Ao Nang Beach, Krabi: Things To Do, Best Time & Travel Guide (2026)

Explore the wonderful Ao Nang beach

Rated 4.40/5 ( based on 6532 reviews )

Ao Nang Beach at a Glance

Ao Nang Beach is the main beach town on Krabi's Andaman coast and the launch point for almost every island trip in the area. It sits about 26 km from Krabi International Airport, roughly a 40-minute drive, which makes it the easiest base for a first Krabi visit. The beach itself is a long strip of soft sand backed by a promenade of restaurants, dive shops and tour desks, with limestone cliffs rising straight out of the sea just offshore. Longtail boats leave from the sand for Railay, Poda and the 4 Islands, so you can wake up in town and be snorkelling by mid-morning. This guide covers when to go, how to get there, the top things to do, and the day trips worth booking.

Detail Ao Nang Beach
Location West coast of Krabi, southern Thailand (Andaman Sea)

Ideal trip length 3 to 5 nights as a Krabi base
Famous for Island hopping, longtail boats, rock climbing, sunsets
Top day trips 4 Islands, Phi Phi & Maya Bay, Hong Islands
Getting around Walkable town; songthaew, longtail boat, scooter

Ao Nang Beach, Krabi: An Overview

Ao Nang is Krabi's tourist hub, a compact town you can walk end to end in about half an hour. It grew up around the beach, so the whole place points at the water. One main road runs along the sand, then bends inland past the night market, massage shops and travel agents. Behind the town, forested limestone hills close it in, which is why Ao Nang never sprawled the way Patong did in Phuket. It also has a reputation as one of the more Western-friendly beach towns in the south, with English menus and easy tour booking on every corner, without losing the longtail-and-limestone character people come to Krabi for. Across the Thailand trips our team plans, Krabi is one of the most-booked beach destinations for couples and families.

Best Time to Visit Ao Nang Beach

The best time to visit Ao Nang Beach is November to March, when the Andaman coast is dry, the sea is calm and the island boats run every day. This is peak season, so book flights and rooms ahead. April and May turn hot and humid but stay mostly dry, with cheaper rooms and quieter sand before the rains arrive. From June to October the southwest monsoon brings heavy showers and rougher seas; some longtail operators pause island trips on the windiest days, though plenty of mornings are still bright enough to swim. If you want guaranteed island-hopping weather, aim for December to February.

Season Months Weather Good for
Peak (dry) Nov to Mar Sunny, calm sea, ~24-32C Island hopping, best all-round
Hot Apr to May Hot, humid, mostly dry Fewer crowds, lower room rates
Monsoon Jun to Oct Frequent rain, rougher sea Deals, green scenery, flexible plans

How to Reach Ao Nang Beach

Ao Nang has no airport or train station of its own, so almost everyone arrives through Krabi International Airport (KBV), about 26 km away. From the airport, a shared minibus to Ao Nang takes 35 to 45 minutes and costs around 150 to 200 THB per person, while a private taxi does it in roughly 30 minutes. Already in Krabi Town? The local white songthaew runs to Ao Nang in about 30 minutes for around 60 THB. Coming from Phuket or Phang Nga, buses and minivans reach Ao Nang in three to four hours. Once you are in town, the beach and most hotels are within walking distance, and longtail boats leave straight from the sand for Railay and the nearby islands. For station names, exact fares and current schedules, see our full how to reach Ao Nang Beach guide.

Top Things to Do at Ao Nang Beach

Ao Nang is less a beach you laze on all day and more a springboard for the water around it. Here is what fills a trip, from the boat trips everyone books to the quiet hour at sunset.

Thing to do Best for Good to know
Island hopping (4 Islands) First-timers, families Longtail or speedboat, half or full day
Phi Phi & Maya Bay day trip Iconic scenery, snorkelling Speedboat ~90 min each way
Hong Islands tour Quiet lagoons, kayaking Full-day boat from Ao Nang / Nopparat Thara
Rock climbing at Railay Adventure, all levels 700+ bolted routes, schools on the beach
Snorkelling & scuba diving Marine life Day boats and PADI courses in town
Longtail to Railay Half day, beaches & caves 15 to 20 min from the Ao Nang sand
Ao Nang Night Market Evenings, street food Walking Street off the beach road
Sunset & Thai massage Slow evenings West-facing beach, shops along the strip

Go island hopping on the 4 Islands tour

The single most-booked trip out of Ao Nang is the 4 Islands tour, and for many people it is the reason they came. A longtail or speedboat loops Phra Nang Cave Beach, Chicken Island (Koh Kai) with its fin-shaped headland, Tup Island and Koh Poda, where a sandbar links the islets at low tide. You get several snorkel stops and a beach lunch, run as a half or full day. Longtails are cheaper and slower; speedboats squeeze more stops into the same hours.

