Karon Beach In Phuket

Karon Beach, Phuket: The Complete 2026 Guide

Visit here to witness the spectacular view of nature

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6533 reviews )

Built from 2,00,000+ Thailand trips planned and cross-checked against each venue's official information and Tourism Authority of Thailand guidance.

Karon Beach is the wide, easygoing middle child of Phuket's west coast, sitting between busy Patong to the north and pretty little Kata to the south. It is a roughly 3 km sweep of pale sand that stays broad even at high tide, which is why families and couples pick it over the crush of Patong. You get the same warm Andaman water, the same jet skis and parasails, and a proper strip of seafood grills and massage stalls behind the sand, but with room to breathe. This guide covers the best time to go, how to reach Karon, the top things to do, where to stay, and the question most first-timers ask, whether Karon, Patong or Kata is the right base. We also plan Phuket trips end to end, so every activity below is one you can book as part of a package.

Karon Beach at a Glance

Location West coast of Phuket, between Patong (north) and Kata (south)
Beach length About 3 km of wide white sand
Vibe Broad, relatively calm, mid-range; families and couples over party crowds
Best for Swimming Nov-Apr, surfing May-Oct, watersports, sunsets, seafood
Best time to visit November to April (dry, calm sea)
Nearest airport Phuket International (HKT), about 45 km / 1 hr by taxi or Grab
From Patong About 8-9 km, 15-20 min by songthaew or Grab
Nearest beach Kata Beach, about 600 m south
Book with us Phuket tour packages, island-hopping, watersports and honeymoon trips

Karon earns its reputation the moment you step onto it. The sand is famously squeaky underfoot, the water shelves gently enough for a real swim in the dry season, and the beachfront is stocked with rental sunbeds, umbrellas, cold drinks and shoulder massages. It is also a genuinely good-value base. Seafood is cheap and excellent, the mid-range hotels sit a short walk back from the sand, and the family-friendly Dino Park Mini Golf glows at the southern end after dark. For the record, the old line that Karon is a small beach is a myth. What people call Karon is really three or four run-together neighbourhoods, from the quiet north near the Hilton down to the livelier Kata end, all of it walkable along one long promenade.

Want the practical page-by-page detail? We keep separate guides to Karon Beach entry fees and opening times for the paid attractions nearby.

Best Time to Visit Karon Beach

Karon runs on two seasons. The dry northeast-monsoon window from November to April is when the sea flattens out, the sky clears, and swimming is at its safest and best; December to February is peak, so book ahead. From May to October the southwest monsoon rolls in, bringing short heavy downpours, bigger swell and rip currents. It is quieter and cheaper then, and it is also the surf season, but you have to respect the lifeguard flags. When the red flags are up, stay out of the water. The table below is the quick version.

Season Months What to expect Good for
Peak / dry Dec - Feb Sunny, calm sea, warm nights; busiest and priciest Swimming, families, first trips
Shoulder / dry Nov, Mar - Apr Still dry and calm, thinner crowds, hot by April Best value in the dry window
Monsoon May - Oct Short heavy rain, big swell, rip currents, red-flag days Surfing, budget stays, low crowds

Swim-safety note: rip currents at Karon cause drownings most monsoon seasons. Swim between the flags, near a lifeguard tower, and skip the water on red-flag days. For the full season-by-season breakdown, see our wider Phuket travel guide.

How to Reach Karon Beach

Karon sits on Phuket's southwest coast, about 45 km from Phuket International Airport (HKT). A metered taxi or a Grab ride takes roughly an hour, a little more in traffic, and is the simplest door-to-door option. If you are already on the island, Karon is an easy hop: about 8 to 9 km south of Patong, 15 to 20 minutes by the local songthaew (the shared blue trucks) or a quick Grab, and only a couple of minutes over the headland from Kata. Tuk-tuks work for short beach-to-beach runs but negotiate the price first. Phuket's Smart Bus also runs along the west coast between the airport, Patong, Karon and Kata if you would rather not drive.

"In the monsoon months the safest swimming is the northern third of Karon, near the manned lifeguard tower; the south end pulls the strongest rip," says the TravelTriangle Phuket desk. Distances and fares on this page are checked by our Phuket desk against maps and each venue's official information before it goes live.

For step-by-step routes and current transfer costs, see our dedicated how to reach Karon Beach page.

Top Things to Do in Karon Beach

Karon is more than a place to lie down. The beach itself is the main event, but a cluster of watersports, a temple market, a hilltop viewpoint and one of Asia's biggest water parks are all within a short ride. Here is what is worth your time.

Watersports on the sand

Through the dry season the beachfront runs the full Andaman menu: parasailing over the bay, jet skis, sea kayaks, banana-boat rides and snorkelling off the calmer northern end. Rates are quoted per ride and are negotiable, so agree the price and the loop before you push off. The clear, gently shelving water also makes Karon a comfortable spot for a first snorkel or a discover-scuba taster. Every one of these is bookable as part of a Phuket trip; see our beach and watersports packages for the bundled options.

