About Bahu Fort in Jammu
The history of Bahu Fort is as old as the history of the Jammu city. Bahu Fort, Jammu, is one of the most beautiful historical places situated on the banks of the Tawi river. The architectural style of the fort is influenced by Mughal architectural style. Sandstones and brinks are the backbones of this marvelous fort. The fort is also one of the most visited structures situated in Jammu district. It is situated at a distance of 4.1 km from the Jammu Tawi Railway and only 5 km away from the city center.
History of Bahu Fort
The history of Bahu Fort dates back to over 3000 years back when it was established by Raja Bahucholan. Later, renovations were made during the Dogra dynasty. The city is known to be named after the then king of the Dogra Dynasty, Raja Jambu Lochan. As per legends, Raja Jambu Lochan appeared at this place while hunting and got awe-struck by the beauty of the place. Years later, his brother Raja Bahucholan established the fort. The fort was rebuilt again in the year 1585. The present structure of the fort was built by Maharaja Gulab Singh.
Bahu Mela
Bahu Mela is one of the most vibrantly celebrated festivals in Jammu. Bahu Fort is the place where this festival is hosted. Best of all, it is celebrated twice in a year, i.e., during the months of March and April and September and October. Bahu Mela takes place during Navratri.
