Kashmir Trek Permit Status 2027

High-altitude treks in Kashmir need a forest permit every season, and the rules changed after the April 2025 attack near Pahalgam. Camping on several routes was suspended, and most trek operators did not run Kashmir Great Lakes or Tarsar Marsar departures in 2026. The 2027 permit list is usually published in late spring, and we update this table as soon as it is out. Route news is tracked in our Jammu and Kashmir trekking route updates.

The Most Famous Places for Trekking in Kashmir

Kashmir's trekking country sits in three valleys, all within three hours of Srinagar. The Sindh Valley around Sonamarg holds the Great Lakes route. The Lidder Valley above Pahalgam and Aru is where Tarsar Marsar, Kolahoi and Tulian Lake begin. Gangabal and the Harmukh massif rise above Naranag in Ganderbal district. Unlike Ladakh, these trails stay green, through birch and pine and over meadows where Bakarwal shepherds graze their flocks all summer.

Kashmir Great Lakes Trek Package

You start at Shitkadi near Sonamarg, cross the Nichnai, Gadsar and Zajibal passes, and camp beside Vishansar, Krishnasar, Satsar and the twin Gangabal lakes before the long descent through pine to Naranag. Tarsar Marsar Trek Package

Tarsar Marsar starts at Aru, 12 km above Pahalgam, and follows the Lidder river to Lidderwat on day one. The loop climbs to Tarsar, an almond-shaped lake under a wall of scree, crosses to Sundersar for the view down onto Marsar, and returns via Homwas. It covers about 47 km in six to seven days with only one real pass, which is why first-time high-altitude trekkers usually start here.

Gangabal Trek from Naranag

With four days, this is the most lake for your time. The trail leaves the 8th-century temple ruins at Naranag, climbs hard through pine to the Trunkhol meadow, then eases to Gangabal and Nundkol at the foot of Harmukh's glaciers. You get the last two lakes of the Great Lakes trek without the three passes.

Kolahoi Glacier and Tulian Lake Treks

The Kolahoi route goes from Aru to Lidderwat, up the valley to Satlanjan, and on day three to the snout of the Kolahoi Glacier under the 17,800 ft Kolahoi peak. Tulian is the short lake trek from Pahalgam: ride or walk to Baisaran, then climb to a lake at about 12,000 ft that holds ice well into June. It is a one-night camp, so it fits into a family trip to Pahalgam.

Amarnath Yatra and Offbeat Kashmir Treks

The Amarnath Yatra is a pilgrimage trek to the cave shrine at about 12,750 ft. The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) fixes the dates each year, usually from early July into August, and every yatri must register in advance with a compulsory health certificate. For trekkers who have done the lake circuits, our partner agents run private treks to Warwan Valley, Kounsarnag, Nafran Valley and Tosa Maidan, with permits issued case by case.

Short Kashmir Treks and Day Hikes (No Camping)

These walks fit inside a regular Kashmir trip with hotel nights, and they stay bookable when the high-altitude routes are on hold.

• Gulmarg to Alpather Lake. Ride the Gulmarg Gondola to Phase 2 at Apharwat and hike roughly two hours to Alpather, a glacial lake above 12,500 ft that stays partly frozen till July. Start before 8 am.

• Thajiwas Glacier, Sonamarg. A 3 to 4 km walk or pony ride from the Sonamarg taxi stand to the glacier, easy enough for children. Read the Thajiwas Glacier guide.

• Aru to Lidderwat. The first day of Tarsar Marsar and Kolahoi, done as a 20 km return walk along the Lidder river.

• Doodhpathri meadows. Gentle meadow walks about 42 km from Srinagar, best in June and July.

Best Time for Trekking in Kashmir

Book your Kashmir trek for early July to mid-September, when the passes on the Great Lakes and Tarsar Marsar routes are clear of snow and the meadows are in flower. June and early October work for the lower day hikes. From December to March the high routes are closed and the only walking is on snowshoes in Gulmarg.

How to Reach Kashmir Trek Base Camps

Every Kashmir trek begins in Srinagar. Srinagar airport (SXR) has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and other cities, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Delhi. Since June 2025 the Vande Bharat Express runs from Katra to Srinagar in about three hours; see our Delhi to Kashmir trains guide. From Srinagar, Sonamarg is about 80 km, Aru about 110 km via Pahalgam, and Naranag and Gulmarg about 50 km each. The shared trailhead transfer is part of your trek fare.

What to Pack for a Kashmir Trek

• Broken-in trekking shoes with ankle support, plus sandals for river crossings

• A fleece, a padded jacket and a waterproof shell, plus thermals for the nights

• A 40 to 50 litre backpack with rain cover and a 20 litre daypack if you offload

• Sun hat, UV sunglasses, SPF 50 sunscreen and lip balm

• Two 1-litre bottles, a headlamp and trekking poles

• Original photo ID plus two photocopies for the forest and police check-posts, and a doctor-signed medical fitness certificate, which registered operators ask for before high-altitude treks

• A postpaid SIM for Srinagar, since prepaid SIMs from other states do not work in Jammu and Kashmir