Surf a beginner-friendly break (May to October)

When the monsoon swell arrives, Karon turns into one of Phuket's more forgiving surf beaches. A handful of shacks near the middle of the sand rent soft-top boards by the hour and run beginner lessons. The waves are best from June to September; it is genuinely fun, but only surf near the lifeguard flags because the same swell that makes the waves also drives the rip currents.

Dino Park Mini Golf

At the southern Kata end, Dino Park is an 18-hole mini-golf course threaded through a jungle of life-size dinosaurs, waterfalls and a smoking volcano, all lit up at night. It is a reliable evening with kids and costs around THB 790 for adults and THB 490 for children. Give it about an hour, then eat at the attached Flintstones-themed restaurant next door.

Karon Temple and the Karon Temple Market

Wat Suwan Khirikhet, the temple everyone calls Karon Temple, sits just back from the beach road and is worth a quiet look for its ornate hall and giant gold Buddha. The bigger draw for most visitors is the Karon Temple Market held in its grounds on Tuesdays and Fridays, a proper local night market for street food, fruit, cheap clothes and souvenirs at fair prices. Cover your shoulders and knees if you go into the temple itself.

Karon Viewpoint

A ten-minute drive south, the Karon Viewpoint (also called the Kata Viewpoint) gives you the postcard shot of three bays in one frame: Kata Noi, Kata and Karon curving away up the coast. It is free, best in the late afternoon, and an easy add-on if you are already heading to or from Kata.

Andamanda Phuket and a day beyond the sand

Ten to fifteen minutes inland, Andamanda Phuket is a huge Thai-mythology-themed water park with a wave pool, a lazy river and serious slides, a strong rainy-day or with-kids call. Karon also makes a handy base for the island's headline sights. The Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill is a short drive away, Simon Cabaret in Patong is the famous evening show, and the boat piers for island-hopping and the Phi Phi day trips are an easy transfer. We can fold any of these into a Thailand tour Package so the transfers and tickets are sorted before you land.

Planning where to eat? Our roundup of the best restaurants in Karon Beach covers the seafood grills and cafes along the strip.

Karon vs Patong vs Kata: Which Beach Is Right for You?

This is the decision that shapes a Phuket trip, because the three west-coast beaches sit within a few kilometres of each other but feel completely different. Patong is the party. Kata is the compact, pretty one. Karon is the roomy middle ground. Here is how they compare on the things that actually decide it.

What matters Karon Patong Kata
Crowd / space Wide, rarely feels packed Busiest, most built-up Small and can get crowded
Nightlife Low-key bars, early nights Full-on: Bangla Road, clubs A few bars, mellow
Families Very good, room to spread out Loud and adult-leaning Good, but tighter
Swimming Good in dry season, rips in monsoon Sheltered but crowded water Good, gentle in the dry season
Value Strong mid-range value Priciest, most touristy Mid to upper
Dining Cheap seafood, relaxed Endless choice, from cheap to flashy Good cafes, smaller scene
Best for Families and couples wanting space Nightlife and first-time buzz Couples and a short, pretty stay

Choose Karon if you want a real beach with space, easy swimming in season and calmer evenings, with Patong's nightlife still only 15 minutes away when you want it. Pick Patong if the nightlife is the point. Go to Kata if you want somewhere smaller and postcard-pretty for a couple of nights.

Nearby Beaches and Attractions

One of Karon's quiet advantages is that almost everything on Phuket's southwest is close by. Kata Beach is about 600 m over the southern headland, a shorter, prettier curve with good swimming and a small surf scene of its own. Just beyond it, Kata Noi is the tucked-away cove for a quieter day. Patong and its nightlife are 8 to 9 km north. Inland and along the coast you have the Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill, the important Wat Chalong temple, and the Karon Viewpoint over the three bays. For the full spread of temples, viewpoints and day trips, browse our Phuket things-to-do guide.

Where to Stay in Karon Beach

Karon's hotels line up in a tidy band a short walk back from the sand, which keeps even the mid-range rooms close to the beach. Rough guide by budget:

Budget and mid-range. Small guesthouses and three-star hotels a block or two back from the beach road are the sweet spot here, clean, walkable and well under what an equivalent Patong room costs. Good for families who want space without the splurge.

Upper-mid and beachfront. Novotel Phuket Karon Beach Resort and Beyond Karon sit close to the sand with pools and easy beach access, a comfortable step up without going full luxury.

Luxury. The Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket anchors the quiet northern end with a lagoon pool and direct beach access, and the Hilton and similar resorts round out the top tier. For a hand-picked stay bundled with transfers and tours, our Phuket honeymoon and family packages match the hotel to your trip.

Across the Phuket trips we plan, Karon is the beach families ask for most when they want space without leaving the action behind.

Overall, we had a very good experience with our travel agent. The trip was planned well, all commitments were fulfilled as promised, and the coordination throughout the journey was smooth. The team was responsive, professional, and ensured that transfers, sightseeing, and bookings were arranged prop
erly, making the trip hassle-free. The only major disappointment was the hotel selected in Pattaya. The rooms were quite compact, we encountered cockroaches in the room, and the towels provided were not up to the expected standard. This part of the experience could have been much better. The itinerary was well designed overall; however, for some outdoor attractions, scheduling visits during the evening would have been preferable, especially during the summer season, to avoid the intense daytime heat and make sightseeing more comfortable. Despite these points, we appreciate the effort and support provided by the travel agent. The trip was enjoyable, and with a little more attention to hotel selection and timing of certain activities, the experience could have been excellent.

