Betaab Valley, Pahalgam: Height, Distance, How to Reach and Best Time

The valley was known as Hagan (Hajan) Valley until 1983, when the film Betaab was shot here and the new name stuck. It is about 11 km long, but visitors see only the fenced meadow at its lower end, where pine and deodar slopes drop to the grass and the Lidder runs straight through the middle. Unlike Aru, it is a ticketed park with a gate, lawns and a footbridge, which makes it the easiest valley near Pahalgam for families with small children. Is Betaab Valley Open in 2026?

Yes. Betaab Valley is open to tourists. The administration closed it, along with most sightseeing spots around Pahalgam, as a precaution after the attack at Baisaran on 22 April 2025. Betaab was among the first to reopen, on 17 June 2025, and it has stayed open since. Expect a police checkpoint on the road and a bag check at the gate. Some 2026 reports say visitors are asked to leave the valleys by mid-afternoon, so ask at the gate when you arrive and plan to be back at your taxi by about 3:30 PM to be safe.

Betaab does not appear on the Anantnag district list of closed tourist destinations, updated on 7 July 2026 and valid until 31 December 2026. Several of its neighbours do, and that changes how you plan your day.

The road to Betaab continues to Chandanwari, so in 2026 your taxi turns around at Betaab. Notices here change with little warning. Ask your hotel or the taxi stand the evening before you go.

Where Is Betaab Valley? Height, Distance and the "15 km" Mix-Up

Betaab Valley sits on the eastern branch of the Lidder, the one that flows down from Sheshnag Lake. From Pahalgam the road forks. The eastern fork climbs past Betaab to Chandanwari, the start of the Amarnath Yatra trail. The western fork follows the West Lidder to Aru. The valley forms part of the pilgrim route, so in July and August the same road carries the Yatra convoys.

Many guidebooks, and the old version of this page, say Betaab is 15 km from Pahalgam. It is not. The valley floor lies about 6 km from Pahalgam town in a straight line and 7 to 8 km by road. The 15 km figure belongs closer to Chandanwari, which is 16 km out. Allow 20 to 30 minutes each way, a little more when Yatra traffic is on the road.

The altitude causes the same confusion. You will see 2,400 m, 2,530 m and even 2,895 m quoted online. The valley floor is at 2,393 m (7,851 ft), and 2,895 m is Chandanwari's height. At 2,393 m most visitors feel fine, but walk slowly for the first few minutes if you have flown in from the plains that morning.

How to Reach Betaab Valley

You reach Betaab Valley in two legs. First you travel to Pahalgam, and then you switch to a local union taxi for the last 7 to 8 km.

From Srinagar (about 100 km, 3 to 3.5 hours). Drive south on NH44 to Anantnag, then take the Pahalgam road up the Lidder valley through Aishmuqam. Srinagar airport is the nearest airport, and most visitors hire a cab or join a shared taxi from there. Our Srinagar to Pahalgam guide covers cab fares and bus timings.

From Jammu (about 250 km, 7 to 8 hours). Take NH44 through the Banihal tunnel to Anantnag and turn off for Pahalgam. See Jammu to Pahalgam for the road and rail options, and Delhi to Pahalgam if you are coming from further away.

By train. Trains on the Kashmir valley line stop at Anantnag, about 45 km from Pahalgam. Taxis and shared cabs wait outside the station.

From Pahalgam to Betaab. Go to the union taxi stand in Pahalgam town, pick a vehicle and agree the return fare and waiting time before you get in. The drive follows the Lidder upstream, crosses it and climbs gently to the gate.

Can You Go to Betaab Valley by Car?

No. A High Court-backed rule reserves sightseeing trips from Pahalgam to Betaab, Aru and Chandanwari for vehicles registered at the Pahalgam taxi stands. Srinagar cabs and rental cars drop you at your hotel in town and wait there, and 2026 guides say the same applies to private cars. Plan on a union taxi, and ask at the stand if you are driving your own vehicle, because enforcement has varied over the years.

Betaab Valley Entry Fee, Timings and Taxi Fares

Entry to Betaab Valley costs Rs 100 per adult and Rs 50 for children aged 6 to 12. Children under 6 go in free, and foreign visitors pay the same Rs 100. The counter takes cash only. Paid toilets near the entrance cost Rs 10.

Best Time to Visit Betaab Valley

The best time to visit Betaab Valley is April to June, when the meadow is green, the Lidder runs full with snowmelt and the days are warm. September and October come a close second, with gold and rust on the slopes and far fewer people. The old advice that October to April is the ideal window is wrong. Things to Do in Betaab Valley

Nothing here needs booking. Almost everything happens on foot within a few hundred metres of the gate, and the only costs are ponies, photos and tea.

Walk the meadow and cross the Lidder

The valley floor is flat and open, with paths that loop around the grass and down to the river. A wooden bridge crosses the Lidder in the middle of the park, and the far bank is where the crowd thins out. Look for pine, walnut, willow and deodar along the edges. The water is snowmelt and very cold, so keep small children back from the edge.

Take a pony ride

Pony owners wait near the entrance and offer short rides around the meadow and up the side trails. Rates are set per route by the local pony association. Ask to see the printed card and agree the price and the route before you mount.

