Kolahoi Glacier Trek: Itinerary, Distance, Cost and Current Status

Status, checked 24 October 2026: Treks beyond Aru, including Kolahoi Glacier, are not open. In July 2026 the J&K Director of Tourism said all trekking routes in the valley would stay closed until further orders, and we have found no reopening notice since. Aru itself is open to day visitors. We check the Anantnag district notices again on 1 January 2027 and will update this box the same day.

Is the Kolahoi Glacier Trek Open? Status for 2026 and 2027

No, not in 2026. After the attack at Baisaran on 22 April 2025, the J&K administration suspended trekking across the Kashmir valley. The suspension has not been lifted for the West Lidder routes. In July 2026 the J&K Director of Tourism said all trekking routes would stay closed until further orders, as reported by The Wire. Indiahikes, the operator whose documentation most guides copy, has called off its 2026 Tarsar Marsar departures from the same trailhead.

Several things are open, and it helps to know the difference before you plan:

Kolahoi is not named on the Anantnag district's list of closed tourist destinations. That list names specific spots, including Baisaran and Tulian Lake, and Aru is not on it either. The trek is shut by the separate, valley-wide trekking suspension. Treat any operator selling fixed 2026 Kolahoi dates with care, and ask them which order they are relying on.

Outlook for 2027. If the suspension is lifted over the winter, the earliest realistic start is late June 2027, once snow clears above Lidderwat. Keep any advance payment small and confirm with the Wildlife Warden office in Pahalgam before you travel. In the meantime, a Pahalgam trip can still take in Aru, Betaab and the Lidder riverside.

Where Is Kolahoi Glacier?

Kolahoi Glacier lies in Anantnag district, in the Lidder valley of south Kashmir, at about 34.17° N, 75.34° E. It sits inside the Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary, at the top of the West Lidder, the branch of the Lidder that flows south past Aru to meet the East Lidder at Pahalgam. From Pahalgam town it is 12 km by road to Aru and then about 21 km on foot. Srinagar is about 102 km by road to the trailhead.

Locally the peak and its glacier go by the name Gwash Brari, which trek guides translate as "Goddess of Light". Wikipedia records an older form, Gashe-braed. Either way, the glacier matters far beyond the trek. Its meltwater is the main source of the Lidder, which irrigates the orchards and paddy of Anantnag district before joining the Jhelum near Khanabal.

Kolahoi Glacier Altitude, Size and Retreat

Three different heights get quoted for "Kolahoi", and they describe three different things. Kolahoi Peak is 5,425 m (17,799 ft), with 1,570 m of prominence. The glacier on its north face averages about 4,700 m. Trekkers never reach that ice. The viewpoint where most groups stop is around 3,400 m, and the highest camp on the Dudhsar loop is about 3,840 m (12,600 ft).

The glacier is shrinking fast. Studies cited on Wikipedia measured its area at 13.57 sq km in 1963 and 10.69 sq km in 2005, a loss of 2.88 sq km in 42 years. It was about 5 km long in 1974, and in the Pleistocene it reached at least 35 km down the valley. This is why every recent guide tells you to view it from the moraine rather than walk onto it. The snout you see today is broken, debris-covered and unstable.

Kolahoi Glacier Trek Itinerary, Day by Day

This is the standard 5-day plan from Srinagar. It is the Satlanjan base-camp route most operators run. Heights follow the Indiahikes trek notes, but Indiahikes itself documents the Dudhsar loop described below, and operators vary distances by a few kilometres.

Day 1, Srinagar to Aru. The drive runs through Anantnag and up the Lidder past Pahalgam. Pahalgam's union taxis take you the last 12 km, because outside cabs cannot run the Aru road. Arrive early, walk around the meadow and let your body adjust to 2,400 m before the climb starts.

