it is that no road reaches it. Sheer cliffs cut Railay off from the mainland, so you arrive the same way locals have for decades: by longtail boat, about 10 to 15 minutes from Ao Nang. That short crossing is why Railay feels like an island even though it is technically part of the mainland, and it is why the four beaches here stay calmer than Krabi's drive-up spots. Railay is really four shores in one, Railay West, Railay East, Phra Nang and Tonsai, and each has its own character: swimming and sunsets on one, mangrove and budget stays on the next, the postcard cove and a cave shrine on the third, and the climbers' hangout on the last.

The Four Beaches of Railay: West, East, Phra Nang and Tonsai

Most confusion about Railay clears up the moment you picture it as four separate beaches on one small headland. You can walk between all of them, and the longest stroll, from Tonsai across to Phra Nang, takes well under half an hour.

Railay West

This is the wide, pale-sand curve most people picture when they think Railay. Longtail boats from Ao Nang pull straight onto the sand here, the water is clear and calm enough to swim, and because the beach faces roughly west it is where everyone gathers for the sunset. Resorts back onto it, so it is also the most polished stretch. Aim to be on the sand by late afternoon between November and March.

Railay East

The eastern side is the working side of the peninsula. It faces a mangrove-fringed bay that goes to mudflat at low tide, so it is not the place to swim, but it is where the cheaper guesthouses, bars and the little Walking Street lane of shops and cheap eats all cluster, along with the path up to the viewpoint. If you are travelling on a budget or came to climb, you will probably sleep on Railay East and cross to West or Phra Nang for the water.

Phra Nang Beach

Phra Nang is the one that lands on postcards: a short crescent of soft sand tucked under a huge overhanging cliff, with warm, shallow water. At its far end is the Phra Nang Cave shrine, a small cave the local fishing community fills with offerings for a sea princess spirit, a genuinely unusual thing to walk into on a beach day. It is a 10-minute walk from Railay East and gets busy by midday, so come early.

Tonsai

Around the next headland, Tonsai is the rough-edged, backpacker and climber end of Railay. Cheaper rooms, a laid-back bar scene after dark, and some of the hardest climbing routes on the peninsula. It is reachable on foot from Railay West at low tide or by a short longtail hop.

How to Reach Railay Beach

Railay has no road access, so every route ends with a boat. The quickest and most common option is a shared longtail boat from Ao Nang beach, roughly 10 to 15 minutes across the bay. Boats leave once they fill up (usually eight passengers), and you wade the last few steps onto Railay West. The shared fare runs about 100 THB per person by day and about 150 THB after 6 pm, bought as a paper ticket from the Ao Nang Boat Club kiosk rather than paid to the driver. From Krabi Town or the Ao Nam Mao pier the ride is longer, about 25 to 45 minutes, and it is the easier choice if you are carrying luggage because it drops you on Railay East. Flying in, you land at Krabi International Airport (KBV), around 30 km by road, then transfer by taxi or minivan to Ao Nang or a pier and finish by boat.

For pier-by-pier directions and live fares, see our Railay Beach how to reach guide, and check gate and activity charges on the Railay Beach entry fees page.

Best Things to Do at Railay Beach

Railay packs a surprising amount into a peninsula you can cross on foot. Here is what actually fills a day or two.

Rock climbing

Railay is one of the world's great climbing destinations. The limestone karsts hold hundreds of bolted routes (climbers often quote 700-plus) across every grade, and the schools on Railay East and Tonsai run half-day beginner sessions where you can top a route on your first afternoon with no prior experience. Deep-water soloing, climbing unroped over the sea and dropping off, runs from Tonsai in the calm months. A useful local tip: book the morning climbing session, not the afternoon, because the rock is cooler and the light on the cliffs is better.

The Railay Viewpoint and hidden Lagoon

A steep, rope-assisted scramble starts from Railay East and climbs to a viewpoint over both West and Phra Nang beaches, some of the best photos on the peninsula. Branch off partway down and a harder, muddier descent drops you into a hidden emerald lagoon inside the cliffs, which fills and empties with the tide. Wear proper shoes, skip it after rain, and do not attempt the lagoon route in flip-flops.

Phra Nang cave, kayaking and the water

Beyond climbing, most of Railay's activity is on the water. Sea kayaking from Railay East or Ao Nang lets you paddle into caves and around the karst islands at your own pace. Snorkelling and diving trips run to the reefs and nearby islands, and longtail day tours reach Phra Nang cave beach, Chicken Island and the Krabi four-islands loop. On land, the Phra Nang Cave shrine and the short Diamond Cave walk are easy add-ons. After dark, Railay East and Tonsai have a low-key bar scene rather than a party strip.

