Aru Valley, Pahalgam: Open Status, How to Reach, Best Time and Treks

Aru is where the tarmac runs out. Above the last guesthouses the West Lidder valley opens into wide grass, pine slopes and the trail to Lidderwat, Kolahoi Glacier and the Tarsar Marsar lakes. About Aru Valley in Pahalgam

Aru is not a hill station. It is a small village of log-and-stone houses and a few guesthouses on the left bank of the Aru stream, just above where it meets the West Lidder. Around it lie open meadows, conifer slopes of pine and fir, and the snow peaks of the Kolahoi massif to the north. Kolahoi itself, at 5,425 m, is the highest peak in the Kashmir Valley.

Travellers come for two different reasons. Day visitors want the meadow, the river and a pony ride into the side valleys without the crowds of the Pahalgam bowl. Trekkers come because Aru is the starting point for the Lidderwat, Kolahoi Glacier, Tarsar Lake and Katrinag treks. Both groups share the same short road and the same taxi stand.

In summer the slopes above the village fill with Gujjar and Bakarwal families. They drive their flocks up from the plains in May and live in low mud-and-timber huts called kothas until September. Walk ten minutes above the road and you will usually find their sheep, dogs and smoke from a cooking fire. Ask before you photograph anyone.

Is Aru Valley Open Right Now?

Yes. Aru Valley is open to tourists. The Jammu and Kashmir administration shut it in April 2025 as a precaution after the attack at Baisaran, and reopened it on 29 September 2025 along with Rafting Point Yanner and Akkad Park, as the Tribune reported. In April 2026 Republic World reported that visitors must leave Aru before 4 PM. Plan your day so you are back at the taxi by about 3:30 PM.

Aru does not appear on the Anantnag district list of closed tourist destinations dated 7 July 2026, which runs until 31 December 2026. Several nearby spots do. That changes how you plan a Pahalgam day.

The old three-valley taxi circuit (Aru, Betaab and Chandanwari) therefore runs as a two-valley trip for now, even though some printed rate cards still list all three. Security notices here change at short notice. Ask your hotel or the taxi stand the evening before you go.

Where Is Aru Valley?

Aru sits at the head of the West Lidder valley, north-west of Pahalgam town. From Pahalgam the road forks. One branch climbs east along the Sheshnag stream to Betaab Valley and Chandanwari. The other follows the West Lidder north to Aru. The two valleys are on different forks, so going from one to the other always means driving back through Pahalgam.

The village is also the gateway to the Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary, so the forest behind the meadows is protected land.

How to Reach Aru Valley

You cannot take a Srinagar cab or any outside taxi to Aru. Hired vehicles stop in Pahalgam, and the last 12 km are run by the Pahalgam taxi union. Get to Pahalgam first, then switch.

From Pahalgam

Union taxis (mostly Eeco, Sumo and Innova) wait at the stand near the main market and charge a fixed return fare per vehicle, with about an hour of waiting time at Aru. A return trip to Aru costs roughly Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,800 per vehicle depending on its size. The road is paved but narrow, with a few rough stretches in the last kilometres.

If you have time, walk one way. The trail follows the West Lidder through pine forest and past Gujjar huts, and you can get a taxi back.

From Srinagar, Jammu and Delhi

Best Time to Visit Aru Valley

Go in May or June for green meadows and snow still on the peaks, in July to September for treks, and in January or February if you want deep snow. Each season changes what you can do here.

Winter is a real draw. With 1 to 3 feet of snow on the ground, Aru gives you snow play away from Gulmarg's queues. Heavy snow can close the road for a day or two after a storm, so keep a buffer day. For the whole town, see the best time to visit Pahalgam.

Things to Do in Aru Valley

Pony rides to the side meadows

This is the classic Aru afternoon. Ponies wait at the edge of the village and go up to the higher meadows and viewpoints over the West Lidder in one to three hours. Rates are fixed per route by the local pony association. Agree the route, the time and the price before you mount, and ask whether the handler walks with you.

Walk the Aru river and the meadow

The flat grass along the river is the easiest walk in the valley and fine for children and older travellers. Follow the water upstream for 30 to 40 minutes and the noise of the road disappears.

Trout fishing

The Lidder and its tributaries hold brown trout. You need an angling licence from the J&K Department of Fisheries for a specific beat, and the season runs through the warmer months. Carry your own gear or book through a licensed operator in Pahalgam.