Day 2, Aru to Lidderwat. The trail climbs gently through fir and pine on the left bank of the West Lidder, then crosses side streams and open grass. You pass Gujjar and Bakarwal summer huts on the way, and shepherds sometimes sell milk and kahwa. Lidderwat is a broad meadow where the river splits. The western branch leads to Tarsar Lake, the northern one to Kolahoi.

Day 3, Lidderwat to Satlanjan. The valley narrows and the walk gets rockier. Expect boulder fields, a few log or stone crossings and your first clear view of the Kolahoi pyramid. Satlanjan is the last shepherd settlement and the usual base camp, a grassy shelf below the moraine.

Day 4, the glacier viewpoint. Leave early. The path climbs moraine on the right side of the valley to a viewpoint facing the snout and the north face of the peak. Because the glacier has retreated, you see it across the moraine rather than from its edge, and that is where you should stop. The return to Satlanjan is on the same path.

Day 5, back to Aru. A long but mostly downhill day of 14 to 17 km along the river (Indiahikes logs 14 km; adding up the outbound stages gives about 17), back past Lidderwat to Aru by mid-afternoon, then the drive to Srinagar.

The Dudhsar variant (5 days, 6 with a buffer). Indiahikes documents a loop that goes from Lidderwat up to Dudhsar Lake (about 8 km, high camp at roughly 12,600 ft) on Day 3, crosses to the viewpoint and down to Satlanjan on Day 4 (7 km), and returns to Aru on Day 5 (14 km). It adds a high glacial lake and the best views, at the cost of a much steeper Day 3. Add a buffer day in Srinagar or Aru for weather.

The 1-day Lidderwat hike. If you are short of time or fitness, the walk from Aru to Lidderwat and back is the best part of the valley in one day. It is about 20 km and 8 hours round trip, so it only fits inside Aru's exit time if you sleep in Aru and start by 7 AM. Like the full trek, it needs the trekking suspension to lift first.

How Long Is the Kolahoi Trek? Why Sources Say 26, 40 or 55 km

You will find the trek described as 26 km, 30 km, 39 km and 55 km, and its high point as anything from 3,800 m to 4,700 m. Nobody is lying. They are measuring different things.

Our working figures are these. Aru to the glacier viewpoint is about 21 km one way, so a straight out-and-back is close to 42 km, and the Dudhsar loop about 39 km. Trekkers top out at roughly 3,400 m at the standard viewpoint or 3,840 m at Dudhsar. Higher figures describe the upper moraine or the glacier itself, which trekkers should not be on.

How to Reach Aru, the Kolahoi Base Camp

By air. Srinagar airport (SXR) is the nearest. From there it is about 90 km to Pahalgam, 2.5 to 3 hours by cab, and then 12 km to Aru. Indiahikes quotes around Rs 3,000 for a 5 to 6 seater from Srinagar to the trailhead.

By train. The Kashmir rail line has run through to Srinagar since June 2025, and a direct Vande Bharat has linked Jammu Tawi and Srinagar since May 2026. For Pahalgam, get off at Anantnag, 46 km away. Shared cabs run Anantnag to Pahalgam for about Rs 110 a seat. Older guides that send you to Jammu by rail and then 285 km by road are out of date.

From Pahalgam to Aru. The 12 km road up the West Lidder takes 30 to 45 minutes. Only Pahalgam union taxis run it, at fixed rates from the stand near the main market. During the Amarnath Yatra in July and August, the Srinagar to Pahalgam road carries convoys and security checks. Leave Srinagar early.

How Difficult Is the Kolahoi Glacier Trek?

Call it moderate. The first two days are gentle forest and meadow walking that most active people manage without trouble. The hard part starts above Lidderwat, where the trail turns into loose boulder fields and then a rough, mostly pathless climb over moraine on the viewpoint day. On the way you will cross a number of mountain streams, and by afternoon some run knee-deep.