Best Time to Visit Railay, and an Overnight Tip

The dry season, November to March, is the time to come: clear skies, calm seas and the most reliable boat access. April to June turns hot and humid, and July to October is the monsoon, when rain is frequent and rougher water can cancel crossings. The single best tip for Railay is to stay the night. Most visitors arrive on day trips and leave by around 6 pm, and once the last longtails pull out the four beaches turn quiet and local, the sunset over Railay West with half the crowd gone is the version worth staying for.

Opening hours and any seasonal activity closures are listed on our Railay Beach timings page, and our Railay travel tips cover what to pack and pier-side cash points.

Where Railay Fits in Your Krabi and Thailand Trip

Railay is rarely a trip on its own; it is the highlight stop on a wider Krabi or Andaman-coast itinerary. Two or three nights around Ao Nang and Railay pairs naturally with the Krabi four-islands boat tour and day trips to Koh Poda, Maya Bay and the Phi Phi islands, and it slots easily onto a longer Phuket-Krabi or Bangkok-and-beaches route. Across the Krabi and Phuket trips our travellers plan, Railay is one of the most-added stops on a southern Thailand beach holiday.

If you would rather have the boats, hotels and island-hopping arranged for you, browse our Thailand beach tour packages or the full range of Thailand tour packages, each customisable and bookable through a verified local agent. For the wider region, our Krabi travel guide and Thailand tourism guide map out how Railay connects to Phuket, Bangkok, Pattaya and Chiang Mai.

Boat fares, tour prices and hotel rates on the packages we suggest are checked by our Krabi desk before they reach you.

The check-in process was seamless. The accommodation itself was beyond my expectations.I really love the swimming pool and the buffet breakfast. Beyond the hotel, the itinerary you crafted for us was diverse and captivating. His commitment was commendable. We took 4 night 5 days package. The hotels we stayed were fortunately good. Cab serv

Like we had a bangkok city tour in our package but reclining budha/watarun temple was not part of it. Better to have it included in basic packages which would improve customer satisfaction. But overall it was a good and hustle free experience.

Get your answers — before you plan your trip.

    Krabi Travel FAQs

How do you get to Railay Beach?

Only by boat, because no road reaches the peninsula. The usual route is a shared longtail from Ao Nang, about 10 to 15 minutes onto Railay West, for around 100 THB per person by day (about 150 THB after 6 pm), bought as a paper ticket at the Ao Nang Boat Club kiosk. From Krabi Town or the Ao Nam Mao pier the crossing is longer, roughly 25 to 45 minutes, and lands you on Railay East, which is the better choice with luggage. Flying in, you reach Krabi International Airport (KBV) and transfer to a pier.

    Is Railay Beach worth visiting?

Yes. The draw is the scenery, huge limestone cliffs rising straight out of clear water, and the fact that a short boat ride buys you a beach with no traffic or resorts crowding the sand. Rock climbers rate it among the best in the world, Phra Nang is one of Thailand's prettiest beaches, and the viewpoint and hidden lagoon are genuine adventures. If you only have a half-day it still rewards the trip; with a night you get it at its quiet best.

What is the best time to visit Railay Beach?

November to March, the dry season, is ideal: clear skies, calm seas and dependable boat crossings. April to June is hot and humid but still fine, while July to October is the monsoon, when frequent rain and rough water can cancel longtail boats. Whatever the month, mornings are calmer and less crowded than afternoons.

Can you swim at Railay Beach?

On Railay West and Phra Nang, yes, both have clear, shallow, swimmable water and are the beaches to head for. Railay East faces a mangrove bay that empties to mudflat at low tide, so it is used for boats and budget stays rather than swimming. Check the tide, since even the good beaches shrink at high water under the cliffs.

How many days do you need at Railay Beach?

One to three days suits most travellers. A single day covers the main beaches and a boat tour; two or three days let you add a climbing session, the viewpoint and lagoon hike, and an unhurried sunset or two. Many visitors base in Ao Nang and treat Railay as a series of easy day trips.

Do you need to bring cash to Railay Beach?

Bring enough Thai baht for your stay. Railay has very limited ATMs and they often charge high fees or run empty, and longtail boats, small cafes and climbing shops usually want cash. Withdraw what you need in Ao Nang or Krabi Town before you cross.

What is there to do at Railay Beach?

Rock climbing on the limestone cliffs (with beginner sessions), the rope-assisted hike to the Railay Viewpoint and hidden lagoon, sea kayaking around the karsts, snorkelling and diving trips, and longtail day tours to Phra Nang cave beach and the Krabi four islands. Add the Phra Nang Cave shrine and Diamond Cave, then a quiet beach sunset to close the day.