Try rope cycling

A rope-cycling line over the valley has been reported running in season since 2026. It is not always open, and the operator sets the price on the day, so treat it as a bonus if you find it working.

Photograph the valley

The classic shot is from the bridge, looking upstream with the river in the foreground and the snow peaks behind. The slope just inside the gate gives a wide view over the whole meadow. Light is softest before 10 AM and after 4 PM. Kashmiri-dress photographers work near the entrance and charge per session, so ask the rate first.

Picnic on the lawns

Families spread out on the grass with packed lunches, and a few stalls sell tea, snacks and Maggi near the gate. Carry your rubbish out with you.

Play in the snow

From December to February the meadow turns white. Snow boots and sledges can be hired in Pahalgam town before you set off. Check the road the evening before, because heavy snowfall can close it.

Use it as a trek base

The valley serves as a base campsite for trekkers heading higher, and the Lidder corridor leads on towards Chandanwari and Sheshnag Lake. Camping needs permission from the local authorities. With Chandanwari closed until the end of 2026, treks beyond Betaab are not running for casual visitors. Bird watchers will also find plenty to look at along the river in spring.

The Betaab Story: From Hagan Valley to Bollywood

The valley was called Hagan, or Hajan, until 1983. That year Rahul Rawail shot Betaab here, the film that launched both Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh. It became a hit, and the location took the film's name for good. The region came under Mughal rule when Akbar annexed Kashmir in 1586, but for most of its history Betaab was simply a grazing meadow on the way to Chandanwari.

Bollywood came to Pahalgam long before Betaab. Parts of Aarzoo (1965) and Kabhi Kabhie (1976) were shot around the town and its valleys. One myth to clear up: Bobby (1973) was not filmed here. The "Bobby hut" people ask about is in Gulmarg.

Betaab Valley vs Aru Valley: Which Should You Pick?

Both valleys are open, both need a union taxi from Pahalgam, and they suit different travellers. Some call Aru the mirror image of Betaab, but on the ground they feel nothing alike.

A One-Day Plan: Betaab and Aru from Pahalgam

Because Chandanwari is currently closed, the old three-valley circuit runs as a two-valley day. This is the order our Kashmir desk suggests now. On Yatra days in July and August, swap it round and do Betaab first, before the 12:30 PM closure.

1. Be at the Pahalgam taxi stand by 8:30 AM and book an Aru and Betaab return. Confirm the price and the waiting time before you set off.

2. Reach Aru by about 9:15 AM, while the meadow is still quiet, and take a short pony ride or walk upstream.

3. Leave Aru by 12:30 PM after tea or an early lunch at a village dhaba.

4. Drive back through Pahalgam and up the other fork, reaching Betaab Valley by about 1:30 PM.

5. Spend an hour on the meadow and at the bridge, then head down to Pahalgam by 3:30 PM.

6. In the evening, walk the Lidder riverside in town or visit Mamleshwar Temple, about 1 km from the market.

Where to Stay Near Betaab Valley

There are no hotels or guesthouses inside Betaab Valley. Stay in Pahalgam town, 7 to 8 km away. Hotels on the Chandanwari road side of town and along the Lidder put you the shortest drive from the gate, and the market area keeps you close to the taxi stand. Know Before You Go: 7 Mistakes to Avoid

1. Arriving without cash. The ticket counter, ponies and stalls all want cash, and there is no ATM at the gate.

2. Trusting the 15 km figure. It is 7 to 8 km. Do not let anyone price the taxi as a long trip.

3. Planning to drive your Srinagar cab in. It stops in Pahalgam. Budget for a union taxi.

4. Skipping the status check. Ask your hotel or the taxi stand the evening before, and carry photo ID for the checkpoints.

5. Coming at midday in June. That is when the coaches arrive. Go before 10 AM or after 2 PM, ideally on a weekday.

6. Underdressing. Even in June the shade is cool at 2,393 m. Carry a layer, and proper warm wear from November to March.

7. Leaving plastic behind. Pack out what you bring in. The valley's clean grass is the reason you came.

Mobile signal is patchy in the valley, and prepaid SIMs from outside Jammu and Kashmir do not work here, so download an offline map before you leave Pahalgam.

Places to Visit Near Betaab Valley

• Aru Valley sits on the other fork, about 19 to 20 km by road through Pahalgam, and is open for day visits. It has no gate fee, a working village and the trailheads for Lidderwat and Kolahoi, so most people pair it with Betaab in one day.

• Chandanwari lies on the same road, 16 km from Pahalgam, and is the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra. It is currently closed.

• Mamleshwar Temple is about 8 km away, near the market in Pahalgam. This small stone temple is one of the oldest in the area and is devoted to Lord Shiva.

• Pahalgam Golf Course is in Pahalgam town, about 7 to 8 km back down the road. It is laid out on a meadow beside the Lidder, and visitors can book a round or walk the edge for the view.

• Sheshnag Lake, at an elevation of 3,590 m, is the first night's halt on the Amarnath trail. You reach it on foot from Chandanwari on the Yatra trail, so it is out of reach until Chandanwari reopens.

• Tulian Lake is a high glacial lake reached by trek from Pahalgam. It is also currently closed.