You need no technical skill, but you do need legs. A fair test is running 5 km in under 35 minutes, or walking 10 km with a 6 kg pack without stopping much, four to six weeks before you go. Operators take trekkers from 12 to 62. What matters is fitness, not age. Skip it if you have heart or lung conditions, if you are pregnant, or if you have never walked more than a few hours at a stretch. A first-time trekker who trains properly can do this route. Day 5's 14 to 17 km descent is what catches people out, not the climb.

Best Time for the Kolahoi Glacier Trek

Kolahoi is a summer trek. Kashmir gets only light rain in July and August because the Pir Panjal blocks most of the monsoon cloud, which is why those months, not May, are the season.

July and August days are warm enough to walk in a shirt, but nights at Satlanjan drop close to freezing. Plan for a sub-zero night at Dudhsar even in summer.

Kolahoi Trek Cost, Permits and Guides

There is no entry fee for the glacier. You pay for a guide, ponies, camping and transfers, either yourself or through an operator. The figures below are from operators and DIY guides for the 2026 season, before the suspension.

A small group going DIY spends about Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000 each for 4 trekking days. A package (Cliffhangers lists Rs 12,000 to Rs 14,000, Himalaya Shelter about Rs 25,000) adds a trek leader, cooked veg meals and safety kit. Most travellers add one or two hotel nights in Pahalgam before and after. You can browse hotels in Pahalgam or Pahalgam tour packages for that part of the trip.

Permits and documents. Permission comes from the Wildlife Warden office in Pahalgam, because the route runs through the Overa-Aru sanctuary, and your guide normally arranges it. Carry original photo ID (Aadhaar, passport or driving licence) plus copies, and a medical fitness certificate if your operator asks for one. Foreign nationals also register with the police at Pahalgam. Trek only with a registered local guide or operator. Do not attempt this route solo.

What to Pack for the Kolahoi Trek

Staying Safe on a Glacier Trek

Altitude. The real risk on this trek is Acute Mountain Sickness, not motion sickness. You climb from about 2,400 m to 3,400 m or more in three days. Headache, nausea, poor sleep and breathlessness at rest are the early signs. Walk slowly, drink 3 to 4 litres a day, and go down if symptoms get worse overnight. Take acetazolamide (Diamox) only on medical advice.

The glacier itself. It is not advised to go on the top of Kolahoi Glacier. See it from a distance, from the moraine viewpoint, and be careful near it. The ice hides crevasses, the snout drops blocks as it melts, and the slopes above shed rock. On 7 September 2018, rockfall killed two climbers descending from Kolahoi Peak.

Water and weather. Cross streams in the morning, facing upstream, with your pack hip belt unclipped. Afternoon storms can turn the boulder sections slippery, so be off the moraine by early afternoon.

No signal. Mobile coverage ends at Aru. Tell someone your plan, and expect your guide to be your only line out.

The closure. Respect it. The suspension covers every route beyond Aru, and no guide or shepherd can give you permission the administration has not.

Leave no trace in the meadows. Carry out every wrapper, keep soap out of streams, and ask before photographing Gujjar and Bakarwal families.

Kolahoi vs Tarsar Marsar vs Tulian vs Kashmir Great Lakes

Kolahoi and Tarsar Marsar share their first day as far as Lidderwat. If you have only five days and want ice rather than lakes, pick Kolahoi.

Kolahoi Peak (Mount Kolahoi)

Kolahoi Peak rises to 5,425 m (17,799 ft) and is the highest mountain in the Kashmir Division. A British medical party led by Dr Ernest Neve made the first ascent in 1912. The easiest climbing route is the south face, reached from Aru, but that is a mountaineering expedition with ropes, not a trek. Trekkers see the peak best from Satlanjan at dawn and from the Day 4 viewpoint.

Photography on the Kolahoi Trek

The best frames on this route come early. Lidderwat's meadow and river are lit softly between 6 and 8 AM. From Satlanjan, the Kolahoi pyramid catches first light around sunrise in July and August. On the Dudhsar variant, the lake gives a reflection of the ridge on still mornings. Carry a spare battery inside your jacket at night, because cold drains it fast.
