Shoghi straddles a gentle hill slope

Places to Visit in Shoghi, Himachal Pradesh

A picturesque hamlet in Shimla

Rated 4.20/5 ( based on 10840 reviews )

Shoghi is a small hill town about 13 km from Shimla on National Highway 5 (the old NH-22), sitting at roughly 5,873 ft (1,790 m) above sea level. Locals call it the town of temples, and it is best known for two things: its ridge-top shrines and the fruit-product cottages that press apple juice, jam, syrup and pickle along the highway. It is close enough to Shimla for a half-day run and quiet enough to stay a night or two. Most travellers do it in one to two days, pairing temple visits with a forest camp. Below are the real places to visit in Shoghi, the honest nearby day-trips, and everything you need on best time and how to reach.

Shoghi fast facts

Fact Detail
Elevation about 5,873 ft (1,790 m) above sea level
Distance from Shimla about 13 km by road on NH-5 (old NH-22), roughly 30 minutes
Nearest railhead Shoghi station, on the Kalka-Shimla heritage line (Kalka about 80 km)
Nearest airport Shimla (Jubbarhatti) about 21 km
Best months March to June and September to November
Ideal duration 1 to 2 days (easy weekend from Shimla or Chandigarh)

What is Shoghi famous for?

Shoghi is famous as a quiet, temple-dotted getaway on the Shimla ridge, about 13 km short of the town at around 5,873 ft. Three things define it. First, the shrines: it is genuinely known across Himachal as a town of temples, with Tara Devi on the hill above and Kali and Hanuman temples reached along the ridge. Second, its cottage fruit industry. The stretch of highway through Shoghi is lined with small units (Minchy among them) selling apple wine, fresh juices, jams and pickles that travellers carry back as gifts. Third, the Kalka-Shimla Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge line that has a stop at Shoghi. You can ride the toy train in, walk a forest trail out, and be back for a temple sunset the same afternoon.

Top Places to Visit in Shoghi

Shoghi sits on a gentle slope under oak and pine. The genuine Shoghi attractions are on and around its own ridge. A few well-known Shimla temples are also within easy reach and make good half-day trips, so we have marked those clearly as day-trips rather than pass them off as Shoghi sights.

Tara Devi Temple

This is Shoghi’s signature shrine. Dedicated to the goddess Tara, it stands on Tara Devi hill just above the town and is one of the oldest Tibetan-Buddhist-linked sites in the area. The wooden idol was installed by Raja Bhupendra Sen in the Vaishnavi style. You can drive most of the way up, then walk the last forested stretch, and the hilltop gives a clean view down the valley toward Shimla. There is a small station of the same name on the Kalka-Shimla line at the base.

Shoghi’s fruit-product cottages

The highway through Shoghi is the town’s other landmark. Family-run units press and bottle apple juice, cider, jam, honey, squash and the pickles the town is known for. It is worth a 20-minute stop to taste and buy, and it is the single most Shoghi thing you can do here. Buy sealed bottles for the drive home and confirm prices at the counter.

Kalka-Shimla Railway and Shoghi station

Shoghi has a stop on the 96-km Kalka-Shimla narrow-gauge line, a UNESCO World Heritage railway famous for its 100-plus tunnels and arched viaducts. Boarding a heritage train (the Himalayan Queen runs this route) into or out of Shoghi is a small experience in itself, and the walking trails beside the track make for an easy 1 to 2 hour amble.

Nearby day-trips (in Shimla, not Shoghi)

These are Shimla-side sights, roughly 13 km away, and they make a natural half-day from Shoghi. Jakhoo Hill and its Hanuman Temple sit at about 8,050 ft over Shimla, crowned by a tall Hanuman statue visible for miles. Shimla’s Kalibari (Kali Mata) temple is on the same ridge. Do not confuse these with Shoghi itself. The often-repeated line about a Kali temple at 8,500 ft belongs to the Jakhoo ridge in Shimla, not to Shoghi. Kandaghat, on the Solan road about 20 km away at roughly 4,700 ft, is a pleasant drive with the Chail View palace just outside town, and Chail with its wildlife sanctuary and famous cricket ground is a longer excursion from there.

Things to Do in Shoghi

Camping is the headline activity. Shoghi’s forest camps run overnight stays with a full adventure menu: zip-line, Burma-bridge and valley crossing, rappelling, rock climbing, flying fox, commando-net and rope walks, and trampolines for younger travellers. Beyond the camps, the town suits slow days. There are marked walking and cycling trails of 1 to 2 hours, half-day and full-day length that follow the World Heritage Kalka-Shimla railway tracks, plus bird-watching in the oak and deodar and short forest treks that families and couples both enjoy. Night treks are popular with the camp crowd. It is an unfussy, outdoorsy place rather than a sightseeing checklist, which is exactly why people come.