Day-trip to Phi Phi and Maya Bay

Ao Nang is one of the launch points for Koh Phi Phi Le, about 90 minutes away by speedboat. A standard day trip circles the Phi Phi islands with snorkelling at Pileh Lagoon and a stop at Maya Bay, the cove made famous by the film The Beach and now reopened under a capped-visitor system that protects the reef. It is a long day on the water, so it suits confident swimmers more than very young children.

See the Hong Islands

For calmer water and fewer boats, the Hong Islands sit north of Ao Nang inside a marine park. The draw is the Hong lagoon, a near-enclosed pool of clear green water you can kayak into, plus quiet white-sand beaches for swimming. Full-day tours leave from Ao Nang and the nearby Nopparat Thara pier.

Rock climbing at Railay and Tonsai

Krabi is one of Asia's best rock-climbing spots, and the limestone walls at Railay and Tonsai, a short longtail from Ao Nang, hold more than 700 bolted routes. Half-day beginner sessions with a guide and gear start right off the beach, so you can try it with zero experience. Seasoned climbers come for the multi-pitch lines and deep-water soloing straight off the boat.

Snorkelling, scuba diving and kayaking

The reefs around Ao Nang carry enough marine life to fill a trip. Snorkelling and scuba diving are the headline draws, and town dive shops run day boats to nearby sites plus PADI courses for first-timers. Prefer to stay on the surface? Rent a kayak and paddle to Tonsai, Railay or Chicken Island under your own steam, an easy, low-cost way to reach beaches the tour boats skip.

Hike to a viewpoint

If you want to earn a view, short forest trails climb into the hills behind town. The route up Hang Nak (sometimes written Hang Mak) is steep and takes a few hours round trip, ending on a ridge that looks out over the coastline and the islands. Start early, carry water, and wear proper shoes; the effort is real, and so is the payoff.

Ao Nang Night Market and Walking Street

When the sun drops, dinner moves to the Ao Nang Night Market and the Walking Street just off the beach road. Stalls sell grilled seafood, pad thai, mango sticky rice and cheap souvenirs, and it is the easiest, most local-feeling meal in town. Want a bigger, more local market? The one in Krabi Town is a 30-minute ride away; browse the full list of places to visit in Krabi to plan it in.

Watch the sunset and get a Thai massage

Ao Nang faces due west, which makes the beach the sunset spot. Grab a drink at a shorefront bar and watch the sky go orange behind the longtails. Afterwards, the strip is lined with massage shops where an hour of traditional Thai massage costs a fraction of what you would pay at home. It is the classic way to close out a day of island hopping.

Beaches and Attractions Near Ao Nang

Ao Nang works best as a base, because the beaches and sights around it are a short boat ride or drive away.

Railay Beach. A 15 to 20 minute longtail from Ao Nang, Railay is cut off from the mainland by cliffs, so it feels like an island. Railay West has the swimming sand, Railay East the climbing and cheaper stays, and a short path links both to Phra Nang.

Phra Nang Cave Beach. On the tip of the Railay peninsula, Phra Nang is many travellers' favourite beach in Krabi: fine sand, a shrine cave hung with offerings, and cliffs you can watch climbers scale from the water.

Nopparat Thara Beach. Just north of the main strip, Nopparat Thara is a longer, quieter beach and national-park pier. At low tide a sandbar lets you walk out toward a small island, and it is the departure point for several island tours.

Koh Poda and Chicken Island. Two of the prettiest stops on the 4 Islands loop, Koh Poda has a wide swimming beach and Chicken Island a strange fin-shaped headland. Both are snorkel-friendly and close enough for a half-day trip.

Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea). About 40 minutes inland, the Tiger Cave Temple rewards a 1,200-plus step climb with a hilltop Buddha and a huge view over Krabi. Go at dawn to beat the heat and the crowds.

Emerald Pool and hot springs. Deeper inland, the Emerald Pool is a clear, spring-fed lake in the jungle, usually paired with the nearby hot-spring waterfalls on a full-day tour from Ao Nang.

Where to Stay in Ao Nang

Ao Nang packs a lot of rooms into a small town, so you can stay cheap or splurge within a few streets of the sand.

Budget. Guesthouses and hostels a street or two back from the beach, roughly 600 to 1,200 THB a night, walkable to everything.

Mid-range. Pool resorts and 3 to 4 star hotels near the promenade, around 1,500 to 3,500 THB, the sweet spot for most couples and families.

Luxury. Cliffside and beachfront resorts on the headlands toward Nopparat Thara and Ao Phra Nang, from about 6,000 THB upward, many with sea views and spas.

Book the November to March peak well ahead, as the best-value rooms sell out first.

Ao Nang Beach Tours and Day Trips

Because Ao Nang is a launch pad, the simplest way to see the islands is a guided tour rather than piecing boats together yourself. The favourites are the 4 Islands tour, the Phi Phi and Maya Bay speedboat trip, the Hong Islands loop and the James Bond Island tour over in Phang Nga Bay. Most run as half or full days with hotel pickup, lunch and snorkel gear, and a Krabi trip usually strings two or three of them together. If you would rather have the boats, transfers and hotels arranged as one trip, browse our Thailand tour packages, or plan a wider route through the Krabi travel guide and Thailand tourism hub.

Ao Nang Beach at Night

Ao Nang is calmer after dark than Phuket or Phi Phi, which suits most travellers who base here. The action centres on the beach road and Center Point, a small entertainment complex with bars, live music and cabaret shows. The Blue Dragon and similar acts put on colourful dance shows, and there are plenty of low-key beachfront bars if you just want a cold drink and the sea breeze. For food, the night market a few steps inland beats any bar menu.

This guide is maintained by the TravelTriangle Editorial Team and checked against operator schedules and Krabi tourism sources. Transfer times, fares and boat schedules change with the season, so confirm current prices at the counter before you travel.

Naveen's 14 days trip to Krabi

Overall, we had a very good experience with our travel agent. The trip was planned well, all commitments were fulfilled as promised, and the coordination throughout the journey was smooth. The team was responsive, professional, and ensured that transfers, sightseeing, and bookings were arranged prop
erly, making the trip hassle-free. The only major disappointment was the hotel selected in Pattaya. The rooms were quite compact, we encountered cockroaches in the room, and the towels provided were not up to the expected standard. This part of the experience could have been much better. The itinerary was well designed overall; however, for some outdoor attractions, scheduling visits during the evening would have been preferable, especially during the summer season, to avoid the intense daytime heat and make sightseeing more comfortable. Despite these points, we appreciate the effort and support provided by the travel agent. The trip was enjoyable, and with a little more attention to hotel selection and timing of certain activities, the experience could have been excellent.

Vrushabh's 7 days trip to Krabi

We recently booked an 11-day, 10-night land package to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, covering Bangkok, Phuket, and Krabi. Traveling with a 2-year-old can be challenging, but the overall experience was smooth and well-coordinated. Our itinerary was packed with great activities. In Bangkok, Safa
ri World was a huge hit with our little one, and the temple tours were beautiful. The Krabi leg was fantastic—the 7 Island Tour and the Jungle Tour were standouts. In Phuket, the Phi Phi Island tour and the Old City tour were both well-managed and enjoyable. Since we only opted for the land package and airport transfers, we relied heavily on their punctuality. The transfers were seamless, which is a massive relief when you’re hauling luggage and a toddler! The only disappointment was the Elephant Sanctuary tour. It felt very rushed, lasting only about an hour and a half, which didn't quite meet our expectations compared to the quality of the other excursions. Overall, we had a wonderful family holiday. Travtree Holidays provided great service and reliable transport. Highly recommended for families looking for a well-organized Thailand experience!