Vrushabh's 7 days trip to Phuket

We recently booked an 11-day, 10-night land package to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, covering Bangkok, Phuket, and Krabi. Traveling with a 2-year-old can be challenging, but the overall experience was smooth and well-coordinated. Our itinerary was packed with great activities. In Bangkok, Safa
ri World was a huge hit with our little one, and the temple tours were beautiful. The Krabi leg was fantastic—the 7 Island Tour and the Jungle Tour were standouts. In Phuket, the Phi Phi Island tour and the Old City tour were both well-managed and enjoyable. Since we only opted for the land package and airport transfers, we relied heavily on their punctuality. The transfers were seamless, which is a massive relief when you’re hauling luggage and a toddler! The only disappointment was the Elephant Sanctuary tour. It felt very rushed, lasting only about an hour and a half, which didn't quite meet our expectations compared to the quality of the other excursions. Overall, we had a wonderful family holiday. Travtree Holidays provided great service and reliable transport. Highly recommended for families looking for a well-organized Thailand experience!

We recently booked our family trip to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, and it turned out to be an absolutely wonderful experience from start to finish. The entire itinerary was very well organized, making the trip smooth and stress-free—especially important when traveling with young children (our ki
ds are 2 and 5 years old). All pick-ups were perfectly on time, and the vehicles provided were clean, comfortable, and spacious, which made commuting easy and relaxing for the whole family. The hotels arranged for us were excellent—family-friendly, comfortable, and conveniently located. Everything was thoughtfully planned, allowing us to enjoy each destination without any hassle. A special mention goes to our visits to Siam Ocean World (sea life) and Safari World & Marine Park. Both experiences were incredibly impressive and became the highlight of our trip. Siam Water World was fantastic for the kids, with exciting views of the sea creatures penguins etc that they thoroughly enjoyed. Safari World was equally amazing—the safari drive and shows were captivating, and seeing the animals up close was a memorable experience for both adults and children. Overall, Travtree Holidays ensured a seamless, enjoyable, and perfectly managed vacation for our family. We truly appreciate their professionalism and attention to detail and would highly recommend them to anyone planning a trip to Thailand—especially families traveling with young kids.

    Phuket Travel FAQs

What is the best time to visit Karon Beach?

November to April is the best window, when the Andaman Sea is calm and clear and swimming is at its safest. December to February is peak season, so it is sunniest but busiest and priciest. From May to October the southwest monsoon brings short heavy rain, bigger surf and rip currents; it is cheaper and good for surfing, but you must respect the lifeguard flags.

How far is Karon Beach from Patong and from Phuket airport?

Karon is about 8 to 9 km south of Patong, a 15 to 20 minute ride by songthaew or Grab. From Phuket International Airport (HKT) it is roughly 45 km, about an hour by taxi or Grab depending on traffic. Kata Beach is only about 600 m over the southern headland.

Is Karon Beach good for families?

Yes, it is one of the better family beaches in Phuket. The sand is wide so it rarely feels crowded, the water shelves gently for swimming in the dry season, and family attractions like Dino Park Mini Golf and Andamanda Phuket water park are close. Evenings are calmer than Patong, with plenty of relaxed, cheap seafood spots.

Can you swim at Karon Beach year-round?

You can swim comfortably from November to April, when the sea is calm. During the May to October monsoon the surf and rip currents get dangerous, and there are red-flag days when swimming is not safe at all. Whatever the season, swim between the flags and near a lifeguard tower, and stay out of the water when the red flags are flying.

Karon Beach or Kata Beach: which is better?

Karon is the bigger, wider beach with more room and slightly calmer evenings, so it suits families and anyone who wants space. Kata is smaller and prettier, with a compact, walkable centre and a gentle swimming beach, which many couples prefer for a short stay. They are 600 m apart, so you can easily base at one and visit the other.

Karon Beach or Patong: which is better?

Choose Karon for a wider, calmer beach, better value and quieter nights, with Patong's nightlife still only about 15 minutes away. Choose Patong if the nightlife, the crowds and the buzz of Bangla Road are the whole point of your trip. Many travellers stay at Karon and go to Patong for a night out.

What are the best things to do near Karon Beach?

On the sand you have parasailing, jet skis, kayaking, snorkelling and monsoon-season surfing. Nearby are Dino Park Mini Golf, the Karon Temple and its Tuesday and Saturday night market, the Karon Viewpoint over three bays, and Andamanda Phuket water park. Karon is also a handy base for the Big Buddha, Simon Cabaret and island-hopping day trips to Phi Phi.

Is Karon Beach too crowded or too small?

No. Karon is one of Phuket's longest and widest beaches, so even in peak season it holds a crowd without feeling packed. What people sometimes call a small beach is really several run-together neighbourhoods along one promenade, from the quiet north end down to the livelier Kata end, all walkable.