Best Time to Visit Shoghi

The short answer: March to June for green, mild weather, and December to February if you want a chance of snow. Shoghi is comfortable year-round because it sits high, but each season reads differently.

Season Months What to expect
Summer March to June Best overall. Pleasant 15-25 C days, clear valley views, ideal for camping, trails and temple visits.
Monsoon July to September Lush and quiet, but the hills get slippery and landslips can block roads. Fewer crowds, lower rates.
Autumn Sep to November Crisp, clear and photogenic. The second-best window for treks and the railway walk.
Winter Dec to February Cold, and Shoghi can get light snow. Atmospheric for a cosy stay, carry warm layers.

Peak trekking and adventure months are March to June and September to November, which line up with the driest, clearest weather.

How to Reach Shoghi

Shoghi sits right on NH-5 between Chandigarh and Shimla, so reaching it is simple. In short: it is about 13 km before Shimla, roughly 100 km from Chandigarh and about 330 km from Delhi, with the nearest airport at Shimla (Jubbarhatti) around 21 km away and its own stop on the Kalka-Shimla heritage line. For train timings, HRTC bus details and the full road route, see our how to reach Shoghi guide.

From Distance (approx) Mode
Shimla 13 km Taxi or HRTC bus, about 30 min
Chandigarh 100 km Road via NH-5, about 3 to 3.5 hrs
Delhi 330 km Road, or train to Kalka then toy train
Kalka (railhead) 80 km Kalka-Shimla toy train to Shoghi
Shimla airport (Jubbarhatti) 21 km Taxi

Where to Stay in Shoghi

Shoghi punches above its size on stays. Aamod at Shoghi is the best-known name, an eco-resort set into the forest that blends into the treeline and suits a quiet luxury weekend. Club Mahindra, Vatika, Park Woods Jungle Resort and Raikot Resort are the other established options, alongside the forest camps for anyone who wants the tents-and-bonfire version. Confirm current rates and that each property is still operating before you book.

Local Food in Shoghi

Shoghi eats simply and well. Roadside dhabas serve honest, affordable North Indian food: tandoori roti, dal makhani, dum aloo, palak paneer and stuffed parathas with raita, washed down with lassi or buttermilk. For a sit-down meal, the restaurants at Aamod, Machaan, The Colonial and More Please are the names travellers return to. Do not leave without a bottle of the local apple juice or a jar of pickle from the highway cottages.

    Shimla Travel FAQs

    What is Shoghi famous for?

Shoghi is famous as a temple town and a quiet forest getaway about 13 km from Shimla. Its landmarks are the Tara Devi temple on the ridge above town, the Kalka-Shimla heritage railway that stops here, and the fruit-product cottages along the highway that sell apple juice, jam and pickle. Overnight camping in its pine forests is the main draw for most visitors.

What is the height or elevation of Shoghi?

Shoghi sits at about 5,873 ft (1,790 m) above sea level, a little lower than Shimla itself. That altitude keeps its summers mild and gives it a real chance of light snow in December and January, which is why it works as a year-round base near Shimla.

How far is Shoghi from Shimla and how do you reach it?

Shoghi is about 13 km from Shimla by road on NH-5, roughly a 30-minute drive by taxi or HRTC bus. It is around 100 km from Chandigarh and 330 km from Delhi, with the nearest airport at Shimla (Jubbarhatti) about 21 km away and its own stop on the Kalka-Shimla toy-train line. See our how-to-reach guide for timings.

What are the best places to visit in Shoghi?

The genuine Shoghi sights are the Tara Devi temple on the hill above town, the fruit-product cottages on the highway, and the Kalka-Shimla railway station and forest walking trails. Jakhoo Hill and its Hanuman Temple, Shimla's Kalibari, and Kandaghat and Chail are all easy half-day trips nearby rather than Shoghi itself.

What adventure activities can you try in Shoghi?

Shoghi's forest camps offer zip-line, Burma-bridge and valley crossing, rappelling, rock climbing, flying fox and rope walks, plus night treks and trampolines. There are also marked walking and cycling trails of 1 to 2 hours up to full-day length along the railway tracks, and bird-watching in the oak and deodar. The best months for these are March to June and September to November.

What is the best time to visit Shoghi?

March to June is the best overall window: mild, clear and green, ideal for camping and temple visits. September to November is a close second. Visit December to February if you want a chance of snow and a cosy stay, and expect slippery roads and the odd landslip if you come during the July to September monsoon.

Is Shoghi worth visiting for a weekend from Shimla or Chandigarh?

Yes. Shoghi is an easy weekend, about 30 minutes from Shimla and 3 hours from Chandigarh, and it gives you forest camping, ridge temples and the heritage railway without Shimla's crowds. One night is enough for the temples and a camp, two if you want to add a Jakhoo or Chail day-trip. It pairs well with a wider Shimla trip.