We recently booked our family trip to Thailand with Travtree Holidays, and it turned out to be an absolutely wonderful experience from start to finish. The entire itinerary was very well organized, making the trip smooth and stress-free—especially important when traveling with young children (our ki
ds are 2 and 5 years old). All pick-ups were perfectly on time, and the vehicles provided were clean, comfortable, and spacious, which made commuting easy and relaxing for the whole family. The hotels arranged for us were excellent—family-friendly, comfortable, and conveniently located. Everything was thoughtfully planned, allowing us to enjoy each destination without any hassle. A special mention goes to our visits to Siam Ocean World (sea life) and Safari World & Marine Park. Both experiences were incredibly impressive and became the highlight of our trip. Siam Water World was fantastic for the kids, with exciting views of the sea creatures penguins etc that they thoroughly enjoyed. Safari World was equally amazing—the safari drive and shows were captivating, and seeing the animals up close was a memorable experience for both adults and children. Overall, Travtree Holidays ensured a seamless, enjoyable, and perfectly managed vacation for our family. We truly appreciate their professionalism and attention to detail and would highly recommend them to anyone planning a trip to Thailand—especially families traveling with young kids.

    Krabi Travel FAQs

What is the best time to visit Ao Nang Beach?

The best window is November to March, when the Andaman coast is dry, the sea is calm and every island boat runs on schedule. It is also the busiest and priciest stretch, so book ahead. April and May are hot but still good value, while June to October brings monsoon rain and rougher water, when some island trips are cancelled on windy days.

How do I get to Ao Nang Beach from Krabi Airport?

Krabi International Airport is about 26 km from Ao Nang, roughly a 40-minute drive. A shared minibus costs around 150 to 200 THB per person and takes 35 to 45 minutes, while a private taxi does the run in about 30 minutes. If you are starting in Krabi Town, the local white songthaew reaches Ao Nang in around 30 minutes for about 60 THB.

Is Ao Nang Beach worth visiting?

Yes, especially as a first Krabi base. The beach itself is pleasant rather than the region's best, but Ao Nang's value is location: longtail boats leave from the sand for Railay, Poda and the 4 Islands, and the town has the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and tour desks in the area. Most travellers use it as a hub and beach-hop by boat each day.

What are the best day trips from Ao Nang Beach?

The three most popular are the 4 Islands tour (Phra Nang, Chicken Island, Tup and Koh Poda), the Phi Phi and Maya Bay speedboat trip, and the Hong Islands loop for quieter lagoons. Inland, the Tiger Cave Temple and the Emerald Pool make an easy half-day. Ao Nang also connects to the James Bond Island tour in Phang Nga Bay.

How far is Railay Beach from Ao Nang?

Railay is a 15 to 20 minute longtail-boat ride from the Ao Nang beachfront; there is no road, so the boat is the only way in. Shared longtails run through the day and cost around 100 to 150 THB per person once enough passengers gather. It is close enough to visit for a few hours or a full day from Ao Nang.

Can you go island hopping from Ao Nang Beach?

Yes, Ao Nang is the main island-hopping base in Krabi. You can join a set tour like the 4 Islands or Hong Islands, or charter a private longtail from the beach to build your own route. Longtails are the cheaper, slower option and speedboats cover more ground, reaching Phi Phi and the outer islands in a single day.

What are the best things to do at Ao Nang Beach?

Beyond swimming and sunbathing, the highlights are island hopping, snorkelling and scuba diving, rock climbing at nearby Railay and Tonsai, kayaking to Tonsai and Chicken Island, and an evening at the Ao Nang Night Market. End the day with a west-facing sunset and a traditional Thai massage on the strip.

Is there food at Ao Nang Beach?

Plenty. The beach road and Walking Street are lined with restaurants serving Thai and international food, from cheap noodle stalls to sit-down seafood. The Ao Nang Night Market is the best-value dinner, with grilled seafood, pad thai and mango sticky rice, and there are cafes and bars along the promenade for a drink at sunset.

Is swimming safe at Ao Nang Beach?

Swimming is allowed and generally safe at Ao Nang, with a gently shelving beach that suits families. Take the usual care in monsoon season (June to October), when the sea can be rough and murky, and watch for occasional jellyfish; local signs and boat crews will flag any warnings. For calmer, clearer water, the nearby island beaches are the better swim.