Camping

Summer camping in the meadows above Aru is popular with trekking groups, and the first night of most Kolahoi and Tarsar treks is spent here or at Lidderwat. Inside the sanctuary, camp with a registered operator rather than pitching a tent on your own.

Snow play in winter

From December to February the meadow turns into a snowfield. Sledges and basic cross-country skiing are on offer from locals. For lift-served skiing and heli-skiing, go to Gulmarg. Aru does not have lifts.

Short hikes

Green Top, a grassy ridge above the village, is a common half-day climb with views back over the valley. Go with a local guide because the trail is not marked.

Treks That Start from Aru

Aru is the base camp for the West Lidder treks. The first stage to Lidderwat works as a long day hike. Everything beyond it is a multi-day trek that needs a registered operator, forest permits and a medical certificate.

Lidderwat is the one most visitors can manage. The trail climbs gently through forest and meadow to a broad grassland where the West Lidder splits, about four hours each way at a steady pace. That makes it an eight-hour round trip, which only fits inside the exit time if you sleep in Aru and are on the trail by 7 AM. Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary

The forest and high ground around Aru make up the Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary, 511 km² of protected land between roughly 2,100 m and 5,425 m. It was a game reserve under Dogra rule from 1945 and became a sanctuary in 1981. It shelters the critically endangered hangul (Kashmir stag), Asiatic black bear, Himalayan brown bear, Kashmir musk deer, ibex and golden marmot. You are unlikely to see the large mammals on a day visit. Monal pheasants and marmots on the higher trails are more realistic.

Where to Stay: Aru or Pahalgam?

Most people sleep in Pahalgam and treat Aru as a half-day trip. It has the wider choice of hotels, ATMs and restaurants, and it is only 40 minutes away.

Staying in Aru village makes sense for trekkers who want an early start and for anyone after silence and stars. The options are simple guesthouses, homestays and a few small hotels with basic heating, plus seasonal camps in summer. Many close between December and March. Food at Aru Valley

Food in Aru is simple. Dhabas and guesthouse kitchens serve rajma-chawal, Maggi, omelettes and kahwa, and a few cook Kashmiri dishes like rogan josh and dum aloo on order. For a full wazwan meal, eat in Pahalgam.

Aru Valley vs Betaab Valley

Both are open and both take a union taxi from Pahalgam, but they feel very different.

A One-Day Plan: Aru and Betaab from Pahalgam

Because Chandanwari is closed until 31 December 2026, this is the day our Kashmir desk suggests now. It fits inside the 4 PM exit time.

1. Be at the Pahalgam taxi stand by 8:30 AM and book a two-valley return trip. Confirm the price and the waiting time in writing.

2. Reach Aru by about 9:15 AM, while the meadow is still quiet.

3. Take a one to two hour pony ride to the upper meadows, or walk upstream along the river.

4. Have tea or an early lunch at a village dhaba by 12 noon, and leave Aru by 12:30 PM.

5. Drive back through Pahalgam and up the other fork to Betaab Valley, arriving about 1:30 PM.

6. Spend an hour on the valley floor and by the river, then head back to Pahalgam by 3:30 PM.

7. In the evening, walk the Lidder riverside in town or visit Mamleshwar Temple, about 1 km from the market.

Tips Before You Go

• Carry cash for the taxi, the pony and food. Do not count on a working ATM above Pahalgam.

• Prepaid SIMs from outside J&K do not work in the state. Postpaid connections from any state do work on roaming, and BSNL gets the best signal in Aru.

• Carry your photo ID. There are security checks on the Pahalgam roads.

• Pack a warm layer even in June. The wind off the snow drops the temperature fast after 2 PM.

• Wear shoes with grip. The meadow is wet and slippery in spring and after rain.

• Watch the clock and keep to the exit time. Taxis will not wait past it.

• Carry your rubbish back to Pahalgam. There are almost no bins on the meadow.

Nearby Places to Visit

• Betaab Valley is the landscaped valley on the Chandanwari fork, and it is open now.

• The Lidder River runs right through Pahalgam town. You can raft the Lidder from Yanner, which reopened with Aru in September 2025.

• Chandanwari, the Amarnath Yatra start point, stays closed to visitors until 31 December 2026.

• Sheshnag Lake lies on the Amarnath Yatra route and is reached only on the yatra in season.

Mamleshwar Temple is a small stone Shiva temple about 1 km from Pahalgam market.
